Chapter 2

"Adam," I gasped into the phone as the theater emptied around me. "I am outside."

"Stay where you are. I am pulling up now."

A black SUV jumped the curb lane and stopped beneath the flashing marquee. Dr. Adam Hayes climbed out before the engine settled. He was still wearing the charcoal suit from the hospital foundation dinner, his tie loosened and his expression severe.

He crossed the pavement, caught me beneath both arms, and steadied my weight.

"How far apart?"

"Three minutes. Maybe less."

His gaze dropped to the wet fabric near my knees. "Your water may have broken. Get in."

He helped me across the back seat, reclined it, and fastened the belt low beneath my abdomen. Then he called the maternity triage desk through the car system.

"Seven-month pregnancy, regular contractions, possible membrane rupture, recent fall, five minutes out," he said. "Prepare obstetrics and neonatal support."

The SUV accelerated into traffic.

I curled around another contraction. "Colin left with Ava."

Adam's hands tightened on the steering wheel. "Did he know you were in labor?"

"I told him. He said she was afraid of crowds."

"Breathe. We deal with him after the baby is safe."

At the hospital entrance, a team waited with a stretcher. Adam moved beside me as nurses rushed us through triage, answering questions when pain stole my voice.

"Husband and medical proxy?" a nurse asked.

"Her husband is unavailable," Adam said. "I am Chief of Surgery. Contact her designated emergency person and obstetrics."

My chart still listed Colin as the person authorized to make decisions if I became unconscious. The thought made panic spike harder than the monitors.

"No," I said. "Not Colin."

The admitting nurse leaned close. "Do you want to revoke his proxy authority?"

"Yes. Immediately."

She placed a tablet in my shaking hand. I signed the temporary revocation and named Adam only until my mother could arrive.

"I accept," he said, then looked directly at me. "But you remain in control as long as you can speak."

The ultrasound showed a shortened cervix and fetal distress, but no placental rupture. The obstetrician ordered medication to slow labor, steroids for the baby's lungs, and continuous monitoring.

"The next hour matters," Dr. Lewis explained. "We are going to try to stop the contractions. If the heart rate worsens, we deliver."

I nodded, gripping the bedrail.

A nurse opened the curtain. Colin stormed into the bay wearing the same jacket from the theater. Pink lipstick still marked his collar.

"What is going on?" he demanded. "Why was I told my wife changed her medical proxy?"

Adam stepped between him and the bed. "Because she requested it."

"You had no right to bring her here without me."

"She was contracting every three minutes in a parking lot. You were not there."

Colin looked at the monitor, then at my face. "Rachel, this is stress-induced. You overreacted at the theater and triggered false labor."

"False labor does not require steroids," Dr. Lewis said without looking up. "And she has signs of preterm membrane leakage."

He ignored her. "Change the proxy back. Adam has a conflict of interest."

"My conflict is that you abandoned a patient who happens to be your wife," Adam replied.

Colin lowered his voice. "Do not make this a departmental issue."

"You made it one when you claimed to be on call."

The monitor alarm sharpened. My son's heart rate dropped, recovered, then dropped again.

"Everyone out except the patient's proxy," Dr. Lewis ordered.

Colin stepped toward the bed. "I am her husband."

"Not her proxy," the nurse said.

Security arrived and escorted him into the corridor. He argued the entire way, threatening complaints and demanding that Adam be removed from the case.

Ava appeared beyond the glass, pale and wrapped in Colin's coat. She did not come inside. She watched him choose his reputation over the monitor sounding beside my bed.

The medication finally slowed the contractions. The baby's heart rate stabilized after midnight.

Dr. Lewis exhaled. "We bought time. You will remain admitted for observation."

Relief left me shaking.

Adam pulled a chair beside the bed but kept a professional distance. "Your mother is on the first flight tomorrow. Until then, I will remain available."

"You should go home."

"I will leave when the obstetric team says you are stable."

I studied him. We had met through Colin years earlier, when Adam supervised his residency. He had always been formal, almost intimidating. Yet he had crossed the city without asking whether helping me would be convenient.

"Why did you answer?" I asked.

"Because you called."

The simplicity of it broke something open in me. Colin had spent years teaching me that every need required negotiation. Adam treated danger as sufficient reason to act.

Before dawn, a social worker documented the theater abandonment, Colin's attempt to override my decisions, and the fact that he had falsely claimed to be on call. She explained that the report would remain separate from the divorce case unless I chose to release it, but the hospital's patient-safety office would receive the professional concerns automatically. For once, the system Colin relied on was creating a record he could not charm away.

A neonatal specialist also came to my bedside and outlined what would happen if labor resumed: transport, respiratory support, and the decisions I would face. Adam listened without interrupting, then repeated the options in plain language after the doctor left. He never decided for me. He made sure I could decide for myself.

Near dawn, hospital counsel delivered the completed proxy revocation and a temporary no-contact order for the maternity floor. Colin could receive medical updates only with my written consent.

I signed both.

Through the window, I saw him at the nurses' station arguing into his phone while Ava stood several feet away. He never looked toward my room.

I rested my palm over the slow movement beneath my ribs.

The baby was still inside me. Still fighting.

And for the first time since I saw Colin kiss Ava, I understood that protecting my son would require more than leaving my husband. I would have to take away every system he used to control us.
