Chapter 6

Chris

"Sir, there's another mysterious letter," Mark, my assistant, said.

"Close the door." Mark hurriedly closed the door to my office and returned to stand beside me.

Over the past two weeks, I have received two mysterious letters. I do not know who sent them. At first, I ignored them, but the sender didn't give up and seemed to push me to find out the truth behind the clues they had left in the letters.

The letter stated that Lisa, my wife, was having an affair with many men. However, I struggled to believe it because I knew her daily schedule. Besides, my mother, Anne, lived with us. Our house was always busy, with Alice Walker, our teenage daughter, and several maids, gardeners, and even security guards. So, it is very unlikely that Lisa is having an affair.

However, the contents of the second letter shook my confidence. The sender asked me to go to a supermarket where my wife usually shops for groceries. However, the sender asked me to stay in the car and watch my wife. After that, the sender also asked me to call my wife while she was shopping.

It seemed like a simple request, but it shook my confidence.

"Do you believe the letter's contents, sir?" Mark asked.

"What do you think I should do?" To be honest, even though my confidence was shaken, I believed in Lisa. We had been married for thirteen years. During that time, she had been a good wife and mother.

When my mother lived with us, she was also a good daughter-in-law. My mother always praised her in front of me and in front of her friends.

Besides, I never restricted her. Since we got married, I gave her freedom, and I never limited her spending because she was quite thrifty and good at managing all the finances in our house.

"Sir, there's something I want to tell you. I was hesitant before, whether I should say it or not," Mark replied.

I turned and looked at Mark, who was acting unusually. His face looked troubled. "What is it? Tell me."

"I have heard rumors about an affair between a wealthy business owner's wife and several men. And this woman is quite famous among the bad boys. Many men line up to sleep with her, even if it's just for a short time. Even photos of her naked back are circulating in a special group for cheaters. This sounds crazy, and I don't expect you to believe me. However, no one knows the woman's identity except those who have slept with her. Those who have slept with her will never reveal her identity," Mark replied. His face looked nervous, and his fingers fidgeted.

"Did you join that group? Can you show me the photo of the woman's back?" At that moment, I felt uneasy. A little fear crept into my heart. I wasn't ready to face the truth.

Mark immediately took his phone out of his pants pocket. After searching for a moment, he finally showed me the group. My eyes widened and I could hardly believe what I was seeing.

The group was quite active. All the members were active except Mark. Then, Mark showed me the gallery containing photos of the woman's back, who was the darling of the rich and naughty men.

At first, I didn't recognize the photo, but when I enlarged it, my heart felt like it was going to jump out of my chest. I recognized a small mole under the woman's neck.

At first glance, the photo was just a photo of a woman's naked upper back. However, when I looked more closely, she was completely naked. I saw a thin white cloth only covered her legs.

Instantly, my body felt weak. The mole couldn't be used as direct evidence to judge the woman who had been with me for thirteen years. There might be many women out there with the same shape and location of a mole as Lisa's.

"Mark."

"Yes, sir."

"Why did you join this group? Are you also part of these naughty men?"

Mark's eyes widened. He shook his head several times. "N-no, sir. I joined the group at the request of a friend. It's a long story."

"Okay."

"What's your plan?"

This curiosity was killing me. I had to confirm with my own eyes all the clues written in the secret letter.

I hurriedly stood up and got ready to leave. "Tell Jenna that if anyone looks for me, just say I'm busy with clients. Now come with me to the supermarket as written in that mysterious letter. Cancel today's work plans. Change everything to tomorrow."

Mark hurriedly conveyed my message to Jenna, my secretary. After that, we rushed to the supermarket in the city center. It was 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Usually, Lisa went shopping every Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. alone without a driver. In half an hour, I would know the truth behind the clues written in the mysterious letter.

Upon arriving at the supermarket parking lot, Mark saw Lisa's car parked near the online pickup spot. Finally, we parked near to Lisa's car. Mark deliberately borrowed Jenna's car to avoid suspicion.

From inside the car, I saw Lisa's car was empty. Maybe she was inside the supermarket. But the letter said Lisa was cheating at the supermarket. How could that be?

I called Lisa right away. After two rings, she answered the call. There was nothing unusual about her tone, and the background noise sounded like the usual sounds of a supermarket.

Could the mysterious letter just be a prank? But I waited and monitor things. After ending the call with Lisa, Mark and I waited in the car.

Fifteen minutes later, a black sedan pulled up and stopped right in front of Lisa's car. Lisa got out of the car and got into her car. However, she didn't leave the supermarket right away. Instead, she dried her hair and sprayed perfume on her neck and body.

Why Lisa? Why?

"Did you see the figure next to Lisa just now?" I asked Mark.

Mark was just as shocked as I was. Emotions slowly crept into my heart, even though my heart felt like it was being sliced by a knife bit by bit. The trust, love, and everything I had given her had been misused.

My life turned upside down in an instant. The image of a happy family that had been in my mind all this time was shattered in an instant.

"Sorry, sir. I didn't see it. But it was a man," Mark stammered.

"Do you remember the license plate number?" Mark nodded.

"Find out who owns that car."

She asked, "If I get divorced now, will you give me a place to call home?" Marcus answered confidently, "Yes." An awkward silence filled the room. Everyone expected a dramatic response from me, but instead, I calmly took off my wedding ring and walked away. He returned home late again that night. I handed him the divorce papers I had prepared beforehand, "Marcus, let's end this marriage." Upon hearing this, Marcus tugged impatiently at his tie, "Frances, this is absurd. Over such a trivial thing, you’re making a scene and daring to bring up divorce? You've really grown bold!" He had just pledged himself to another woman, in front of everyone, yet accused me of overreacting. No surprise there. My endless tolerance over the years had led him to see me as a pushover—someone he could manipulate at will, not even worthy of expressing anger.

To placate Kathryn, who was throwing her hundredth dramatic fit, Eric asked me to step down from my role as the bride. “She’s just young and a bit clueless. Could you do me a favor?” he pleaded. “Don’t worry, you’ll always be the real Mrs. Jimenez.” I clutched the edge of my wedding dress, hesitating before giving a silent nod. As I returned to the changing room, I overheard him jesting with his friends. “Savanna’s just like a loyal pet; she wouldn’t dare to oppose me.” “Are you really letting the girlfriend take center stage at your wedding? I bet you could tell her to give up her place on the marriage certificate too, and she’d go along with it.” Eric laughed smugly. “Definitely, want to wager on it?” He bet with his friend that after the wedding, he’d get a marriage certificate with Kathryn, and even if I were shattered, I’d quietly comply. I stood there for a while, then turned to leave without a word.

Ellie lay in bed, burning with yet another low-grade fever. Ever since her pregnancy began, her body had struggled to adjust. The daily low fevers had become a relentless routine. Her husband David was always attentive. Whenever Ellie felt unwell, he would bring a glass of warm water and personally feed her a vitamin C tablet. Half an hour after taking it, she was drenched in sweat from the pain. “David…” She rolled off the bed in agony. But David, unlike his usual gentle self, simply stood by the bed, looking down at his wife. “Just endure it a little longer. Once the baby’s gone, you’ll be fine.” Gone? Ellie’s fingers dug into the concrete floor until they bled, but she felt nothing. “What I just gave you wasn’t a vitamin. It’s an imported abortion pill. You’re a doctor—you understand. Once this pain passes and the embryo dies, everything will be fine.” Ellie looked up at the man before her. No. He wasn’t a man. He was a monster. After the educated youth returned to the cities, she had risked cutting ties with her own family to marry David, a fellow returnee from her class. Back then, he’d had nothing. Two young people from vastly different social standings had come together—for love. Ellie got into medical school and, after graduation, was assigned to City Hospital as an OB-GYN. David, through Ellie’s father’s connections, entered the local Machine Tool Plant. He rose swiftly. In less than five years, he achieved what others spent a lifetime dreaming of: becoming the head of the largest factory in the area. Just two days ago, Ellie’s father died of a heart attack. She had lost her usefulness… “David, abortion pills aren’t fully developed yet. It won’t be a clean process.” Tears in her eyes, Ellie begged him. She couldn’t die here. Not like this, for no clear reason! “Medical abortions are dangerous. They can cause hemorrhaging. Please, take me to the hospital.” Her abdomen grew hotter, warmth churning inside her. She shifted slightly—and a warm gush surged from between her legs. The excruciating pain came like a tidal wave, smashing her broken little boat into the ocean. Just then, the door opened. Carolyn stepped in. Seeing Ellie on the floor, she gasped and hid behind David. “Oh, dear, what’s happened to you?” This woman was David’s sister-in-law. After his brother passed away, David had brought Carolyn to the city under the pretext of medical treatment, claiming her health was poor. She had been living with them for nearly half a year. “Hurry, take me to the hospital.” Ellie looked at the two of them, a terrible premonition settling in her heart. David frowned, crouched halfway down, and took out a handkerchief to wipe Ellie’s forehead. “Can’t you just endure it a little longer? Once the bleeding stops, you’ll be fine.” Gripping her teeth until they ached, Ellie knew the truth: drug-induced abortions were still underdeveloped. There had been many clinical accidents—that’s why hospitals hadn’t adopted them widely. “I can’t endure it. I’m dying!” David’s gaze turned vicious. “Endure it! It’s just a bastard. I’m already being merciful by letting you abort it. If you don’t listen, I’ll divorce you right now!” “What? A bastard?” Ellie was in such extreme pain her words slurred. Her child—how could it be a bastard? David was her first love. She had given him her virginity. How could he say such a thing?
