Chapter 2

They dropped me at the border just before dawn, when the sky was still that bruised grey color that makes everything look unfinished. Two Deltas I'd known for five years — Marcus and Joel, who used to nod respectfully when I passed in the corridors — lifted me out of the transport van like I was cargo. My feet hit frozen ground. One of them set a small cedar box beside me. The other wouldn't meet my eyes.

The van pulled away. I watched the taillights disappear through the trees, back toward Shadowvale, back toward the only home I'd known since Blake "rescued" me, back toward my daughter sleeping in a bed I could no longer reach.

I had the clothes on my back. The cedar box. And a mark on my neck that felt like scar tissue over a wound that wouldn't close.

I sat down on the cold ground. My wolf was silent — not sleeping, not resting, just gone in a way that had an edge to it. I pressed my thumb hard against the pulse point on my wrist and counted. Two minutes. I would allow myself two minutes of sitting here, of letting the reality settle into my bones the way poison settles.

Lakelyn was alive. That was the only math that mattered.

At the two-minute mark, I stood. My legs shook, but they held. I picked up the cedar box — letters my daughter had dictated before she could write, folded in careful creases, the only thing I'd grabbed in the sixty seconds they'd given me to leave — and oriented myself by the tree line. East. There was an old logging road that ran parallel to the border. If I could make it there, I could follow it to neutral territory.

I started walking.

The phantom pain in my mark hit around the one-hour point. It felt like someone had pressed a hot iron to the base of my neck, except there was no heat, no source, just the sensation of something burning that was no longer there. I stopped, breathed through it, and kept moving.

The sun was fully up when I heard the car.

I turned, ready to run if it was Shadowvale Deltas coming back to finish what Blake had started. But the vehicle that pulled up beside me was an old sedan, civilian plates, and the man who stepped out was Darren.

He didn't say anything at first. Just looked at me — standing on a frozen logging road with a cedar box clutched to my chest and a guttered aura that probably read Omega to anyone with a nose — and his jaw tightened.

"You need to eat before you read what I brought," he said finally.

I blinked at him. "Darren—"

"There's a safe house. Unregistered. Twenty minutes from here." He opened the passenger door. "Get in."

I got in.

He drove in silence, which I was grateful for, because I didn't have words yet. The cabin he brought me to was small, tucked back in the trees, with no pack scent-markers anywhere near it. He unlocked the door, set a thermos on the table, and placed a manila folder beside it.

"Broth," he said, nodding at the thermos. "Drink it. Then open the folder."

"Darren, what—"

"Eat first." He met my eyes. "Trust me on this."

I drank the broth. It was still warm. I hadn't realized how cold I was until the heat hit my stomach and I started shaking harder.

Darren sat across from me and waited.

When I finished, I reached for the folder. My hands were steadier than I expected. I opened it.

The first page was a detention record. Marcus Kade. Rogue. Captured six months ago in a raid on the northern territories. The second page was a transcript — an interrogation, formal, with a Lycan Council seal at the top.

I read the first line.

*"Blake Turner hired us. Paid upfront. Told us exactly where to wait, exactly when the Luna would be passing through."*

I stopped breathing.

"Keep reading," Darren said quietly.

I read the whole thing. The staged attack. The choreographed timing. The patrol gap Blake had arranged personally. The moment Marcus and his crew were supposed to "flee" so Blake could arrive and play hero.

I set the transcript down. My hands weren't shaking anymore. They were very, very still.

"Did he use the oil before or after the attack?" I asked.

Darren reached across the table and turned to the next page.

It was a photo. A small glass vial, amber-colored, with a handwritten label in Blake's script: *Mate-Scent Mimicry — Alchemical Grade.*

Found in a locked compartment in his study. Dated two weeks before my "rescue."

I stared at the photo. At the vial. At the label in his handwriting.

Five years. Five years of a bond I thought the Moon Goddess herself had chosen. Five years of devotion, of enduring Rayna's contempt, of telling myself the coldness in the mate-pull was my failing, not his fraud.

It had never been real.

Not the rescue. Not the bond. Not the scent that had pulled me to him like gravity.

All of it — manufactured.

"There's more," Darren said. "Rayna's journal. Suppressant herb records. She's been dosing you since the wedding. Your wolf never awakened because she never let it."

I looked up at him. "Why are you showing me this?"

"Because you need leverage." He leaned forward. "And because you have more than you know. Those unclaimed lands your family held before you were taken — they're still legally yours. Blake married you to get access to them. He can't touch them without your signature, and he doesn't have it."

I pressed my thumb to my wrist. Counted.

"What do I do with this?"

Darren's expression didn't change. "You take it to someone who can use it. Someone Blake can't touch."

"Who?"

"The Lycan Prince," Darren said. "Kieran Hale."

I sat back. The phantom mark-pain flared again, sharp and cold.

"And what makes you think he'll listen?"

Darren almost smiled. It wasn't a happy expression.

"Because you're not asking for mercy, Caroline. You're bringing him a case."

I looked down at the folder. At Marcus Kade's testimony. At the photo of the vial.

At five years of my life, reduced to evidence.

I closed the folder. My hands were steady.

"Then let's build one."
