Chapter 3

Darren set the vial on the table between us like it was a live grenade.

It was small. Amber glass, no bigger than my thumb. The label was in Blake's handwriting — neat, controlled, the same script he used to sign pack documents. *Mate-Scent Mimicry — Alchemical Grade.* Dated two weeks before he "rescued" me.

I stared at it. My brain knew what it meant. My body hadn't caught up yet.

"He kept it," I said. My voice sounded flat, distant. "He didn't destroy it. He kept it."

"In a locked compartment," Darren said. "Behind a false panel in his study. I had to pull the whole bookshelf out to find it."

I reached for the vial. Darren's hand shot out and stopped mine mid-air.

"Don't," he said quietly. "Even residue can trigger a reaction if you're not prepared for it."

I pulled my hand back. Pressed my thumb hard against my wrist. Counted.

Darren reached into his bag and set a second item on the table. A journal. Leather-bound, expensive. The kind Rayna used for everything she considered important.

I recognized it immediately.

"She kept records," Darren said. "Every dose. Every adjustment. Five years' worth."

I opened it.

The first entry was dated three days after my wedding. *Initial dosage: 15ml bloodline suppressant, administered via morning tea blend. Subject unaware. Scent masking effective within 48 hours.*

I turned the page.

*Week 4: Dosage increased to 20ml. No adverse reaction. Subject's wolf remains dormant. Aura stable at mid-tier Luna range. No detection risk.*

Another page.

*Month 6: Seasonal herb rotation complete. Scent remains fully masked. No detection risk at current dosage.*

I read every entry. Every careful notation. Every clinical observation of my body, my wolf, my scent, recorded like I was a lab specimen.

When I reached the final entry — dated four days before Lakelyn's poisoning — my hands were shaking so hard I had to set the journal down.

*Year 5, Month 8: Suppressant efficacy confirmed. Subject shows no awareness of bloodline heritage. Proceed with heir contingency plan.*

I closed the journal. My thumb found my wrist again. The pulse under my skin felt too fast, too loud.

"What territory do I have?" I asked.

Darren didn't hesitate. He'd been waiting for that question.

"Your family held unclaimed royal lands," he said. "Vast. Bordering three pack territories, including Shadowvale. When you were taken as an infant, the claim went dormant but never dissolved. It's still legally yours. Blake knew. That's why he staged the rescue. That's why he married you."

I looked at him. "How much land?"

"Enough that whoever controls it controls the region's trade routes and water access." Darren leaned forward. "Blake's been trying to get your signature on a territorial transfer for five years. You never gave it to him. That's why he needed the bond to look real. That's why Rayna kept you suppressed. They needed you compliant."

Something stirred at the edges of my consciousness. Faint. Barely there. Like a breath on the back of my neck.

My wolf.

Not awake. Not speaking. Just... present. A flicker of heat under ash.

I went very still.

Darren noticed. "Caroline?"

"She's there," I said quietly. "Not gone. Just... buried."

His expression shifted. Not surprise. Something closer to grim satisfaction.

"Then we move fast," he said. "Before Blake realizes you're not as broken as he thinks."

I pressed my palm flat against the table. Steadied myself.

"I need to know everything about the Lycan Council's tribunal jurisdiction," I said. "Fraudulent mate bonds. Suppressed bloodlines. What grounds do I have?"

Darren reached into his bag and pulled out a third folder. Thicker than the first two.

"I already pulled the statutes," he said. "Fraudulent mate bonds fall under Lycan Council jurisdiction if they involve territorial fraud or bloodline suppression. You have both. Blake filed a formal territorial claim with the Council three days ago, asserting the unclaimed lands are rightfully Shadowvale's. He's trying to lock it down before you can contest it."

I opened the folder. Legal documents. Council precedents. Case law.

I read the first statute. Then the second. My hands stopped shaking.

"He's moving fast because he's scared," I said.

Darren nodded. "He doesn't know what you have. But he knows you're alive, and that's enough to make him nervous."

I turned another page. A tribunal petition form. Blank. Waiting.

"What happened in Shadowvale today?" I asked.

Darren's jaw tightened. "Blake held a ceremony. Installed Shelby as Luna. Rayna presided. Full pack assembly."

I didn't flinch. I'd expected it.

"And?"

"Shelby's already in your rooms. Rayna destroyed the healer's chamber records — the moonpetal diversion, the ritual authorization, all of it. Blake's cleaning up loose ends."

I looked down at the vial on the table. At Rayna's journal. At the legal statutes in front of me.

Five years of my life, reduced to evidence.

But evidence was leverage. And leverage was power.

I reached for a pen.

"Tell me everything I need to file a petition to the Lycan Council," I said. "And then tell me how to get an audience with Kieran Hale."

Darren almost smiled. It wasn't a happy expression, but it was real.

"Already done," he said. "We leave at dawn."

I pressed my thumb to my wrist one last time. Felt my pulse. Steady now.

That faint flicker of heat at the edge of my consciousness pulsed once, like an ember catching air.

My wolf was still there.

And she was waiting.
