Chapter 4

Darren's phone buzzed twice before he answered it, listened, and set it face-down on the cabin table like it had bitten him.

"Blake filed the territorial claim an hour ago," he said. "And he held the Luna ceremony at dusk. Shelby's wearing the title now. Public. Witnessed."

Something in my chest went white-hot.

It wasn't grief. Grief I knew the shape of — I'd been carrying it for a day and a half like a stone in my coat pocket. This was different. This had teeth. The ember at the edge of my consciousness, the one that had been flickering since the safe house, flared so sharply I felt it in my back teeth.

I pressed my thumb into my wrist. Counted. It didn't help the way it usually did.

"Caroline." Darren's voice, careful. "You're shaking."

"I know."

"Do you need—"

"I need a pen," I said, "and every page in that folder laid out in order."

He didn't argue. He cleared the table.

I worked through the night. Not because I couldn't sleep — though I couldn't — but because the anger needed somewhere to go, and I had learned a long time ago that a feeling with nowhere to go becomes a weapon pointed at yourself. So I pointed it at the page instead. Marcus Kade's testimony, sequenced against the dates on the mimicry vial. Rayna's dosage logs, cross-referenced with the timeline of my wolf's silence, month by month, a woman's biology reduced to a chart of someone else's careful sabotage. The territorial claim Blake had filed, and beneath it, in my own hand, the older claim — the one that had been mine since before I could walk, dormant but never dissolved.

By the time grey light came through the cabin's one window, I had a document that didn't beg for anything.

Darren read the last page and set it down without a word for a long moment.

"This isn't a petition," he said finally. "This is a case."

"Good," I said. "I'm ready to see the Prince."

—

Kieran Hale's stronghold sat at the top of a mountain road that switchbacked so many times I lost count, stone walls rising out of the tree line like something that had always been there and always would be. I walked into his hall in the same clothes I'd left Shadowvale in, my mark a cold dead scar under my collar, my wolf a silence with an edge to it. I did not look like a woman with leverage.

I stood straight anyway.

"I'm not here to ask for protection," I told him, before he could offer the polite deflection I could see forming behind his eyes — a subcommittee, a referral, the diplomatic version of a closed door. "I'm here with a documented fraudulent mate bond, a suppressed royal bloodline, and a territorial claim that predates Shadowvale's charter. I'd like five minutes before you decide I'm someone else's problem."

He studied me. Unhurried, the way a man studies something he's already decided is worth the time, even if he hasn't admitted it yet.

I stepped closer to hand him the folder.

He went still.

Not polite-still. Not diplomat-still. Absolutely still, the kind of stillness I'd only ever seen in a wolf that's caught a scent it wasn't prepared for — and I counted it without meaning to, the way I count everything when the ground shifts. One. Two. Three. Four seconds, and something moved behind his eyes that had nothing to do with statutes or Council law.

Then it was gone, folded back under whatever discipline kept a Lycan Prince's face unreadable.

"Sit," he said. His voice had changed by half a degree — I couldn't have told you what, only that I heard it. "Tell me everything."

I did. And by the time I finished, he said, "I'll bring this before the Council myself," in a tone that closed the matter the way a door closes, no room left for argument.

—

The days that followed blurred into work. His study became our war room — my evidence spread across his desk, his statutes stacked beside mine, the two of us building something neither of us named out loud. Every session, I noticed something new about him: the way he never repeated a question, the way his silences carried more than most men's speeches. And every session, something in me kept climbing toward the surface, faint and warm, in a way I didn't trust because the last time I'd trusted a pull like this, it had been poured out of an amber vial.

It was late on the fourth night when I reached across the desk to correct a line in the petition draft, and my hand passed within inches of his.

He went still again.

And this time, I noticed.
