Chapter 3

"To Bob Miller, a visionary who turned our harbor initiative into a beacon of community hope!"

Applause rippled across the ballroom. Crystal chandeliers cast sharp white light over three hundred donors in tuxedos and evening gowns.

Bob stood near the podium, raising his glass with practiced modesty. Beside him stood Emily, radiant in an emerald silk dress, resting her fingers lightly on his forearm.

"Look at them," Mrs. Gable murmured beside me, clasping her hands together. "Bob gives so much to this city, and Emily has been such an angel coordinating the relief supplies. A true partnership."

"An angel," I repeated, swirling the sparkling water in my glass.

Three months. Ninety straight days of arguing with union reps, untangling supply chain gridlocks at two in the morning, and rewriting city contracts so Bob wouldn't face a civil suit over faulty concrete. Bob had signed his name on the final line, and Emily had picked out the floral centerpieces.

Now, they were the golden couple of the evening.

Bob’s gaze found mine across the room. He didn't smile. His eyes held a flicker of warning before he turned back to laugh at an alderman's joke.

The rustle of silk sounded at my elbow.

Emily approached, holding two flutes of champagne. A soft, contrite pout rested on her painted lips, loud enough to catch the attention of the city council members standing nearby.

"Tracy," Emily began, her voice quivering with theatrical sorrow. "I know things have been difficult between us. But seeing Bob achieve all this tonight... I just need to say it."

I kept my hands at my sides. "Say what, Emily?"

Several heads turned toward us. The chatter nearby thinned.

"Thank you for having the grace to forgive me," Emily said, tears glistening in her wide eyes. She reached forward, grasping my fingers with both of hers. "I made a terrible mistake. I carry that shame every single day. But I swear, Tracy, I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you and Bob."

"Let go of my hand," I said quietly.

"Please don't shut me out," Emily pleaded, stepping closer. Her body blocked the sightlines of the guests behind her. "We built this firm together. All three of us."

With a sudden, clumsy stagger, Emily stumbled into me. Her champagne glass tilted, splashing cold liquid across my wrist.

"Oh! I'm so clumsy!" she gasped, grabbing my beaded clutch from beneath my arm to steady herself.

"Back off," I snapped, yanking my bag away from her grip.

"I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!" Emily stepped back, clutching her chest, looking terrified and fragile.

Before I could walk away, a sharp voice cut through the ballroom.

"Wait a second. What is that?"

Councilman Barnes was staring directly at my open clutch. A folded sheaf of blue-tinted paper stuck out from the zipper, stamped with red ink across the top margin.

Bob pushed through the circle of onlookers, his brow furrowed. "What's going on here?"

"Bob, look," Emily pointed with a shaking finger, her lower lip trembling. "Isn't that... isn't that the confidential harbor bid? The sealed competitor analysis for tomorrow's closed session?"

Silence swallowed the room.

Bob snatched the folder from my bag. His eyes skimmed the red stamp, and his face instantly hardened into a mask of pure fury.

"Where did you get this?" Bob demanded.

"I didn't put that in there," I said, my chest tightening. "Emily just touched my bag."

"Are you accusing me?" Emily cried out, shrinking behind Bob's shoulder. "I don't even have access to the vault! Tracy, how could you? That document was leaked to the press twenty minutes ago—the city auditor just sent an emergency alert to the board!"

The surrounding board members began whispering in heated, alarmed bursts.

"Tracy had full administrative clearance," someone muttered.

"She ran the paperwork last month."

I stared at Bob, my voice steady despite the hammer of my pulse. "Bob. Look at me. You know she planted that."

Bob didn't look at my eyes. He looked at the council members. He looked at the donors staring in horror. His public image was crumbling in real time, and he needed a scapegoat to preserve his shining reputation.

He stepped forward, pointing a rigid finger in my face.

"How could you do this?" Bob shouted, his voice ringing against the vaulted ceiling. "Because you're angry with me? Because you have personal grievances, you decide to commit corporate espionage?"

"Bob, shut your mouth," I whispered.

"No, I won't shut up!" he roared, playing to the crowd with sickening conviction. "Emily and I poured our blood, sweat, and tears into this charity! We worked day and night to build this for the community! Why do you have to destroy everything Emily and I worked so hard to build?"

"You didn't build this!" I screamed, the rage tearing through my throat. "I wrote every single page of that grant! I fixed your criminal negligence with the suppliers!"

A sudden, violent cramp ripped through my lower abdomen.

The pain was so sharp, so blinding, it felt like an iron hook dragging through my pelvis.

My knees hit the polished marble floor with a heavy thud.

"Tracy?" a woman gasped.

"Stop acting," Bob muttered through his teeth, leaning down with a vicious scowl. "You aren't getting out of this with a fainting spell."

"Bob..." I gasped, curling into a ball on the cold floor, both hands locked over my stomach. "The baby... Bob, the baby..."

A hot, sticky wetness spread between my thighs, soaking through my satin slip.

Emily gasped, pressing her hands to her mouth. "Is that... blood?"

The pain peaked into an agonizing spasm. Darkness crept at the edges of my vision.

"Call an ambulance!" someone yelled in the distance.

I didn't care about the board. I didn't care about the stolen bids or the murmuring crowd. I pressed my palms flat against my belly, weeping into the floor, begging the tiny spark inside me to hold on.

"Please," I sobbed into the marble. "Please, don't go. Stay. Please stay."

Red and blue emergency lights flashed across the ballroom windows. Heavy boots rushed toward me, voices barking medical jargon.

A oxygen mask was strapped over my face. As the stretcher lifted me off the ground, the last thing I saw was Bob standing beside Emily, whispering frantically into his phone while straightening his silk lapels.

The hospital room smelled of harsh bleach and cold iron.

My eyes fluttered open to a blank white ceiling. My lower body felt empty, hollowed out by a dull, throbbing ache that settled deep into my marrow.

A nurse was adjusting an IV drip beside the bed. She looked down at me, her expression soft with pity.

"Mrs. Miller," she said quietly. "I'm so sorry. The hemorrhage was too severe. We couldn't stop the miscarriage."

I closed my eyes.

No tears fell. The well inside me had run completely dry. The tiny woolen booties I had hidden in my vanity drawer flashed through my mind, now meaningless scraps of thread.

A quiet murmur drifted through the crack of the hospital room door.

I turned my head toward the glass panel.

Bob was standing in the corridor with Emily. His suit jacket was off, sleeves rolled up, his voice clipped and urgent.

"The press release goes out at seven," Bob said. "We frame it as an internal data breach handled swiftly by executive management. Em, make sure the council gets the revised bid before eight."

"What about Tracy?" Emily asked softly. "Bob, she lost the child. When she wakes up—"

"This incident cannot affect the company," Bob interrupted, his tone chillingly flat. "The harbor project is worth forty million dollars. We can't let a domestic mess ruin our momentum."

Emily paused. "She might tell people what really happened."

Bob went quiet for a long beat. When he spoke, there wasn't a trace of the husband who had once promised to protect me forever.

"She has no proof," Bob said coldly. "Wait until she calms down. If she plays along, I'll keep paying her allowance. If she causes trouble, we bury her with the leak investigation."

Through the glass, Emily rested her head against his chest, and Bob wrapped his arms around her waist.

I stared at the white ceiling.

The pain in my belly didn't throb anymore. It went numb, freezing into something hard and indestructible.

Five years of devotion, shredded for a public relations narrative. My baby's life, dismissed as an inconvenient domestic mess.

"Wait until I calm down," I murmured to the empty room.

A quiet, humorless breath escaped my lips.

I reached out, pulled the IV needle from the back of my hand, and pressed the call button for the nurse.

Bob wanted a war to protect his empire.

I was going to make sure he lost every single brick.
