Chapter 2

The outpost smelled like rot and old rain.

I stepped through the doorway and knew immediately that there was no parchment. No pen. No dignified exit.

Coraline stood in the center of the collapsed structure, flanked by two wolves I didn't recognize. Their scent was wrong — not Ironveil, not any pack I'd brokered treaties with. Hired muscle. The kind you brought when you needed something done that couldn't be traced back through pack loyalty.

She smiled. The same warm, sympathetic smile from the corridor.

"Thank you for coming, Lyla."

I didn't answer. My wolf stirred — not the faint, stunted thing I was used to, but something sharper. Louder. A warning that felt like claws scraping the inside of my ribs.

One of the wolves moved behind me. I heard the door close. Not slammed. Just pulled shut with the quiet finality of a lock sliding into place.

Coraline lifted her hand. Silver shackles dangled from her fingers, the metal laced with something dark and oily. The scent hit me before she moved — wolfsbane, concentrated enough to suppress a shift on contact.

"Hold her," Coraline said.

They were fast. I turned, but the wolf behind me was faster. His hand closed around my upper arm, yanking me backward. The second wolf grabbed my other wrist. I kicked, connected with something solid, heard a grunt — but then the shackles snapped shut.

Silver seared into my skin.

The pain was immediate and total. It burned through my wrists like acid, deeper than flesh, deeper than bone. The wolfsbane compound followed half a second later — a chemical suffocation that slammed into my wolf like a door closing. I felt her fight it. For the first time in years, I felt her fight with everything she had, clawing at the suppression, howling into the silence the wolfsbane was forcing down her throat.

Then she was gone.

The mind-link went dead. The bond on my neck went cold. I was alone inside my own head in a way I hadn't been since I was sixteen.

I dropped to my knees. The wolves released me. I didn't try to stand.

Coraline crouched in front of me, close enough that I could see the satisfaction in her eyes. She wasn't pretending anymore.

"I know what you took," she said quietly. "The archive files. The alliance contacts. You thought you were clever."

I didn't answer. My wrists were burning toward bone.

"But it doesn't matter." She reached into her jacket and pulled out a folded parchment. "Because you're going to sign this. And then you're going to disappear. Quietly. The way you should have from the start."

She unfolded the parchment and held it in front of me.

I read it. Every line. Every clause.

It wasn't a departure agreement. It was a full legal surrender. Territory rights. Resource claims. Any future challenge to Coraline's Luna status. Any claim to Jonas Evans as mate. A renunciation so complete that signing it would erase ten years of my existence from Ironveil's records.

Coraline placed a pen between my shackled fingers.

"Sign."

I looked at her. At the parchment. At the two wolves standing behind her, watching.

Then I looked at the silver burning through my wrists.

I signed.

Not because I believed the document was legal. Not because I was giving up. But because a parchment signed under duress, with silver shackles and wolfsbane suppression and witnesses who were paid to be here, wasn't a legal instrument.

It was evidence.

Coraline took the parchment, folded it carefully, and tucked it back into her jacket. She stood.

"Good," she said. "I'm glad you were reasonable."

She turned toward the door. The two wolves followed.

Then I smelled it.

Accelerant. Chemical and sharp, layered into the walls.

Coraline paused at the threshold. She didn't look back.

"Goodbye, Lyla."

She struck a match.

The flame caught the accelerant in the doorframe first. It spread fast — up the walls, across the ceiling, eating through the rotted wood like it had been waiting for this. The wolves stepped outside. The door closed.

I heard the lock slide into place from the other side.

The fire climbed.

I pulled against the chains. The silver bit deeper. My wrists were slick with blood now, the wolfsbane compound mixing with it, spreading the suppression further into my system. My wolf was silent. Completely silent. I couldn't feel her at all.

Smoke filled the room.

I coughed, tried to stand, couldn't. The chains were bolted to a support beam that hadn't collapsed yet. I pulled again. The beam held.

The flames reached the far wall. Heat rolled across the space in waves. My lungs burned.

I stopped pulling.

For ten years, I had suppressed everything. My wolf. My scent. My voice. I had pressed my thumb to my wrist and made myself small and told myself the bond was enough.

It wasn't.

I opened every door I had kept shut.

I stopped pressing. I stopped making myself small. I stopped suppressing.

My wolf surged.

Not the faint, stunted thing I was used to. Something else. Something vast and furious and alive in a way I had never felt before. She slammed against the wolfsbane barrier with a force that made my vision white out. The suppression held. The chains held.

But she didn't stop.

The smoke thickened. The flames closed in.

Then the door opened.

Not from the inside. From the outside. The lock didn't slide — it shattered. The door came off its hinges entirely, crashing inward in a spray of burning wood.

A wolf stood in the opening.

Massive. Larger than any Alpha I had ever seen. Black fur, gold eyes that glowed in the firelight.

He didn't hesitate.

He crossed the burning room in three strides, jaws closing around the chain. Silver should have burned him. It didn't. He tore through the metal like it was paper.

The shackles fell away.

I collapsed forward. He shifted — not fully, just enough — and caught me before I hit the floor. Human hands. Lycan strength.

"I've got you," he said.

His voice was low. Steady. Familiar in a way I couldn't place.

The ceiling groaned. He lifted me, turned, and ran.

The outpost collapsed behind us.

I didn't see it fall. I was already unconscious.
