Chapter 5

Hugo Russell filed the incident report on a Wednesday morning.

He sat in the small windowless office the hospital gave to attending physicians for paperwork and typed every detail he remembered. The time. The corridor. Nataly Rice's deliberate shoulder collision. The thermal bag hitting the floor. The hot soup splashing across Oaklynn's wrist. The red welt rising on her skin.

Nataly's exact words: *You should really call ahead before playing housewife for someone else's man.*

The bracelet on Nataly's wrist. The way she'd twisted it so the engraving caught the light.

Roman Vasquez's arrival. His choice. His words: *Gold diggers don't get to make scenes in my hospital.*

Hugo read it twice. Attached the patient advocate's contact information he'd given Oaklynn. Routed it to Dr. Patricia Holt, Chief of Surgery. Hit send.

Then he went back to rounds.

Three days later, Holt's response arrived. Brief. Professional. Cold.

*Dr. Russell — Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. The incident is under review. We appreciate your concern for patient welfare.*

Hugo stared at the email. Under review. The hospital's favorite phrase for making things disappear.

He printed the original report. Filed it in his personal records. And kept working.

---

The dinner invitation came by text.

*Oaklynn — Your father and I would like to see you. Dinner this Friday at seven? — Mom*

I read it twice. Knew exactly what it meant. They'd heard. Of course they'd heard. Manhattan society was a small, vicious circle.

I typed back: *I'll be there.*

Friday evening, I drove to the Upper East Side townhouse where I'd grown up. The same limestone facade. The same wrought-iron gate. The same front door I'd walked through a thousand times.

My mother answered. She wore pearls and a careful smile. "Darling." She kissed my cheek. "Come in. Your father's in the study."

I followed her through the foyer. Past the portraits. Past the antique console table where my grandmother's photo still sat in its silver frame.

My father stood when I entered the study. Tall. Gray at the temples. The same measured expression he wore in board meetings.

"Oaklynn." He gestured to the chair across from his desk. "Sit."

I sat.

He folded his hands. "Your mother and I have been hearing things. About you and Roman."

I said nothing.

"We understand relationships go through difficult periods," my mother said from the doorway. Her voice was soft. Conciliatory. "But we wanted to check in. See if there's anything we can do to help."

"It's over," I said.

My father's expression didn't change. "Over as in you're taking space? Or over as in—"

"Over," I repeated.

A pause. My mother came into the room. Sat in the chair beside mine. "Oaklynn, Roman is a good man. A brilliant surgeon. Your father and I both thought—"

"It's over," I said again.

My father leaned back. "Can you tell us what happened?"

I looked at him. At the man who'd built an empire through strategy and control. Who'd taught me to read balance sheets before I learned algebra. Who'd never once asked me if I was happy.

"No," I said.

Silence filled the study.

My mother reached for my hand. "Darling, if this is about something that can be fixed—"

I pulled my hand back. Stood. "Thank you for dinner. I need to go."

My father stood too. "Oaklynn—"

"I'll call you next week," I said.

I walked out before either of them could follow.

In the car, I sat with the engine running. Touched the Cartier bracelet on my wrist. The one I'd retrieved from my safe that morning. The one my grandmother had fastened there the summer before she died.

I drove back to Tribeca without the radio on.

---

Nataly's Instagram post went live on Tuesday.

My assistant flagged it within minutes. Forwarded the screenshot to my phone.

The photo was artful. Nataly's wrist resting on white linen. A cocktail glass just visible at the edge of the frame. The Cartier bracelet centered. The Grant family crest catching the light.

Caption: *when your future husband has taste ✨*

She'd tagged the jeweler. As if the bracelet were new. As if Roman had bought it for her.

Twelve thousand likes in six hours.

I stared at the photo. At my grandmother's bracelet. At the engraving that said *Grant* in script so fine you had to look close to see it.

I forwarded the screenshot to Serena. Typed one word.

*Perfect.*

Her reply came back in seconds.

*She just handed us everything we need.*

I set the phone down. Looked at the calendar on my desk.

Three days until the Met Gala.

Three days until Nataly Rice walked into a room full of Manhattan's elite wearing my grandmother's legacy like a trophy.

Three days until I took it back.

---

Serena arrived at my penthouse at four p.m. on the day of the Gala.

She carried a leather portfolio. Set it on the dining table. Opened it without preamble.

"The full dossier," she said. "PI report. Pharmaceutical kickback documentation. Bank records showing Nataly's account. Emails with Roman's name in the approval chain. Everything formatted for the Mount Sinai board."

I flipped through the pages. Three hundred forty-seven in total. Every transaction documented. Every email timestamped. Every piece of evidence indexed and cross-referenced.

"The bracelet ownership documentation is in the back," Serena continued. "Your grandmother's will. The transfer paperwork. Photos of the engraving. Cartier's authentication records."

I closed the folder.

"The media packet is ready too," she said. "Bank statements showing every dollar you spent on Roman. Property deeds. Credit card records. We release it the moment they try to spin this."

I looked at her. "You're sure it's airtight?"

"I'm sure."

I stood. Walked to my closet. Pulled out the gown I'd chosen weeks ago. Ivory duchess satin. Simple lines. No embellishment.

I dressed slowly. Let my hair fall loose. Put on no jewelry except the Cartier bracelet.

Serena watched from the doorway. "You look like Eleanor."

I turned. Met her eyes in the mirror.

"Good," I said.

The car arrived at six. Serena handed me the portfolio at the door. I held it against my side. Felt its weight.

"Ready?" she asked.

I touched the bracelet on my wrist. Felt the engraving under my fingertips.

"Let's go," I said.

"Her blood type is a match. It’s the only option." I froze outside the conference room door, the quarterly reports digging into my ribs. I knew that voice. If Ava is the match, then Ava is the solution." For the past month, Ethan had been obsessed with my health, insisting on daily "vitamins" and endless checkups. He called it love. Standing in that hallway, I realized he was actually shopping for spare parts. "She is your wife, Ethan," Ben argued weakly. "You can't just harvest her like a crop." "She became my wife because she was useful," Ethan replied, his indifference cutting deeper than any scalpel. "Now, she can be useful for this."
