My Mate Humiliated Me Until the Lycan King Claimed Me Chapter 1

The bond broke at 4:12 on a Sunday afternoon, in front of two hundred and eleven pack members, and I felt it before I heard the words.

Bryce stepped onto the ceremonial stone with his face already wet. That was the detail I noticed first — the tears were there before the vow. My husband of three years, Alpha of the Silverfang Pack, had rehearsed his crying.

"I, Bryce Reynolds, Alpha of the Silverfang Pack, reject you, Aurora, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold.

Not painful yet. Cold, the way a hand goes cold when you've held it too long against a window. Then hollow. Like a door closing in an empty room. Then the blade — a real blade, drawn from the mark down through my sternum, opening me from the inside.

My knees hit the stone. I didn't choose it. I was standing and then I was not.

"Our bond is poisoning my wolf," Bryce said, voice cracking on cue. "I cannot watch him die for a mistake the Moon Goddess herself would want corrected."

Somewhere in the front row, his mother made a small, practiced sound of grief.

I pressed two fingers to the mark. My old habit. Three years of touching it for reassurance, feeling the warm pulse under the scar tissue, the small confirmation that I belonged to something.

Nothing.

No warmth. No pulse. A dead thing under my fingertips.

I stayed on my knees. Not because I wanted them to see. Because my legs had stopped being mine. Two hundred and eleven wolves watched me break, and not one of them stepped forward.

Deep beneath my ribs, something stirred — a low, slow pressure, like a fist testing the inside of a locked door. It was gone before I could name it.

***

They moved me to a spare room on the east wing. Not our room. Not anymore.

I lay on the floor because the bed was too far. The pain came in tides — cold, hollow, cold, hollow — and I curled around it and waited for it to decide whether to kill me.

And then, through the bond channel that had not yet fully sealed, Bryce's voice bled into my skull.

"—swear to god, the old wolves were crying. Crying. I could have asked them to eat their own boots at that point."

A second voice. His Beta. Warm, laughing. "You sold it, man."

"Isadora messaged. Said the moment the Omega is gone, Ironcliff's doors are open. I told you. I told you she was fated."

"To the new Luna."

They both laughed.

I didn't move. I didn't breathe hard. I lay on the floor with my fingers on the cold mark and I listened, and the pressure beneath my ribs stirred again — not stirring, this time. Pressing. Something very old, very patient, pushing at a door it had never been allowed to open.

My grief did not disappear. It stepped aside, politely, like someone making room at a table.

I sat up.

I washed my face in the small basin. I opened my observation journal — the one the pack thought was a household ledger — and I turned to a fresh section. At the top I wrote the date, the time, and every word he had said, exactly as he had said it. The Beta's laugh. Isadora's name. Ironcliff's doors.

Then I closed the journal, slid it beneath the loose floorboard I had known about since the first year of my marriage, and went to bed.

***

I made breakfast in the morning.

Eggs the way Bryce liked them. Toast. Coffee for the elders. I set the table for eleven, the way I had every morning for three years, and when the pack came in and saw me standing there in an apron with a tray in my hands, the room went still.

I let my eyes fill. It was not difficult. The mark was still cold.

"I can't leave him," I said, voice trembling exactly the amount it needed to. "Not while his wolf is dying. Please. Let me stay. Let me nurse him. I'd never forgive myself."

Old Marla, who had condescended to me for three years, pressed a hand to her mouth. Someone in the back murmured that the Moon Goddess blessed such loyalty.

Bryce came in through the side door. Saw me. Saw the tray. Saw the pack watching him.

His jaw tightened — the tell I had catalogued in year one.

"Of course," he said. "Of course she can stay."

***

He summoned me that evening.

"Pack your things, Aurora." The Alpha tone rolled out low and heavy, the one that used to make my shoulders drop before my mind caught up. "Leave quietly. Your presence embarrasses us both."

I tilted my head.

"I only want to help you heal." I set a cup of herbal tea on his desk. Chamomile. Valerian. Two other things. "It would be such a shame if the pack wondered why their Alpha turned away the only wolf still willing to nurse him."

His Alpha tone died between us.

He stared at me. Too much eye contact. Far too much.

I smiled, gently, and closed the door behind me.

I was the "perfect" fiancée for Harrison Vincent—regal, silent, and low-maintenance. For two years, I suppressed my career as a forensic accountant to be the "safe" choice that polled well with his family’s shareholders. But at a high-society gala, I found him in a VIP lounge with a socialite wrapped around him. He told her I was just a "boring art piece display stand" he had to drag around until his trust fund was unlocked. I didn't scream or make a scene. I mentally filed a "bad debt" report, tossed my emerald engagement ring into a glass of stale champagne, and walked out of his life. That same night, I found myself in a dark jazz club bathroom, using a strip of my velvet dress to stop the bleeding of a mysterious man with a gunshot wound and eyes like grey flint. The fallout was immediate. Harrison blocked my credit cards, assuming I’d crawl back once I couldn't afford rent. His mother called me a "nobody" while simultaneously begging me to handle the family's medical emergencies because they were too panicked to function. They treated me like a tool they could discard and pick up at will, never realizing I had already moved my things into a cramped Brooklyn apartment. I couldn't understand why they thought I was still their puppet, or why a black Maybach began following me through the city streets. I had saved a stranger's life and ended a toxic engagement, yet the air around me felt heavier and more dangerous than ever. The truth came out at the hospital when the most feared man in the city stepped out of the shadows. It was the man from the bathroom—Collis Vincent, the ruthless head of the family. He didn't just humiliate Harrison; he took my hand in front of everyone and made a chilling declaration. "Harrison is a fool to have let you go, Helena. Your arrangement with him is terminated. From now on, you'll be working with me."
