My Mate Forced Me to Kneel Before His Luna Novel Cover

My Mate Forced Me to Kneel Before His Luna

Marlowe walks into the Alpha suite at three minutes past nine, expecting to be marked. Instead, she finds Khloe Perkins wearing her ceremonial gown and Adam half-dressed, unbothered—as if betrayal had always been the plan. He says her name like she interrupted a meeting, not a life. Humiliated and forced to kneel before another woman's claim, Marlowe faces a brutal choice: surrender to the mate who chose her ruin, or rise from the ashes of a shattered bond and make them all regret the night they broke her.

Chapter 2

By the third morning, the cabin had a rhythm.

I cleared the back room and turned it into a triage space. A folding table, a lamp bright enough for stitches, my satchel unpacked into a row of glass vials on the windowsill. Two Delta warriors from a neighboring pack came in with claw wounds from a border scuffle. A pregnant she-wolf from farther north needed a wolfsbane screening. I worked. That part, at least, was the same as it had always been.

Meilani's care went through a secure relay. Every twelve hours I sent Rosalind a coded dosage schedule, and every twelve hours she confirmed the child was still breathing. It wasn't enough. It was what I had.

Stetson stayed out of the treatment room while I worked. He didn't hover. He didn't check on me. But when I stepped into the kitchen at odd hours, there was always tea already made, and the mug was always the one I'd used the day before, washed and set out again without comment.

On the second day he asked me what hours I preferred to see patients.

I looked at him. "You're asking me?"

"It's your station." He said it plainly, like he was reading a fact off a page. "I'd like to route the schedule around you, not the other way around."

I gave him a range. He wrote it down.

On the third day he asked whether I wanted the healing supplies stored in the north cupboard or the south, because the light was different, and I might have a preference. I stood there for a beat too long before I answered. Nobody had ever asked me where I wanted the supplies. At Ironvale, the supplies had gone where Adam decided they went, and I had worked around them.

"North," I said.

He moved them that afternoon.

I kept waiting.

That's the part I couldn't turn off. Every question, every mug of tea, every time he stepped into a room and stopped a Lycan aide mid-sentence because they'd been about to ask me something in a tone I hadn't even flinched at yet — I catalogued it, and then I waited for the clause. The hidden line at the bottom of the contract. The thing he would eventually want in return.

It didn't come.

I pressed my fingertips to my wrist and told myself it just hadn't come yet.

---

The fourth evening, we were in the front room going over the intake logs. He sat across the table from me, close enough that I could smell him — cedar, something colder underneath, like wind off stone. Nothing performative. Nothing to hide.

He was reading. I was pretending to.

And then, mid-sentence — I was asking him about the courier routes — he turned his head to the side.

Not a stretch. Not a habit. Deliberate. His chin lifted a fraction, the line of his throat exposed on the left, the pulse there visible under the skin. He held it for maybe three seconds. Long enough that I couldn't tell myself I'd imagined it.

Then he turned back and answered my question about courier routes as if nothing had happened.

I knew what it was. Every werewolf knows what it is. A Lycan does not bare his neck. Not to a subordinate, not to a peer, not to a mate he has not marked. It is the one gesture in our world that cannot be taken back once given. He had offered it to me in the middle of a sentence about mail runs, without ceremony, without demand, and then set it down between us like a stone on a table and gone back to work.

I didn't say anything.

I pressed my fingertips to my wrist.

I counted my pulse — steady, too steady — and I filed the moment away in the same drawer where I had put the tea, and the north cupboard, and the way he never once, not once, had reached for the tone that every man with authority over me had reached for by now.

Some part of me registered it. The part Adam had spent five years muffling. It didn't speak. It didn't move. But it heard.

I turned the page in the intake log. "Meilani's morning dose is due at six," I said. My voice came out level. "I'll need the relay line clear."

"It's clear," he said. "It's been clear since you got here."

He didn't look at me when he said it. He didn't need to.

---

Across the border, in the Alpha suite I had walked out of, Adam Sullivan was standing very still.

I didn't see it. I found out later, the way you find out about weather that has already moved through a place. His Beta had come back from the relay stations with a single piece of information, and Adam had received it the way a man receives a diagnosis.

Marlowe Carlson. Neutral-territory cabin. Formal mating alliance. Lycan Prince Stetson Campbell.

He stood by the window for a long time, they said. Not pacing. Not raging. Just standing, one hand at the back of his own neck, touching the place where a mark had never been given.

He had built his authority on a very specific map of the world. On that map, there were pack alphas he could threaten, rivals he could outmaneuver, women he could recall through the thin bond of an unfinished promise.

There was no square on that map for a Lycan Prince.

By the time Declan brought me the news the next morning, Adam had already begun looking for the one thing he still held that I could not walk away from.

Her name was Meilani.
