Chapter 3

Nataly wore the bracelet to the pediatric wing fundraiser on a Thursday night. I wasn't there. But Serena was.

She called me at ten-thirty, voice tight. "You need to hear this."

I put her on speaker and kept working. Grant Industries quarterly reports spread across my desk. Numbers that made sense. Numbers I controlled.

"Nataly Rice," Serena said, "just spent twenty minutes at the open bar telling anyone who'd listen about her 'brilliant surgeon fiancé' and his 'pathetic ex who thought homemade dinners made her special.'"

I stopped writing.

"She was wearing it," Serena continued. "Your grandmother's bracelet. Showing it off like a trophy. Turning her wrist so the light caught it. I watched her tell Margaret Chen—you know Margaret, she chairs the hospital board—that Roman gave it to her as a promise."

My pen pressed hard enough to tear the page.

"Margaret asked if it was vintage Cartier," Serena said. "Nataly said yes. Said Roman has 'exquisite taste.'"

I closed my eyes. Saw my grandmother's hands. Saw her fasten that bracelet on my wrist the summer before she died. Heard her voice. *You carry something real, darling. Don't ever forget that.*

"Oaklynn?" Serena's voice pulled me back.

"I'm here."

"What do you want me to do?"

I looked at the calendar on my wall. Six weeks to the Met Gala. Six weeks until every person who mattered in Manhattan would be in one room.

"Nothing," I said. "Let her wear it."

Serena was quiet for three seconds. Then: "You have a plan."

"I have a plan."

"Good," she said. And hung up.

I went back to my reports. But my hand kept drifting to my bare wrist.

---

The envelope arrived on a Monday.

Plain manila. No return address. My private investigator's signature in the corner—just his initials, small and neat.

I opened it at my desk. Pulled out the file.

Three hundred forty-seven pages.

I read every one.

Pharmaceutical supplier contracts with Nataly Rice's signature. Invoices that didn't match delivery logs. Payments to a consulting company that didn't exist. A paper trail leading to a business account at a bank in Newark. Nataly's name on the account. Deposits every month for three years.

Three hundred forty thousand dollars.

I kept reading.

Two emails. Internal Mount Sinai correspondence. Subject line: *Discrepancy in Q3 pharmaceutical expenditures.* Roman's name in the CC line. A follow-up email asking if he'd reviewed the flagged contracts. His response, one line: *Looks fine to me. Approve.*

He knew.

He'd known the whole time.

I set the file down. Looked out the window at the city. At the buildings stretching toward the sky. At the people moving below like ants, everyone carrying their own small disasters.

I pulled out my leather notebook. Opened to a blank page. Wrote one date in careful block letters.

*Met Gala. May 6.*

Then I closed the file. Locked it in my office safe. The heavy door clicked shut.

I touched my wrist again. Still empty.

Six weeks.

---

Roman tried to see me that weekend.

He showed up at Grant Industries on Saturday morning. Security called up. Said Mr. Vasquez was in the lobby asking to speak with me.

I almost laughed.

"Tell him I'm not available," I said.

"He says it's important."

"Tell him I'm not available," I repeated. "And if he comes back, have him escorted out."

A pause. "Understood, Ms. Grant."

I watched from my office window. Saw him leave the building. Saw him stand on the sidewalk looking up. His phone in his hand. Probably calling me. Probably leaving another voicemail I'd never listen to.

He stood there for five minutes. Then he got in a cab and left.

I went back to work.

---

Nataly posted a photo on Instagram that night.

Serena sent me the screenshot. Nataly at some rooftop bar in Tribeca. Cocktail in one hand. The other hand resting on the table, wrist turned just so. The bracelet catching the light. The Grant family crest visible if you looked close enough.

Caption: *Good things come to those who know their worth. 💎*

Forty-three likes in an hour. Comments from nurses I recognized. *Gorgeous!* *You deserve it!* *Lucky girl!*

I stared at the photo for a long time.

Then I opened my safe. Pulled out the investigator's file. Flipped to the page with the bank account summary. Three hundred forty-seven thousand dollars. Skimmed from hospital funds. Stolen while she smiled at patients and acted like she cared.

I took a photo of the page. Saved it to a locked folder on my phone.

Then I opened my calendar. Counted the days.

Forty days until the Met Gala.

Forty days until Nataly Rice walked into a room full of Manhattan's elite wearing my grandmother's bracelet.

Forty days until I turned that bracelet over and showed everyone exactly what she'd stolen.

I closed the file. Put it back in the safe.

Touched my bare wrist one more time.

And smiled.

"Her blood type is a match. It’s the only option." I froze outside the conference room door, the quarterly reports digging into my ribs. I knew that voice. It was Ben, my husband’s best friend and doctor. But the next voice, cold and devoid of warmth, shattered my world. "Then we do it," my husband Ethan said. "Chloe cannot wait any longer. If Ava is the match, then Ava is the solution." For the past month, Ethan had been obsessed with my health, insisting on daily "vitamins" and endless checkups. He called it love. Standing in that hallway, I realized he was actually shopping for spare parts. "She is your wife, Ethan," Ben argued weakly. "You can't just harvest her like a crop." "She became my wife because she was useful," Ethan replied, his indifference cutting deeper than any scalpel. "Now, she can be useful for this." The realization hit me with the force of a physical blow. The nausea I’d been feeling wasn't stress. I was pregnant. And those "vitamins" he fed me every morning? They weren't supplements. I didn't burst into the room. I didn't scream. I walked away in silence, my hand hovering over my stomach. He wanted my kidney? He wanted to carve me up? I decided right then. I wouldn't just leave. I would terminate the pregnancy, fake my death, and burn his entire world to the ground.
