My Husband Used My Money to Build His Mistress Chapter 1

I watched my husband win the biggest award of his career on a laptop screen, alone, in an office he didn't know I owned.

The livestream chat scrolled too fast to read. Four hundred thousand people were watching. I was one of them, and none of them knew it.

Brandon stood on that stage in a navy suit I'd picked out for him. He held the little gold microphone trophy like it might run away from him. His hands were shaking. I remembered when his hands used to shake like that before every stream, back when he had four hundred subscribers instead of four million.

"This one's for the woman who's been there through everything," he said. He looked straight into the camera. "Carly. I couldn't have done any of this without you."

The crowd cheered. My cat, Pickles, lifted his head off my desk and looked at me with his one good eye, like even he knew something had just broken.

I didn't cry. I want to be clear about that, because I've thought about that moment a hundred times since, and I never cried. My chest went tight, and then it went quiet, the way a room goes quiet right before a storm hits. I closed the livestream tab. I opened my laptop's other screen, the one with his contract on it.

My name is Mackenzie Lawson. To the internet, I don't exist. I'm the woman who books the venues and answers the emails and never shows up on camera. What almost nobody knows — not the eleven thousand employees under Halo Talent Group, not the streamers I represent, not even the husband whose trophy was still warm on that stage — is that I'm the one who built this whole company from a forty-thousand-dollar loan and a card table in Silver Lake. I'm the CEO. I have been for six years. Brandon didn't know that either. He thought I was just his wife, some quiet woman he kept secret "for the brand." He never once asked why I was so good at reading contracts.

He should have asked.

I pulled up the master agreement. Section fourteen, subsection C: any public statement crediting a non-contracted individual as a "creative partner" without prior written approval from Halo voids the standard revenue split and reverts control of all active brand deals to the agency. He signed that page. I remember watching him sign it, three years ago, in my office, without reading a word. He trusted me. That was the whole problem.

I worked through the night. I froze eleven pending sponsorship deals. I voided his revenue split, which meant every dollar he made from his channel now belonged to Halo until his contract term ended. And then I found the clause he really should have read — the one that said any public dedication of an award, gift, or honor to a person outside his immediate contracted circle required him to issue a follow-up statement, on camera, formally naming that person as his official creative partner. In writing. On the record.

He'd handed Carly a trophy. Now I was going to make him hand her a job title, in front of everyone, whether he wanted to or not. It wouldn't feel like romance once the lawyers were done with it. It would feel like a leash.

Miley walked into my office a little before midnight, two glasses of whiskey in one hand and a printed enforcement notice in the other. Miley's my COO, my first hire, and one of two people on this earth who knows my real name.

"So we're doing this," she said, setting a glass in front of me.

"We've been doing this," I said. "He just didn't know."

She sat on the edge of my desk. Pickles immediately climbed into her lap, because Pickles has never once been loyal to me when whiskey is involved. "You didn't cry," she said. It wasn't a question.

"No."

"You gonna?"

"No."

She nodded like that was the answer she expected, and we drank. She didn't ask me anything else. That's the thing about Miley — she knows exactly how much of me to leave alone.

By morning, the trade sites had noticed. *Streamer of the Year's Brand Deals Go Dark Overnight — Mystery Clause Triggers Mass Freeze.* Nobody had names yet. Nobody had reasons. The internet loves a mystery more than it loves an answer, so for a few hours, that's all it was — noise, speculation, a hashtag.

Brandon called me at 8:04 a.m. I know because I watched the screen light up on my kitchen counter while I fed Pickles his breakfast. I let it ring out. He called again four minutes later. I let that one ring out too.

He was in Carly's apartment. I knew that because his location still pinged off her building's Wi-Fi — a detail I'd have to fix later, since he'd apparently forgotten I still had admin access to the family plan.

I didn't answer. I finished making coffee, and I let the phone buzz itself quiet on the counter, and for the first time in three years, the silence between us didn't feel like something I owed him an explanation for.
