Chapter 1

The Moon Goddess had blessed me with a mate. At least, that's what I believed when I first laid eyes on James.

He stood tall and proud, his broad shoulders squared as he approached me at the mating ceremony. My heart fluttered with childish excitement as he took my hand. I was eighteen, a gentle Omega who had spent years dreaming of this moment.

"I'm your fated mate," I whispered, my voice trembling with joy.

His eyes—cold and calculating—swept over me before his lips curled into a sneer. "A Beta paired with an Omega. The Moon Goddess has a sick sense of humor."

I didn't understand then. How could I? The mate bond was sacred, blessed by the Moon herself. Surely he would come to love me as I already loved him.

But James never saw me as his equal. To him, I was a stain on his reputation, a reminder that even the mighty Beta could be cursed with an Omega mate.

---

"Get on your knees," James commanded, his voice echoing through the warriors' training grounds.

The sun had barely risen, but I was already there, as instructed. My knees sank into the damp earth as the warriors finished their morning run, their boots caked with mud and blood from the training exercises.

"Lick them clean," he ordered, gesturing to the first warrior's boots.

I hesitated, my cheeks burning with humiliation. "James, please—"

"That's an order from your Beta," he snapped, his eyes flashing dangerously.

The warrior—a tall, muscular man with a scar across his jaw—grinned down at me. "Come on, little Omega. Don't make us wait."

Slowly, I leaned forward and began to clean his boots with my tongue. The taste of dirt and blood filled my mouth as laughter erupted around me.

"Look at that," James chuckled. "At least she's good for something."

This became my daily ritual. After training, James would bring me to the warriors. Sometimes it was boots. Other times, it was their sweat-soaked clothes that needed washing—by hand, with my skin scrubbing against theirs.

"You're nothing but a servant," James would remind me, his voice dripping with disgust. "A worthless Omega who should be grateful I even marked you."

---

"My Beta deserves better than this," Sophie purred, her fingers trailing down James's chest as they stood before me.

I had walked into our den to find them together, her lips on his neck where my mark should have been sacred.

"Watch and learn," James commanded, not even bothering to push her away. "See how a real woman pleases her man."

Sophie's eyes gleamed with cruel delight as she kissed him deeper. "Poor little Omega," she murmured against his lips. "So pathetic."

I stood frozen, my heart shattering as they continued before me. James gripped Sophie's waist, his eyes locked on mine, forcing me to witness their betrayal.

"This is what you should aspire to," he said coldly. "Though we both know you never will."

Sophie laughed, a high, tinkling sound that cut through me like glass. "She's just a toy, James. A disposable little thing."

---

The pain was excruciating as the branding iron pressed against my back. The metal had been heated until it glowed red in the fire pit, and now it seared my flesh with brutal efficiency.

"Stop crying," Sophie hissed, twisting the iron to ensure the letters were deep enough. "It's pathetic."

"Please," I whimpered, my body convulsing as the letters "T-R-A-S-H" burned into my skin. The smell of my own flesh cooking filled my nostrils as tears streamed down my face.

James watched from nearby, his expression one of bored amusement. "Make sure it's nice and visible," he instructed. "I want everyone to see what she is."

The iron dug deeper, and I screamed until my voice gave out. Blood pooled beneath me as Sophie finally removed the brand, admiring her handiwork.

"There," she said with satisfaction. "Now you're properly marked—inside and out."

---

The worst moment came when I discovered I was pregnant. For a brief, beautiful moment, hope flickered in my chest. A pup—our pup. Maybe this would change things. Maybe James would finally see me as worthy.

I told him with trembling lips and eager eyes.

His response was a kick to my stomach—hard and deliberate.

"No Omega's bastard will carry my blood," he snarled, his face contorted with rage.

I fell to the ground, clutching my abdomen as pain tore through me. Blood soaked through my dress as I curled into myself.

"James," I gasped, reaching for him as my vision blurred. "Please... help me..."

He stepped back, disgust etched across his features. "Clean yourself up. You're making a mess."

The baby—my baby—slipped from my body in a rush of blood and pain. A tiny, perfect form, already forming fingers and toes. I cradled the lifeless body against my chest as sobs wracked my frame.

"Get rid of it," James ordered, turning away. "It's disgusting."

---

The pack gathered in the clearing as the full moon rose overhead. My hands were bound with silver chains that burned against my skin as James dragged me forward.

"The Omega has been accused of theft," he announced to the assembled wolves. "She stole from our Alpha's family."

Lies. All lies. But no one would defend an Omega against their Beta.

"The punishment is the Clawing," Alpha Marcus declared, his aging face solemn. "Each pack member will mark their judgment."

One by one, they came forward. Claws extended, eyes cold. Each slash left its mark on my already scarred body. Blood poured from a hundred wounds as I knelt in the dirt.

"Please," I begged, my voice barely audible. "I've done nothing..."

But they kept coming. The pain became a blur, a symphony of agony as my body was torn apart. Bones showed through in places, my organs exposed to the night air.

James was last. He approached slowly, savoring the moment.

"You should have been a better mate," he said, almost gently.

Then his claws plunged into my chest, straight to my heart.

"Goodbye, Lily," he whispered as darkness claimed me.

Through the haze of death, I saw him—Nathan, the pack's Healer. His eyes were filled with tears as he watched me die.

"If I had been braver," he whispered, so softly no one else could hear. "If I had stood up to him..."

My last thought was of his face—the only one who had ever shown me kindness—as my heart stopped beating.

But as the darkness took me, something stirred within my blood. A promise. A vow.

This wasn't over.

I stood frozen as the crimson liquid pooled at my feet, staining the pristine white marble of the ceremonial hall. The sacred wine meant to honor the Moon Goddess now dripped from my trembling fingers, the ceremonial chalice lying broken beside me. Silence descended upon the gathered pack members, their eyes boring into me with a mixture of pity and disdain. "You clumsy, pathetic excuse for a Luna," Alexander's voice cut through the silence, each word laced with venom. "Can you not even perform the simplest of duties without embarrassing this pack?" I looked up to meet his gaze, those piercing blue eyes I had once found so beautiful now cold with contempt. My wolf, Luna, whimpered deep within me, curling further into herself as she had done countless times over our three years of mating. "I-I'm sorry, Alpha," I whispered, my voice barely audible. "Vanessa bumped into me and—" "Don't you dare blame my true mate for your incompetence," Alexander snarled, his Alpha tone washing over me like a physical blow. Behind him, my sister's lips curved into a satisfied smile, her eyes glinting with triumph as she pressed herself closer to his side. "Of course not," I murmured, lowering my gaze as heat rushed to my cheeks.

The afternoon sun streamed through the windows of Moonlight Werewolf Preschool as I hurried down the hallway, my heart already racing from the urgent phone call. River was in trouble again. My hands trembled as I pushed open the door to the principal's office, and the scene that greeted me made my wolf stir restlessly beneath my skin for the first time in months. River sat hunched in a small chair, his dark hair tousled and a streak of dried blood under his nose. His little hands were clenched into fists, and even from across the room, I could sense his wolf pacing anxiously—far too strong for a five-year-old. She sat with her back straight, one manicured hand resting protectively on her son Marco's shoulder. The boy was sniffling dramatically, though I noticed he kept peeking at River with satisfied malice. "Ms.

I moved through the great hall with practiced grace, nodding to pack members as they bowed their heads in respect. Eight years as Luna of the Silvermoon Pack had taught me the choreography of power—when to smile, when to listen, when to command. The morning light streamed through the tall windows, casting long shadows across the polished stone floor as I settled into my usual chair at the head table. Marcus appeared from his study, his broad shoulders filling the doorframe. His eyes found mine across the room, and his lips curved into that smile I'd fallen for all those years ago. "Good morning, my Luna," he said, crossing to place a kiss on my forehead. "I've prepared your tea." I accepted the steaming cup with a grateful smile. "You spoil me, Alpha." "Nothing less than you deserve." His fingers lingered on mine a moment longer than necessary before he turned to address the Beta about border patrols. I inhaled the familiar scent of moon herbs—lavender, chamomile, and something else I could never quite identify. Marcus had started brewing this special blend for me six months ago, insisting it would help with the stress of Luna duties.
