Chapter 3

The heavy door to my recovery room swung inward, scraping against the linoleum floor. I tightened my grip on the edge of the mattress. Last night, ER security had physically shoved Colin out of the maternity ward while doctors fought to stabilize my baby's plummeting heart rate. I fully expected my husband to force his way back in today.

Instead, Ava stepped into the room.

She wore a fitted gray sweater and designer jeans, a stark contrast to the sterile hospital gowns surrounding us. She held a steaming paper cup in both hands, stopping right at the foot of my bed.

"You look terrible," she said, keeping her voice barely above a whisper.

"Get out." I stared flatly at her.

Ava took a step closer, tracing the rim of her cup. "Colin spent the entire night at my apartment. I was shaking so badly from the fire alarm, he refused to leave my side." A cruel smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. "He made me chamomile tea. He rubbed my shoulders. Do you know what he didn't do?"

I did not answer.

A month ago, those words would have drawn tears. Today, my chest felt entirely hollow.

Ava blinked, clearly thrown off by my flat response. She expected screaming. She expected tears.

"He is leaving you," she insisted, her voice rising in pitch. "He told me he only married you because you offered to pay for his surgical residency. Now that he's an attending, he doesn't need a boring accountant tying him down."

"If he doesn't need me, why didn't he pay for his own car?" I asked, tilting my head. "Or his own suits? Or the down payment on the house you probably sleep in?"

Ava's grip on the styrofoam cup tightened. "You can't buy love."

I slid my right hand under the pillow. My fingers found the cold metal edge of my phone. I tapped the screen, swiped to the voice memo app, and hit the red circle.

"Say that again," I challenged, keeping my tone perfectly even.

Ava scoffed, oblivious to the device hidden beneath the cotton case. "Are you deaf? Your husband does not care about you. He loves me. He told me you were nothing but a bank account to him."

Ava’s smug expression vanished. The color drained from her cheeks.

"What are you doing?" she snapped, lunging forward.

My left hand slammed down on the red nurse call button pinned to my mattress.

"Security," I yelled toward the intercom on the wall. "There is an unauthorized person in room 412 threatening a patient."

"You crazy bitch," Ava hissed, stumbling backward. She knocked her own cup against the bedrail, spilling hot water over her knuckles.

"Leave," I ordered. "Before I show this recording to the medical ethics committee."

Footsteps pounded down the hallway outside. Ava shot a panicked glare at the doorway, spun on her heel, and sprinted out of the room just as two nurses rushed past her.

The nurses checked my vitals, confirmed the baby's heart rate remained steady, and left to file an incident report.

Adam stepped inside. He wore a crisp navy suit today, holding a thick manila folder in his left hand. His sharp gaze immediately dropped to the puddle of spilled water on the floor, then shifted to the hallway.

"Was that Dr. Ava rushing toward the elevator?" Adam asked, closing the door firmly behind him.

"She came to deliver a message from Colin," I said, setting my phone on the tray table.

Adam frowned, his jaw muscles clenching. "This is a restricted maternity floor. She has zero clinical reason to be in this wing. That is a direct violation of patient privacy protocols."

"Add it to the list," I muttered, leaning back against the pillows. "Did you find anything?"

Adam walked over and pulled a chair closer to the bed. "How is the pain today?"

"Manageable," I lied. My pelvis ached with every breath. "Show me what you brought."

He placed the folder on my lap. "I pulled the theater security footage from last night. I also bypassed Colin's department head and went straight to Human Resources for the official surgical logs."

I flipped the folder open. Inside sat a stack of printed schedules, timecards, and a glossy photograph pulled from a surveillance camera. The photo showed Colin and Ava buying popcorn at the concession stand, his arm wrapped tightly around her waist.

"He claimed he was in an emergency bowel resection," I said, staring at the timestamp on the photo.

"He lied," Adam replied, his voice dropping an octave. "The OR logs show Colin has not scrubbed into a surgery after six in the evening for the past three months. He has been systematically altering his personal on-call calendar to match Ava's shifts."

"He logged seventy-two hours of emergency on-call time this month," I noted, scanning the spreadsheet on the second page.

"The hospital paid him overtime for every single one of those hours," Adam stated, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "Time he spent at restaurants, movie theaters, and hotels with a first-year resident."

"That is time theft," my accounting background kicking in immediately.

"It is fraud," Adam corrected. "Federal fraud, considering some of those phantom hours were billed to state insurance programs."

I traced the hospital's official blue seal stamped at the bottom of the printed schedule. Fifty thousand dollars. Three years of working double shifts at the firm. I had sacrificed my twenties to build a career for a man who used my money to finance his affair.

"Why are you doing this?" I asked, narrowing my eyes at him. "You are the Chief of Surgery. Colin is your star doctor. Exposing him brings a massive scandal to your department."

Adam’s expression hardened. "I do not tolerate liars in my operating rooms. If a man will lie about where he is during a critical on-call shift, he will lie about a surgical error. He is a liability."

He paused, his dark eyes locking onto mine. "And no one deserves to be abandoned on a theater floor while going into premature labor."

"This is official documentation," I pointed out, tapping the hospital seal. "Will this get him suspended?"

"If presented to the ethics board, yes," Adam confirmed. "He will face immediate suspension pending a full investigation. His attending privileges will be revoked by noon."

I closed the folder. The cardboard edge dug into my palms. I did not want to just hand this over to a faceless HR representative. I wanted Colin to look at me when his career crumbled.

"I want to hand-deliver this file," I told him, meeting his intense gaze. "I want to put it directly into the hands of the medical affairs office."

Adam studied my face for a long second. He didn't offer empty pity. He didn't tell me to calm down or focus on the baby.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a solid brass keycard, dropping it directly onto the manila folder.

"Next Monday morning is the general staff meeting," Adam said. "I will arrange it."
