Chapter 5

"Chloe gets the downtown guest room," I said, zooming in on the digital blueprint. "They put Max in our current house. Ava and Noah are separated based on compatibility with new partner."

Ben leaned over the VIP table at the fundraiser, staring at my phone screen. He did not reach for the device. Instead, he pressed the back of his hand hard against the edge of the table. His knuckles turned white against the white linen cloth.

"Look at the margins," Ben said, his voice flat.

I dragged my thumb across the screen. Neat text boxes hovered over the corners of each room. They listed Noah's peanut allergy and Chloe's preference for blackout curtains. They had mapped out our children's physical needs inside a fantasy life.

Under Noah's assigned room, Paige had typed a specific note.

"Hannah handles stable routine," I read aloud.

Ben pushed his weight off the table. He took a half step back, keeping a strict physical distance between us.

"They planned to leave us," I said, locking the screen. "And they planned to use us as free childcare while they built a new life."

"Send the file to me," Ben demanded. "I am showing this to the kids tonight. They need to know exactly who they are dealing with."

"No," I told him, sliding the phone into my purse. "We give this to the lawyers. We give it to Dr. Elena Ruiz. Let a professional therapist explain this to our children."

Ben stared at the empty space on the table. The anger radiated off him in tight, rigid lines.

"They are treating our kids like inventory," Ben argued.

"And if we drop this on them without a professional, we are using them as weapons," I fired back. "The therapist handles it."

Ben's jaw flexed. He nodded once. "Fine. The therapist."

Two hours later, we sat in a sterile conference room at my lawyer's office for a temporary custody mediation.

Scott threw a glossy photograph onto the center of the glass table.

"Ben wanted out ten months ago," Scott told the mediator, tapping the image. "He is using a few misunderstood text messages to justify a divorce he already planned."

I stared at the photograph. It showed the exact Harbor House restaurant order form Ben had shown me yesterday. The pros and cons list.

"Where did you get this?" I asked Scott.

"Paige found it in his locked desk," Scott replied, leaning back in his leather chair. "Ben is the architect of this entire mess, Hannah. He is manipulating you."

I looked across the table at Ben. He kept his eyes on the photograph, offering zero defense.

The mediator ended the session thirty minutes later with no resolution.

I cornered Ben in the hallway outside the elevators.

"You told me Paige never saw that list," I said.

"I told you I locked it in my desk," Ben corrected, pulling his phone from his pocket. "I knew she searched the office. I did not know she took a picture."

He unlocked his phone and shoved it into my hand.

"Give that to Maya," Ben said. "Tell her to pull my restaurant security logs. Check the timestamps. I am not playing Scott's game."

I held his phone. The metal felt heavy against my palm.

"We are canceling the evidence review tonight," I told him. "I cannot jump from a secret marriage into an alliance based on blind trust."

Ben did not argue. He did not chase me when the elevator doors opened.

"Keep the phone as long as you need," Ben said.

The doors slid shut, separating us. His refusal to push me made it impossible to group him in with Scott.

I sat in my home office at four o'clock. Maya's face filled my laptop monitor.

"I found the complete directory," Maya said, typing rapidly on her end. "The event auto-backup caught it. The folder is titled Family Transition."

"Who created it?" I asked.

"Paige," Maya answered. "But Scott edited the master file at 11:08 last night."

Maya shared her screen. Four subfolders appeared: Finances, Custody, Friends, and Phase Three.

She opened the Friends spreadsheet. Two columns sorted our entire social circle. One column read Will support. The other read Need convincing. A third column titled Use kids to stabilize listed the neighborhood parents.

My photography clients sat at the top of the manipulation list.

Paige's long message in the neighborhood chat was never a panic reaction. She was executing a two-year-old strategy.

I picked up my phone and drafted a text to Ben.

Maya found the original files. You were telling the truth. I am sorry I doubted you.

His reply appeared three seconds later.

You should doubt anyone asking for quick trust.

A second text followed immediately.

Send all new files to both lawyers at the same time. We stop acting as each other's sole support system.

"I need the Phase Three text," I told Maya, bringing my attention back to the monitor.

"It requires a recovery code from Scott's old tablet," Maya said, her tone sharpening. "Do not try to hack his personal account, Hannah. A judge will throw it out."

"I am a joint owner of the home network," I reminded her. "I can legally access the synced recovery prompt."

"You get three attempts," Maya warned. "Then it permanently locks."

A text notification popped up on my phone. Scott's name flashed across the banner.

Coming by the house in two hours to grab my private work files.

He had already changed the smart home permissions. The front door lock icon on my screen showed a gray, inaccessible symbol.

I ran down the stairs and pushed open the heavy oak door to the study. Scott's old tablet sat on the mahogany desk, plugged into the wall.

I tapped the screen. A warning banner flared bright red.

Recovery access expires in 01:59:41.

I set my phone on the desk and initiated a video call with Ben. He answered from the noisy kitchen of Harbor House. He stepped into the quiet alley out back, the brick wall framing his face.

"Scott is coming back in two hours," I said, pointing the camera at the tablet. "I have three tries to answer the security prompt for Phase Three."

"Read the prompt," Ben instructed, keeping his distance through the screen.

"It just says to generate the question," I replied, tapping the icon.

The timer ticked down to 01:12:06.

"Try his mother's maiden name," Ben suggested. "Or the year he opened his first account."

"He never uses standard security questions," I said. "He thinks they are too easy to guess."

The tablet screen flickered. The system generated the custom prompt Scott had written two years ago.

I stared at the black text on the white background.

"What does it say?" Ben asked through the phone speaker.

I read the question aloud to the empty room.

"Where did we decide Phase Three would begin?"
