Chapter 4

"The document is empty, Hannah."

Maya's voice carried through my phone speaker, cutting through the quiet of my home office. I stared at the recovered file on my monitor. Only the title remained intact: Phase Three: Make Hannah and Ben think it was their idea.

Scott stood in the doorway, arms crossed over his chest. "It was Paige's twisted joke. You are turning a technical glitch into a marriage sentence."

"You left a joke in a hidden folder for twenty-two months?" I asked, turning my chair to face him. "And you decided to edit it last night at midnight?"

Scott dropped his arms. His eyes darted toward the timestamp on the screen. "I do not remember what I clicked during the argument."

"He wiped the body text," Maya said over the line. "The metadata confirms it existed, but we cannot prove the full intent with just a title. We need an earlier version."

"There is no earlier version," Scott snapped. "Because it was a fantasy."

"File for temporary financial and custody orders today," Maya instructed me, ignoring him entirely. "Do not let him use the joint accounts or the kids' schedules as leverage."

"Draw up the papers," I said. "But do not petition to strip his custody. Just freeze the current address and school enrollments. Neither of us moves the kids without written consent."

Scott exhaled sharply, turning on his heel and walking down the hall.

Maya waited until his footsteps faded. "Photograph the screen with a second device," she said. "Then export the access log before he changes another permission."

I used my studio camera, not my phone, and captured the title, timestamp, and empty document in one frame. Then I generated a checksum for the recovered file and emailed it to Maya. The body text was gone, but the deletion now had a documented time and an identified administrator.

"Do not confront him about any other devices," Maya warned. "People who think they are losing control often destroy the thing that proves it."

I disabled remote editing on the home archive but left read-only synchronization active. If an older copy existed on a school drive, event server, or shared tablet, the system could still surface it. That narrow opening was the only reason I agreed to attend the academy fundraiser the next day.

Two hours later, the bell above Northlight Studio's door chimed. Paige stepped into the reception area, her hands shoved deep into her coat pockets.

"I need my blue appointment book," Paige said.

I walked to the storage cabinet and pulled out the worn leather planner. Seven years ago, I had slapped twelve neon stickers on the cover to track her therapy sessions. The edges were frayed now.

"You saved me then," Paige said, her voice falling to a fragile whisper. "Why can't you save me again?"

I placed the book on the reception desk. "Those nineteen nights you slept in my guest room were not a debt you owed me. They were proof I considered you family."

Paige reached for the planner, her fingers trembling. "I just needed someone who would not judge me, Hannah."

"That is exactly why you used me as a shield eighteen months ago," I said. "You knew I would look Ben in the eye and lie about your late-night calls. You weaponized my trust."

She stepped forward, opening her arms for a hug.

I took a step backward, keeping the desk between us. "You were my best friend."

Paige flinched at the past tense. She grabbed the book and hurried out the glass door.

By nine that evening, the neon sign outside Harbor House clicked off. I sat at the empty mahogany bar. Ben walked out of the kitchen, setting two glasses of club soda on the polished wood. No wine. No bourbon.

My phone lit up on the counter. A text from Paige flashed across the screen, begging for a private conversation.

Ben read the notification. He did not curse. He did not raise his voice.

"Do you need to pause tonight?" Ben asked, wiping down the bar with a white towel. "We wrote down the rules. If this is too much, we stop."

"I just need to review the server log," I said, reaching for the printed stack of paper between us.

Ben reached for the same page. His knuckles brushed against my fingers.

We both yanked our hands back.

The pause stretched. The quiet in the empty restaurant suddenly felt heavy, thick with a heat that had absolutely no business existing between us.

"Daytime meetings from now on," I told him, breaking the silence. "Public coffee shops."

"Agreed," Ben said instantly. He picked up the two untouched sodas and poured them straight down the bar sink.

The tension followed me into the next afternoon at the academy's annual fundraiser. Parents crowded the gymnasium, bidding on silent auction items. I walked toward the VIP tables, stopping dead at the sight of the assigned seating.

Paige had placed her own name card next to Scott's at the center of the table. My name and Ben's name sat at the far opposite ends.

"The system auto-sorted by primary contact," Paige said, appearing behind me in a silk wrap.

I picked up the heavy cardstock. "You used my old photography client template. This is not an automated glitch."

Ava walked up to the table. She looked at the arrangement, picked up her mother's card, and flipped it face down on the tablecloth.

A few feet away, the event photographer raised his camera. "Smile, Morgan family!"

Chloe crossed her arms and stepped out of the frame, refusing to stand next to Scott.

"Do not make the girls pick sides," I told Paige. I flipped the card back up, restoring the arrangement.

Then I flagged down the event host walking past our table with a clipboard.

"Correct the parent introductions before you get on stage," I instructed the host, pointing at the four names. "Introduce us as four distinct households. Do not group the marriages together."

Paige's jaw tightened, but she kept her polite smile frozen in place.

The event photographer lowered his camera and walked over to me. "Hannah, I just emailed you the backend drive link for the event photos. You can pull whatever you need for the school newsletter."

I opened the email on my phone and clicked the shared link.

The folder loaded on my screen. Nestled between the auction headshots and the catering receipts was an old directory titled Family Transition.

The timestamp read twenty-two months ago.

I tapped the directory.

The first thumbnail to load was not a text document, but a set of colored floor plans dividing our four children into two future bedrooms.
