My Mate Forced Me to Kneel Before His Luna Chapter 1

The Alpha suite door gave way under my palm at three minutes past nine, exactly when the banquet hall below expected Adam to lead me to the dais for the marking.

The room smelled wrong before I saw anything. Magnolia, sweet and overripe, tangled with something cheaper underneath it — cologne gone stale, maybe, or just sweat. It sat on Adam's skin like a second layer he hadn't bothered to wash off.

Khloe Perkins was stretched across the bed in my ceremonial gown, the one I'd had fitted for tonight, silver thread catching the lamp light. She didn't move when I opened the door. She just smiled, slow and satisfied, like she'd been waiting for me to walk in on purpose.

Adam sat in the chair by the window, shirt half-buttoned, not even startled.

"Marlowe." He said my name the way you'd address someone who'd interrupted a meeting.

I didn't ask. I didn't need to. Five years of learning a man's scent teaches you to read it faster than words. "You could have locked the door."

"I could have." He stood, unhurried, reaching for his shirt. "Doesn't seem like there's much left to hide."

Khloe laughed — a small, bright sound, cruelty dressed as amusement. "It's a nicer fit on me anyway," she said, smoothing the gown over her hip. "Don't you think?"

I didn't answer her. I looked at Adam.

"You promised the marking tonight." My voice came out flat. I registered, distantly, that I wasn't shaking.

"I promised a lot of things." He buttoned his shirt slowly, watching me in the mirror instead of turning around. "But a Luna needs a wolf, Marlowe. Khloe's wolf is beautiful. Yours—" he shrugged, like he was discussing inventory. "Yours never showed up. Five years, and nothing. You want me to put a permanent mark on a woman who's basically an Omega with good hands?"

Something in my chest went still and cold, the way a held breath goes cold. Under my skin, buried so deep I'd stopped listening for it years ago, something stirred — a single, thin whimper, wordless, ancient, gone before I could name it. The bond between us — thin, informal, never sealed with a mark — I felt it the way you feel a door closing in an empty house. Not slammed. Just shut, quietly, on a room that had never had furniture in it.

"You're welcome to stay," Adam added, almost generous. "Keep healing. Khloe doesn't mind sharing you as a resource."

I pressed my fingertips to my wrist — an old habit, counting my own pulse instead of my humiliation — and felt the tremor pass through me and out again, like weather.

I didn't scream. I didn't ask him to reconsider. I turned and walked out of the suite, down the corridor, past the banquet hall still lit gold and full of pack members waiting for a ceremony that would never happen. Nobody stopped me. I collected my healer satchel from the infirmary — Meilani's treatment file folded inside it — and I left the Ironvale pack house with exactly what I'd walked in with, five years ago: myself, and nothing else that was mine.

By midnight I'd reached the neutral relay station I'd used for years to order cross-pack supplies. I logged into my own healer credentials — still active, still mine, for a few more hours — and rerouted Meilani's remaining antidote reserve to a drop point outside Ironvale's border, before Adam could think to freeze the account. Then I opened the one communication channel that had never belonged to him: a line to Stetson Campbell, Lycan Prince of the Western Territories, a man I'd known since the Academy and never once asked for anything.

I didn't write to him as a woman with nowhere to go. I wrote as a healer with a rare gift and a patient who needed protecting, offering my bloodline into his territory's medical infrastructure in exchange for resources and autonomy. One condition, non-negotiable: no marking until I said so.

He answered within the hour.

His cabin sat just past the neutral border, plain and unguarded, nothing like a prince's house should look. Stetson read my terms twice, out loud, and didn't change a single line.

"Agreed," he said. Then, after a pause that felt longer than it was: "Would you like tea?"

Nobody had asked me a question like that in five years. I said yes before I could think better of it.

Two days later, Stetson's Beta, Declan Holt, came through the cabin door without knocking, snow still on his boots. "Ironvale installed the Perkins girl as Luna-designate this morning," he said, not looking at me, looking at Stetson instead. "Half the pack didn't even show up for the ceremony. And Sullivan's been asking around — quietly — about where your healer credentials went."

Stetson's eyes didn't leave mine. "How quietly?"

Declan's mouth flattened. "Not quietly enough to matter. He's already sent someone to trace the reroute."
