Chapter 4

Three days after my hospital discharge, I stood in the lobby of the long-term rental apartment across from the medical center, staring at twenty-four missed calls on my phone screen. I did not go back to the house I bought for Colin. I had packed two suitcases while he was busy covering his tracks and signed a six-month lease here.

"You are acting like a child."

The voice cut through the low hum of the lobby's vending machine.

I turned. Colin stepped out from behind a large potted fern, blocking the automatic sliding doors to the street. He wore his navy scrubs, a silver stethoscope shoved haphazardly into his side pocket. Dark circles framed his eyes, but his posture remained rigid and demanding.

Before I could step back, his fingers wrapped around my right wrist. His grip was tight, digging sharply into my skin.

"Let go of me," I demanded, keeping my voice steady.

"Not until you stop this tantrum," Colin hissed, glancing over his shoulder at the empty reception desk. "You changed the alarm code on the house. You blocked my number. Do you have any idea how bad this looks? The Chief of Surgery has been watching me like a hawk all week."

"He should be," I said, pulling my arm back.

Colin tightened his hold, his fingers bruising my forearm. "We have been married for three years. We have a baby coming in two months. Are you really going to throw our entire family away because of a misunderstanding at a movie theater?"

"A misunderstanding?" I scoffed, glaring at the hand trapping my wrist. "You abandoned me during premature labor to escort your mistress out of a fire alarm."

"Ava has severe anxiety!" Colin argued, leaning closer. The smell of hospital antiseptic and stale coffee clung to his clothes. "I told you to take the stairs. You made it out fine. The baby is fine. You are letting pregnancy hormones warp your sense of reality."

"Pregnancy hormones did not leave a pink lip gloss smudge on your collar."

"Stop blowing this out of proportion and come home," he ordered, ignoring my accusation entirely. "People are starting to talk at the hospital. I need you back at the house tonight to maintain appearances."

I yanked my wrist upward with all my strength, breaking his hold. My pulse pounded in my ears, but my hands remained perfectly steady.

I unzipped my leather tote bag. My fingers found the folded stack of papers Adam had given me. I pulled out the top sheet—a photocopy of Colin's forged surgical logs—and slapped it directly against his chest.

The paper crinkled loudly before fluttering to the polished tile floor.

Colin looked down. His eyes tracked the highlighted rows of phantom on-call hours and the hospital's official blue seal stamped at the bottom.

All color drained from his face. His mouth opened slightly, but no sound came out.

Colin stared at the paper for a long five seconds. He blinked twice. Then, his shoulders relaxed. The shock vanished, replaced by a cold, arrogant smirk. He kicked the paper aside with the toe of his leather loafer.

"You think a printed spreadsheet scares me?" he asked, crossing his arms over his chest. "Who gave you that? Someone in HR? They will never fire me. I bring in too much revenue for the surgical department."

"It is federal fraud, Colin."

"It is a clerical error," he corrected smoothly, his tone condescending. "My resident handles my schedule. Ava made a mistake inputting the billing codes. That is all. You do not understand how hospital administration works."

He took a step toward me, towering over my pregnant frame, trying to use his height to intimidate me. "I will absolutely not sign any divorce papers. You have zero leverage here."

"I have the truth."

Colin laughed, a harsh, grating sound that echoed off the lobby walls. "The truth does not pay the bills. Your fifty-thousand-dollar savings account dried up three years ago paying for my residency. You have nothing left."

He took another step, backing me toward the elevator bank.

"Without my medical insurance, you cannot even afford this week's prenatal checkup," he sneered, pointing at my swollen stomach. "Do you know how much a neonatal intensive care unit costs? Ten thousand dollars a day. You need me."

"I need you?" I repeated, my voice dropping to a whisper.

I did not yell. I did not cry. I looked at the man I had sacrificed my twenties for, observing the absolute certainty in his eyes. He genuinely believed he owned me. He believed I was trapped by the very career I had bought for him.

I reached into my tote bag a second time.

I pulled out a single sheet of heavy cardstock, stamped at the top with the legal department's bright red seal.

"Read it," I said, shoving the document into his hands.

Colin unfolded the paper slowly, a mocking smile still playing on his lips. His eyes scanned the first paragraph.

The sneer froze.

His jaw dropped. His gaze darted back to the red seal at the top, then down to the bolded signature line at the bottom.

"What is this?" he demanded, his voice cracking.

"A emergency financial restraining order," I answered, crossing my arms exactly as he had done moments ago. "Officially submitted to the family court and approved at eight o'clock this morning. Your medical insurance no longer covers me. And more importantly, my financial assets are legally severed from yours pending an investigation."

Colin gripped the edges of the cardstock so hard his knuckles turned white. The paper began to tear under his thumbs. "You canceled your own insurance? Are you insane?"

Real panic finally fractured his composed facade. The veins in his neck bulged. He realized the control he thought he had was entirely an illusion.

"You cannot do this," Colin shouted, completely abandoning his quiet, commanding tone. He crumpled the legal document in his fist, shaking it at me. "You cannot freeze the assets without a formal hearing! The state requires mediation!"

"The hearing is next Tuesday," I said, watching the digital numbers above the elevator tick downward.

Colin lunged forward, slamming his hand flat against the metal elevator doors just as they began to slide open. The impact echoed like a gunshot through the small space, startling an elderly woman walking her dog outside the glass doors.

He blocked my path, his face inches from mine, his eyes wide and unblinking.

"If you dare show up at that hearing next week," Colin snarled, his voice vibrating with pure malice, "I will leave you with nothing. I will take the house, I will take the accounts, and I will take the baby."

He reached into his scrub pocket, pulled out a thick, folded white envelope, and shoved it roughly into the pocket of my maternity coat.

"My lawyers filed for full custody an hour ago," he said.
