My Mate Broke Our Bond at the Altar Chapter 1

The bond broke at exactly 10:14 p.m. on the night of my Mate Ceremony.

I felt it the second Cassian's teeth grazed my neck—not the completion I'd waited seven years for, but the absence of it. The half-formed mark flared scorching hot against my skin, then went dead cold in a single nauseating instant. Like someone had poured ice water directly into my veins.

He pulled back.

I stood there at the altar, three hundred wolves watching from the ceremonial hall behind us, and I knew before he opened his mouth. I'd known for months, really. The cheap gardenia scent that clung to his collar every time he came back through mind-link range. The way he'd stopped meeting my eyes during pack meetings. The careful distance he kept between us even when we stood side by side.

But knowing and hearing are different things.

"I, Cassian, Alpha of Silverfang, reject you, Amira Price, as my mate and Luna."

His voice was formal. Deliberate. Loud enough to carry.

The bond fractured like a snapped bone—I felt the exact moment it broke, a physical snap somewhere behind my ribs. My wolf, already so weak she barely stirred anymore, went completely silent. Not dormant. Not sleeping. Just... gone. The space where she used to live was suddenly empty, a void so cold it made my lungs ache.

I didn't fall. I wanted to. My knees threatened to buckle, my vision blurred at the edges, but I locked my legs and stayed upright.

Cassian's phone buzzed. He pulled it out without looking at me, his jaw tightening as he read whatever was on the screen. "Rogue attack. Eastern border." He said it to the pack elders standing behind us, not to me. "Bella's calling for backup."

Of course she was.

He turned and ran. Shifted mid-stride into his wolf form—dark gray, powerful, the Alpha aura radiating off him in waves—and disappeared through the pack house doors. He didn't look back. Not once.

The hall went silent.

Three hundred wolves stared at me. I stood alone at the altar, the dead mark cooling against my neck like a brand made of ice, and not one of them moved. Not one of them spoke. They just... looked. Some with pity. Some with barely concealed satisfaction. Most with the careful blankness of people who'd already decided this wasn't their problem.

I pressed two fingers to the mark. It felt wrong. Not painful—worse than painful. Numb. Empty. Like touching a scar that had healed over a wound I didn't remember getting.

My wolf should have been howling. She should have been clawing at the inside of my chest, raging against the rejection, demanding I fight back. But there was nothing. Just the cold and the silence and the void.

I took one breath. Then another.

Then I walked to the ceremonial microphone.

My hands didn't shake when I picked it up. I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I just spoke, low and clear, my voice carrying to every corner of that silent hall.

"I accept the severance. The bond is void—on my terms, not his."

I set the microphone down. The sound of it clicking against the stand was the only noise in the entire room.

I descended the dais. One step. Then another. My legs felt like they belonged to someone else, but they held. I crossed the hall under three hundred pairs of averted eyes. No one tried to stop me. No one said a word.

I picked up my mother's medical kit from the side table where I'd left it before the ceremony. The wolfsbane-laced kit she'd spent years teaching me to use, the one that held my late father's serum vials—the suppressants that had kept my Lycan bloodline invisible my entire life. It was the only thing I took.

I walked out of the pack house into the night.

The air outside was cold. Sharp. It cut through the thin ceremonial dress I was still wearing, but I barely felt it. I made it down the stone steps before my knees finally gave out.

I sat down hard on the bottom step, the medical kit clutched in my lap, and pressed both hands to the mark on my neck. Ninety seconds. I gave myself exactly ninety seconds to feel it—the grief, the rage, the humiliation, all of it cresting like a wave that wanted to drown me.

My chest heaved. My throat burned. But I didn't cry.

When the ninety seconds were up, I opened the medical kit. The serum vials were right where they always were, lined up in their foam slots, the clear liquid inside catching the moonlight. I'd been taking them every night since I was thirteen. My father's last gift. His protection.

I stared at them for a long moment.

Then I closed the kit without taking a single dose.

For the first time in my adult life, I didn't.

I stood up, smoothed down the front of my dress, and walked toward the guest wing where Kamari was waiting. The cold mark on my neck and the silent void where my wolf used to be were the only things I carried besides the kit.

Kamari was standing in the doorway when I arrived. Arms crossed. Jaw tight. She'd watched the whole thing from the back of the hall—I'd seen her there, standing perfectly still while everyone else shifted and whispered.

She didn't hug me. Didn't offer sympathy. She just looked at me for a long moment, then asked one question.

"Did you take the serum tonight?"

I shook my head.

Something shifted in her expression. Not surprise. Recognition. Like a suspicion she'd been holding for years had just been confirmed.

"Good," she said quietly. Then she stepped aside to let me in.

I walked past her into the small guest room. It smelled like sage and old wood, nothing like the Luna quarters I'd been living in for the past seven years. Kamari closed the door behind us and slid a folded document across the table.

"Luna Accord clause," she said. "Already printed. Already annotated. His access to your wing is revocable under pack law as of this morning. Sign it. I'll file it at dawn."

I picked up the paper. My hands were steady now. I read it once, quickly, then signed my name at the bottom in clear, deliberate strokes.

Kamari took it back, folded it, and tucked it into her jacket. "He's not getting back in," she said. "Not into your quarters. Not into your space. Not anywhere near you unless you allow it."

I nodded. My throat was too tight to speak.

She looked at me for another long moment, then said, "I noticed the suppression signature in your scent years ago. I didn't say anything. I was waiting for you to come to it yourself."

I blinked. "You knew?"

"I suspected." She pulled out a chair and sat down across from me. "Your wolf shouldn't have been that weak. Not naturally. Not for someone from your bloodline. So either something was suppressing her, or—" She stopped. "Or she was never supposed to be weak in the first place."

I stared at her. The serum vials in my mother's kit suddenly felt heavier.

"What happens now?" I asked.

Kamari leaned back in her chair. "Now?" She smiled, thin and sharp. "Now we stop playing by his rules."

Outside, somewhere in the distance, I heard a wolf howl. Not Cassian. Someone else. The sound echoed through the night, lonely and raw.

I pressed my fingers to the cold mark one more time.

Then I let my hand drop.
