Chapter 5

Darren called at noon, his voice clipped in the way it got when he'd been awake too long doing something that mattered.

"Kade signed it," he said. "Full statement. Blake hired his crew eighteen months before the wedding. Paid upfront. Even the patrol gap — Blake arranged that himself, pulled the Shadowvale border shift so there'd be no witnesses until he wanted them."

I sat very still, phone pressed to my ear, watching the mountain fog move through the pines outside Kieran's study window.

"There's one more thing," Darren said. "Kade says Blake gave specific instructions. He wasn't supposed to arrive in time to stop it. He was supposed to arrive in time to look like he almost hadn't."

I closed my eyes.

Five years of gratitude, built on a man's careful math about how many seconds of terror would make a rescue look real.

"I filed it under Kieran's authority," Darren went on. "Before Blake's people could touch the registry. It's locked into Council record now. He can't make it disappear."

"Good," I said. My voice came out steadier than I expected. "Thank you, Darren."

He hung up without saying goodbye, which was Darren's way of saying he was proud of me and didn't have the words for it.

—

The rest came in pieces over the following two days, filtered through Darren's contacts inside Shadowvale, the way water finds its way through cracks in a foundation no one thought to check.

Blake had learned about the tribunal through a Council contact — learned that Kieran himself was championing the petition, which meant this wasn't some backroom grievance he could smooth over with an Alpha's charm. He'd sent Rayna to retrieve her journal that same evening. She'd torn apart her own study looking for it, according to the source, before realizing what should have been obvious: it was already gone, already sealed in Darren's files, already breathing in the Council's evidence registry like something that couldn't be unbreathed.

Blake's composure hadn't cracked. Not in front of the pack. That evening he'd summoned Shelby to his study and told her, according to the account Darren passed along, that the tribunal was a procedural inconvenience — that his Alpha title and the Council's traditional deference to pack sovereignty would resolve it easily, the way it always had for men like him.

Shelby had listened. Agreed. Smiled, probably, the way she smiled at everything Blake needed her to smile at.

And then, later that night, she had made a private calculation about what she would do if he was wrong.

I didn't know the shape of that calculation yet. I only knew, reading between Darren's careful sentences, that Shelby Henderson had never once in her life bet on a losing hand without an exit already prepared.

—

The night before the tribunal, I couldn't sit inside Kieran's stronghold with its warm light and its careful silence. I went out to the ridge instead, where the wind came down off the peak clean and cold, and I sat on a flat stone with my knees pulled up and tried, for the first time since the healer's chamber, to reach for whatever was left of my wolf on purpose.

I expected silence. I'd gotten used to silence.

What I found was heat.

Not pain. Not the phantom burn of my dead mark. Something else — low, steady, building the way a tide builds, pressure gathering in a place I couldn't name. My wolf didn't speak. She never had, not once in five years of a bond that was never real. But she was there, banked like coals under ash, and the ash was thinning.

I pressed my thumb hard against the pulse point on my wrist. Counted.

My heartbeat had changed. Steadier. Heavier. Older, somehow, like it belonged to someone who had been waiting a very long time to be let out.

I didn't tell Kieran. I filed it the way I filed everything that mattered — quietly, precisely, entirely my own.

He found me anyway, the way he seemed to find everything eventually. He didn't ask what I was doing out there in the cold with my arms wrapped around my knees. He just stood beside me, close enough that his scent moved through the wind toward me — pine, winter steel, something underneath that had no name I knew.

The ember flared.

I felt it happen before I could stop it, a surge of heat low in my chest that had nothing to do with the cold and everything to do with the man standing a foot away, saying nothing.

"Whatever happens tomorrow," Kieran said finally, "you have already won the part that matters."

"Which part."

"You know what was real and what wasn't." His voice didn't change register, but something behind it did. "Most people never get that."

He went back inside without waiting for an answer.

I stayed on the ridge. The cold cut through my coat, through my skin, down to whatever was banked and waiting beneath it.

The ember surged once more, hard, like something answering a call I hadn't spoken aloud.

I didn't move. I let it burn.
