She calls out to Soren, determined to save her dying child from a sinister plot in this dark, high-stakes fantasy romance.

My Mate Gave Our Baby to His Mistress Chapter 1

Kinslee's throat closed at 3:47 in the afternoon, fourteen minutes into her seventh-birthday ceremony.

I watched her lift the ceremonial wine—silver-laced, traditional, the cup I'd drunk from at her age—and take the ritual sip. Three seconds. Her lips went white. Six seconds. Red blotches erupted across her cheeks like someone had struck her. Nine seconds. She clawed at her neck, the cup shattering on the floor, and I was already moving.

"Soren!" I didn't scream it. A Luna doesn't scream. But every wolf in the hall heard me.

I caught Kinslee as she went down, her small body convulsing in my arms. The pack physician reached us before her knees hit the stone. Soren's hands were already on her throat, his healing aura flaring green-gold as he forced her airway open. I held her steady while he worked, counting her heartbeats against my palm—too fast, too thin, but there.

"Epinephrine," Soren snapped at his assistant. "Now."

Kinslee's eyes rolled back. I pressed my cheek to her hair and made my voice soft, steady, the voice she'd known her whole life. "You're safe, baby. Mama's here."

The injection went in. Her breathing steadied. The hives began to fade. And Soren went very, very still.

I looked up. He was staring at Kinslee's exposed arm where the rash had been worst, his expression wrong—confused, then careful, then blank. His mouth opened.

Dexter's Alpha tone slammed into the room like a fist. "Rare anomaly. Extreme sensitivity. Not unheard of." His voice carried the sub-frequency command that made lesser wolves' spines lock. "Document it and move on."

Soren's mouth closed. He nodded. Wrote something on his tablet. Said nothing.

I filed the look on his face somewhere cold and precise and carried my daughter home.

That evening I went to the border patrol station to thank the wolves who'd helped. The building was quiet, monitors cycling through neighboring pack frequencies—standard security protocol. I was halfway through expressing gratitude when a woman's voice crackled through the speakers, intercepted transmission from a pack two territories over.

"—so he doesn't know I'm telling you this, but I've been seeing an Alpha for years." Laughter, breathless and smug. "Same bed the Luna sleeps in. Same night she gave birth, I did too, same healing ward. They had to hide the silver streak on mine fast—"

The transmission cut. Frequency lost.

I stood at the doorway for exactly four seconds. Then I thanked the border wolves and walked home.

That night, Dexter reached for me in bed like he always did—easy, familiar, his hand sliding over my hip. Through the mate bond, I felt it: warmth that wasn't mine. A scent layered under his skin, floral and cloying. The phantom pressure of someone else's touch still humming through his aura.

I'd dismissed it before. Anxiety, I'd told myself. Paranoia. New-mother hormones that never quite settled.

Now I pressed my face against his shoulder and whispered, "I love you."

He murmured it back without waking.

Behind my ribs, something I thought had died seven years ago began to scream. My wolf—dormant since the night I'd given birth, silent and absent and gone—howled in agony so sharp I couldn't breathe. The mate mark on my neck went ice-cold, then burning, then cold again.

I did not move. I did not shatter.

I stared at the ceiling and began constructing the shape of what had to happen next.

Before dawn, I went to Karla's quarters. Beyond mind-link range. Private.

"I need you to tell me I'm wrong," I said.

Karla looked at me for a long moment. Then she opened her healer's satchel and pulled out a device I'd never seen before—small, metallic, bonded-frequency recorder stamped with a registration code that made it highly illegal to own without Council clearance.

"I've been carrying this for three years," she said quietly. "Waiting."

She played the files. Dexter's voice, ordering wolfsbane doses for a child identified only by Omega number. Fund transfers to an off-territory location. Explicit mind-link exchanges with Margo spanning years—her voice breathy, grateful, his cold and satisfied.

When his voice said, "Increase the wolfsbane. The silver's showing through again," in the same administrative tone he used to approve supply requisitions, I set the recorder down.

"How much more do we need for a Lycan Council tribunal?"

Karla told me. Evidence. Witnesses. Biological verification.

"Then let's get it," I said.

Two days later, I overrode the standard Omega-quarter inspection protocol and went deep. Past the clean front rooms they showed visiting Lunas. Into the cold back halls where they kept the ones nobody asked about.

I found her in the third cell.

Small. Watchful. Utterly silent when I knelt down. Wolfsbane burn scars ran up both arms, old and layered. Her pockets bulged with crusts of stale bread she'd hoarded because she'd learned the world didn't feed her reliably.

I reached toward her.

She went absolutely still.

My wolf slammed against my consciousness so hard my vision went white. My eyes flashed silver—I felt it, two full seconds of light I couldn't control—before I forced them back.

The girl stared at me. I stared back.

Then I stood, completed my inspection with my Luna smile intact, praised the caretakers, and walked to my private quarters.

I made it to the bathroom before I started dry-heaving.

When I could breathe again, I washed my face and sat down at my desk.

Dexter wanted my mother's territory. Three hundred acres, governed by Lycan Bloodright law.

I began drafting the clause that would require a scent-verified biological heir.

And I smiled.
