Chapter 5

Evan came to my condo at nine, no call ahead, which told me before he said a word that the news wasn't good or wasn't bad — it was both, stacked on top of each other like a layer cake nobody asked for.

He set his laptop on my kitchen island. Pickles sniffed the bag he'd brought, decided it wasn't food, and walked away.

"Brandon booked a boardroom," Evan said. "West Coast Tower. Tomorrow, ten a.m."

"Ward Global." I said it flat, like a fact I already knew, because some part of me already had.

"He's pitching himself as an independent creator. Institutional backing, no agency middleman." Evan didn't look up from the screen. "He's telling their team he's 'finally free to build something real.'"

"That's not a masterpiece. That's a man trying to trade one leash for a bigger one."

"There's more." Now he looked up. "A source on their events team confirmed the pitch deck has an appendix. Photos. Your photos, from the street."

Something in my chest went very still, the way water goes still right before it freezes.

"He's going to put them on the screen," I said.

"Character evidence, allegedly. Against 'his former management's instability.'" Evan said the phrase like it tasted bad in his mouth. "He thinks it proves you're unfit to run talent."

I poured myself water I didn't drink. "He doesn't know whose building he's standing in."

"No," Evan said. "He doesn't."

He walked me through the rest without softening any of it, because that's not what I pay him for. The crypto wallet that paid the two men outside the restaurant, traced to a secondary account Brandon opened six months before he ever filed. The metadata on the burner account, matched to a device registered under Carly's name. The messages — screenshots she'd sold before, to two other men's wives, dressed up as concern and delivered for a fee.

"Two prior married men," Evan said. "Documented. There's a paid-DM extortion account we traced back eighteen months. She's done this before. She's just never done it to someone who could see the whole board."

I sat with that for a moment. Not long. Long enough.

"Pull Detective Cruz," I said. "I want LAPD in the corridor before Brandon finishes his opening slide."

"Already done." Evan almost smiled. "I called her an hour before I called you."

"Good." I meant it as a compliment. He took it as one.

He left a little after ten. I didn't sleep much, but I hadn't expected to. I lay in bed and thought about the boardroom I hadn't set foot in for ten years, the one with my father's name etched into the glass doors, and I thought: tomorrow I walk back into that building as someone I buried, and I don't even get to choose the reason.

The next part didn't need my help. It happened on its own, the way a house catches fire from a single dropped match once enough dry wood has piled up.

By midnight, Carly's name was everywhere for a different reason than the one she'd built for herself. A reporter Evan's legal package had quietly reached ran the first piece — two married men, years apart, both paying her to disappear after threatening to go to their wives. Then the DM account surfaced, screenshots of her own messages this time, cold and businesslike, negotiating a price for silence like she was pricing out a used car.

Her fans didn't leave quietly. They left loud, in comment sections, tearing down the fragile-bird persona post by post, the way you'd strip wallpaper — slow at first, then in long satisfying pieces. *just an assistant,* someone wrote, and under it, a hundred replies with screenshots that said otherwise.

I watched some of it. Not all of it. There's a point where watching someone's collapse stops being justice and starts being something else, something I didn't want to become good at.

At 11:58, Deborah O'Brien posted a statement on her own page, four sentences long, no punctuation wasted. *This is not the daughter I raised. I do not condone her actions. I will not be answering further questions. Please leave my family out of what she chose to do.*

I read it twice. I thought about my own mother, and the difference between a woman who loved someone anyway and a woman who finally, publicly, couldn't.

Miley texted me a single line around midnight. *She's cooked. You didn't even have to light the match.*

I didn't answer right away. I sat by the window with Pickles in my lap, the city doing its quiet blinking thing below me, and I thought about tomorrow — the glass doors, the boardroom, the screen Brandon thought he controlled.

He was about to learn that some rooms have a floor beneath the floor, and he'd been standing on the wrong one his whole life.

I finally texted Miley back. *Wear the good blazer tomorrow. Both of us.*

She sent back a single word. *Obviously.*
