Chapter 3

The smoke was thick enough to taste. It coated my throat, my lungs, every breath a fight I was losing. The flames had reached the support beam. The chain rattled as I pulled again, silver biting deeper into my wrists. Blood ran down my arms, mixing with the wolfsbane compound. My wolf was still howling inside me — not the faint thing I'd known for years, but something vast and furious, slamming against the suppression like it could break through by sheer force.

It couldn't.

Then I heard footsteps outside.

Not running. Walking. Steady. Deliberate.

The door opened.

Jonas stood in the frame, backlit by the clearing beyond. Smoke poured past him into the open air. He didn't cough. Didn't flinch. Just stood there, looking at me.

I tried to speak. My throat closed around the words.

Behind him, Coraline was screaming. "She set it herself! I tried to stop her — Jonas, please, we have to go—"

He didn't turn toward her. He was looking at me. At the chains. At the blood on my wrists. At the flames crawling up the walls behind me.

His Alpha ring caught the firelight. I watched it rotate on his finger. Once. Twice. The habit I'd noticed years ago and never mentioned. The thing he did when he knew he was making the wrong choice and was going to make it anyway.

My wolf stopped howling.

Not because the wolfsbane won. Because she knew.

"I, Jonas Evans, Alpha of Ironveil," he said.

His voice was steady. Clear. The Alpha tone he used for formal pack business. The one that carried across three hundred wolves and made them listen.

"Reject you, Lyla Bennett, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck didn't hurt at first.

It went cold. Ice-cold. Like someone had pressed frozen metal against my skin and held it there. Then it cracked. I felt it split — not the skin, but something underneath, something deeper than flesh. The bond that had lived there for ten years, warm and constant, the thing I'd built my entire life around — it tore.

My wolf howled.

One sound. Raw and broken and so loud inside my head that I thought the flames would hear it. The sound of something being ripped out at the root.

Then silence.

Complete. Total. The kind of silence I hadn't known since I was sixteen and the bond first formed. My wolf was gone. Not suppressed. Not dormant. Gone.

The mark on my neck went white. I felt it die under my skin, the tissue turning cold and hard, a scar forming in real time.

Jonas turned away.

Coraline was still screaming, her hands reaching for him, her face a mask of terror that would have been convincing if I hadn't seen her light the match. He lifted her. Cradled her against his chest the way he used to hold me, back when the bond was new and I still believed it meant something.

He walked toward the tree line.

I watched him go.

The flames closed in. The ceiling groaned. A beam fell ten feet to my left, sending sparks across the floor. The heat was unbearable now, my skin blistering, my lungs screaming for air that wasn't there.

I stopped pulling at the chains.

I stopped fighting.

I let go.

My vision blurred. The smoke thickened. I thought I heard something — a crash, distant, like thunder or a wall coming down — but I couldn't be sure. Everything was fading. The fire. The pain. The cold scar on my neck.

Then something massive hit the eastern wall.

The entire structure shook. Wood splintered. The wall didn't collapse — it exploded inward, burning planks scattering across the floor.

A wolf stood in the opening.

Black fur. Gold eyes that glowed in the firelight. Larger than any Alpha I had ever seen. Larger than Jonas. Larger than anything I thought was possible.

He crossed the room in three strides.

His jaws closed around the chain. I heard the metal scream. Silver should have burned him. I could see it searing his mouth, smoke rising from where his teeth met the links.

He didn't stop.

He tore through the chain like it was nothing. The shackles fell away. My wrists were still bleeding, the wolfsbane still burning through my veins, but the weight was gone.

I collapsed forward.

He shifted — not fully, just enough — and caught me before I hit the floor. Human hands. Lycan strength. His arms closed around me, lifting me like I weighed nothing.

"I've got you," he said.

His voice was low. Steady. Familiar in a way I couldn't place, like something I'd heard in a dream years ago and forgotten.

The ceiling groaned again. Louder this time. Final.

He turned and ran.

I felt the heat fall away. Felt the cool night air hit my face. Heard the outpost collapse behind us — wood and stone and ten years of my life crashing down into ash.

I tried to look at him. To see his face. To understand who had just pulled me out of my own funeral.

But my vision was already going dark.

The last thing I felt was his arms tightening around me.

The last thing I heard was his voice, quiet and certain, speaking to someone I couldn't see.

"Get Maren. Now."

Then nothing.
