Chapter 4

I woke to white.

Not the smoke-stained gray of the outpost ceiling. Not the familiar cream of my old room at Ironveil. Just white. Clean. Unfamiliar.

I blinked. The light was soft, filtered through curtains I didn't recognize. The scent in the air was wrong — cedar and something sharper, like mountain wind. Not Ironveil's pine and pack-musk. Not home.

I tried to sit up. My body didn't respond immediately. When it finally did, the movement sent a wave of pain through my wrists. I looked down. White bandages, clean and precise, wrapped from palm to mid-forearm. Underneath, I could feel the burn — deep, bone-level, the kind of silver damage that would scar.

I reached for my wolf.

Silence.

Not the faint stirring I'd known for years. Not the stunted, half-awake presence that had lived quietly in the back of my mind since I was sixteen. Nothing. A vast, cold void where something had been ripped out at the root.

The rejection.

I remembered it in pieces. Jonas's voice. The formal words. The mark on my neck cracking like ice. My wolf howling once — raw and broken — and then going silent.

I pressed my hand to my neck. The skin there was rough. Scarred. I didn't need a mirror to know what it looked like. The mate mark had died. What was left was evidence.

I sat there, hand against the scar, and waited for something to surface. Grief. Rage. Anything.

Nothing came.

Just the silence. And underneath it, the faint, animal awareness that I was alive when I shouldn't be.

The door opened.

I flinched. Hard. My body moved before my mind caught up — pulling back against the headboard, hands coming up in a defensive position I didn't remember learning.

The man in the doorway stopped immediately. He didn't step inside. Didn't speak. Just stood there, one hand still on the door handle, watching me with an expression I couldn't read.

He was tall. Broad-shouldered. Dark hair, gold eyes that caught the light in a way that felt wrong — too bright, too focused. Lycan, my brain supplied. Not werewolf. Something older.

I didn't recognize him.

"You're awake," he said.

His voice was low. Steady. The same voice I'd heard in the fire, right before I lost consciousness. I've got you.

I didn't answer. My throat was dry, and I didn't trust my voice yet.

He stayed in the doorway. "My name is Caelan Ashford. You're at the Silvercrest estate. You've been unconscious for six days."

Six days.

I processed that. Six days since the outpost. Six days since Jonas walked away. Six days since my wolf went silent.

"Why?" I managed. My voice came out rough, barely above a whisper.

Caelan's expression didn't change. "Why did I bring you here?"

I nodded.

"Because you were dying," he said simply. "And I wasn't going to let that happen."

Not an explanation. A statement of fact.

I looked at him. At the way he held himself in the doorway — not blocking it, not advancing, just present. At the careful distance he was maintaining. At the lock on the inside of the door, visible from where I sat.

"The lock works from the inside," Caelan said, following my gaze. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a key, and set it on the small table just inside the doorway. "This is yours. I won't come in without your permission."

He straightened. Took one step back into the hallway.

"Maren — the healer who's been treating you — will check on you in an hour. If you need anything before then, pull the cord by the bed. Someone will come."

He didn't wait for a response. He pulled the door closed behind him. I heard his footsteps retreat down the hallway. Even. Unhurried.

I stared at the key on the table.

Ten years at Ironveil, and I'd never had a lock on my door. Never needed one. The mate bond was supposed to be protection enough. The pack was supposed to be family.

I got out of bed slowly. My legs shook. I made it to the table, picked up the key, and turned it over in my hand. It was solid. Real. Not a gesture.

I locked the door from the inside.

Then I sat down on the floor with my back against the wall and waited for my hands to stop shaking.

They didn't.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my opposite wrist. The old habit. Press. Release. The thing I'd done for ten years whenever I needed to suppress something — emotion, reaction, my own voice.

There was nothing left to suppress.

I pressed anyway.

Press. Release. Press. Release.

The silence where my wolf should be was so vast I thought I might disappear into it.

I didn't.

I sat there, thumb against wrist, and breathed.

In. Out. In. Out.

The white ceiling above me didn't change. The cedar scent didn't fade. The scar on my neck stayed cold.

But I was still here.

I didn't know why that mattered yet.

But it did.
