Chapter 4

The lobby of Grant Industries was all marble and morning light. I stepped out of the elevator at eight-fifteen, my assistant half a step behind me, already running through the day's schedule. Board meeting at nine. Lunch with the CFO at noon. A call with Tokyo at three.

Then I saw him.

Roman was on his knees in the middle of the floor.

I stopped. My assistant stopped. Around us, employees froze mid-step. Security by the doors shifted forward, uncertain.

He had a piece of paper in his hand. Folded. Official-looking. His surgical scrubs were gone. He wore jeans and a wrinkled button-down. His hair needed cutting. He looked smaller than I remembered.

"Oaklynn," he said. His voice carried across the lobby. Loud enough that the receptionist looked up. Loud enough that someone by the elevators pulled out their phone. "Please. Just listen."

I didn't move.

He held up the paper. "It's a marriage certificate. Blank. I brought it because—because I want you to know I'm serious. I was afraid before. Afraid of what we had. Afraid of how much I needed you." His voice cracked. "I made a mistake. The worst mistake of my life."

Someone behind me whispered something. I heard the word *Vasquez*. Heard someone else say *isn't that the surgeon*.

Roman's eyes were red. "You know what we built together. Three years, Oaklynn. You can't just erase that. You can't just—" He stopped. Swallowed. "I'm begging you. Let me fix this. Let me prove I can be the man you needed."

I looked at him. At the man I'd loved. The man I'd funded. The man who'd called me a gold digger in front of a hospital full of witnesses.

I thought about my grandmother's bracelet on Nataly Rice's wrist. I thought about the spilled soup and the scalded skin and the way he'd put his hand on Nataly's back like she was the only person in the room.

I thought about the eviction notice. The canceled credit cards. The $5 million research grant that disappeared overnight.

I took three steps forward. Stopped in front of him. Close enough to see the stubble on his jaw. Close enough to smell the coffee on his breath.

"You're three years too late," I said quietly, "and a lifetime too short."

His face went white.

I turned. Walked back to the elevator. My assistant followed without a word. The doors slid open. I stepped inside. Pressed the button for the fortieth floor.

The last thing I saw before the doors closed was Roman still on his knees, the marriage certificate crumpled in his fist, security moving toward him.

I didn't look back.

Serena was waiting at the restaurant when I arrived that evening. A quiet place in the West Village. White tablecloths. Low lighting. The kind of spot where no one bothered you.

She stood when she saw me. Pulled me into a hug that lasted three seconds longer than usual. Then she sat back down and poured me a glass of wine without asking.

"I heard about the lobby," she said.

I took a sip. "News travels fast."

"You have two hundred employees. Half of them were recording." She leaned back in her chair. "How are you?"

"Fine."

She gave me a look. The one that said *try again*.

I set down my glass. "I'm angry. I'm exhausted. And I'm not done."

"Good," Serena said. She opened her menu, glanced at it, closed it again. "Tell me everything. From the beginning."

So I did.

I told her about the hospital. The soup. The bracelet. Nataly's smile. Roman's choice. The doctor who'd handed me a napkin. I told her about the eviction. The grant withdrawal. The PI report. The pharmaceutical fraud. The three hundred forty-seven thousand dollars Nataly had skimmed. Roman's name in the emails.

I told her about the lobby proposal. The marriage certificate. The way he'd looked at me like I owed him something.

Serena listened without interrupting. When I finished, she was quiet for a long moment. Then she closed her menu and set it aside.

"Tell me what you want to happen," she said, "and I'll build the legal architecture for it."

I looked at her. My best friend. The only person who'd known the truth all along. The only person who'd never once asked me why I'd hidden who I was.

"The Met Gala," I said. "Six weeks. Nataly will be there. She'll wear the bracelet. I want to take it back in front of everyone who matters."

Serena nodded. Pulled out her phone. Started typing. "Public reclamation. We'll need witnesses. Documentation of ownership. Photographs of the engraving. I'll have our estate attorney pull your grandmother's will and the transfer paperwork."

"Then Mount Sinai," I continued. "I want the board to see the fraud report. I want Nataly and Roman terminated. Publicly."

"Board presentation," Serena said, still typing. "I'll coordinate with the hospital's legal department. We'll need the PI's full file. Bank records. Emails. Everything admissible."

I leaned forward. "And I want a backup plan. Something held in reserve. In case they try to spin this. In case they try to make me the villain."

Serena looked up. Her eyes were sharp. "Evidence release. Timed. Controlled. We'll prepare a media packet. Bank statements. Property records. Surveillance footage if we can get it. We release it the moment they try to fight back."

She set down her phone. "This is going to be nuclear, Oaklynn."

"Good," I said.

She smiled. "When do we start?"

"Tonight."

We ordered food we barely touched. Spent two hours mapping every move. Every contingency. Every possible counter-attack.

By the time we left the restaurant, the plan was airtight.

I walked home through the cold March air. Touched my bare wrist. Felt the absence where my grandmother's bracelet used to sit.

Six weeks until the Met Gala.

Six weeks until Nataly Rice walked into a room full of Manhattan's elite wearing something that was never hers.

Six weeks until I took it back.

I pulled my coat tighter and kept walking.
