Chapter 4

I called my father on a Tuesday morning.

I hadn't spoken to him in four months. Not because of distance or anger, but because that was the agreement. I'd asked for space to build a marriage that belonged to me, and Dexter Stone was nothing if not a man who honored terms.

He answered on the first ring.

"Zoey."

Not a question. Just my name, spoken in that low, deliberate way he had, like he'd been expecting this call for years.

I stood at the window of my office, looking down at the street forty floors below. Tiny cars. Tiny people. The city moving like it always did, indifferent to everything breaking inside it.

"I need you," I said.

There was a pause. Not hesitation. Just space for him to shift gears, to move from father to strategist.

"Tell me."

So I did. I told him about the Amazon notification. The Tribeca penthouse. The forged mortgage. The embezzlement from Meridian Sachs. The recording outside Paisley's consultation room. The baby that wasn't mine. The family that had been built in the shadows of my marriage like a second house on the same foundation.

I said it all in clean, measured sentences. No crying. No shaking. Just facts, the way he'd taught me to present a deal.

When I finished, there was a long silence on the other end.

Then I heard my mother's voice, faint and distant. She'd been listening on the extension.

"Dexter," she said quietly. "Put me on speaker."

A click. Then Ximena's voice came through clear and sharp.

"Zoey. Are you safe?"

"I'm fine, Mom."

"Are you sure?"

"I'm sure."

Another pause. I heard my mother breathe in slowly, the way she did before board meetings when someone had tried to undercut her.

"Tell us when and where," my father said.

I closed my eyes. The relief was so sudden it almost hurt.

"Christmas Eve," I said. "The Plaza. Private dining room. Eight o'clock."

"We'll be there," Ximena said. Then, quieter, with an edge that could cut glass: "If they want to embarrass our daughter, let them do it in front of everyone who will remember it."

The line went dead.

I stood at the window a long time after that, holding the phone, watching the city blur and sharpen through the glass.

---

I booked the Plaza dining room that afternoon.

The private one on the second floor, the one with the crystal chandeliers and the view of Fifth Avenue. The one that cost more per night than most people's weddings. I told Drew it was an anniversary gift. A way to celebrate ten years.

He looked surprised when I mentioned it over dinner that night.

"The Plaza?" he said. "Zoey, that's—"

"Expensive, I know." I smiled at him across the table. "But we deserve it, don't we? Ten years. That's something worth celebrating."

He reached across and squeezed my hand. His palm was warm. Familiar.

"You're amazing," he said. "You know that?"

"I try."

He called his parents the next morning. I heard him on the phone in the living room, his voice bright and easy.

"Yeah, Zoey booked this incredible dinner at The Plaza for Christmas Eve. Private room, the whole thing. She really went all out."

A pause. Then a laugh.

"I know, right? I think she's trying to make up for—well. You know."

Another pause. His voice dropped lower, but not low enough.

"It's fine, Dad. Let her have this. It makes her feel better."

I stood in the hallway and listened. I didn't feel anything. That was the strangest part. I thought I would feel anger, or grief, or something sharp and hot. But there was nothing. Just a cold, clear space where those things used to be.

That night, Drew texted Paisley. I saw the notification light up his phone on the nightstand while he was in the shower.

*One last dinner. Then we figure out the next step.*

Her reply came thirty seconds later.

*Make it count, darling. 💙*

I memorized the words. Then I rolled over and closed my eyes.

---

I spent the next two weeks planning.

I met with Marcus three times. We went over every document, every filing, every piece of evidence. I had him arrange the AV equipment—a projector, a screen, wireless remotes synced to my phone. I chose the seating arrangement myself. Drew and his parents at the center of the table. My parents flanking me at the head. Security positioned at both exits, silent and invisible until the moment they needed not to be.

I picked the gown on a Thursday afternoon. Ivory silk, custom-fitted, with a neckline that sat just below my collarbone. It cost eighteen thousand dollars. I didn't blink when I signed the receipt.

The invitations went out on cream stationery, hand-delivered by courier. Formal. Elegant. The kind of thing Holland would show to her country club friends and brag about.

Everything was ready.

The only thing left was to show up.

On Christmas Eve morning, I woke up beside Drew and watched him sleep. His face was peaceful. Untroubled. He had no idea what was coming.

I got out of bed and walked to the window. The city was still dark, the skyline just beginning to glow with the first pale edge of dawn.

I thought about the girl I'd been ten years ago. The one who'd believed in love enough to hide a fortune for it. The one who'd thrown herself in front of a car because she couldn't imagine a world without him in it.

She was gone.

And in her place was someone colder. Sharper. Someone who knew exactly what she was worth.

Tonight, everyone else would know it too.

I had only one plan: To git rid of my new stepdad. I never knew; I'd fall hard for him! His free hand slid under my sweater, cupping my breast and pinching the nipple through my bra until I gasped into his mouth. "Clothes off," he murmured against my lips, his voice rough with need. "I need to feel you, remind myself you're all mine." "Mark, Carl's right outside the door," I protested, but my hands were already tugging at his shirt. "Door's locked and soundproof. Do it now." He backed me toward the couch, helping yank the sweater over my head and shoving my jeans down my legs. I stood there in my black lace thong and bra, and he dropped to his knees without a word, his eyes hungry as he gripped my thighs. "Spread those legs for me, baby." I did, bracing one hand on the couch arm as his mouth covered me, his tongue flat and hot against my clit, sucking just right while two thick fingers thrust deep inside and curled to hit that spot. "You taste so damn good-all mine," he growled between licks, the vibration sending me over the edge fast. My legs shook as the orgasm ripped through me, and I cried out his name, grinding against his face. He stood up quick, pants shoved down, his thick cock hard and ready. He lifted me like I weighed nothing, impaling me in one smooth thrust. My back hit the leather couch, and he pounded into me rough and deep, his hips snapping with every word. "No one touches what's mine. No one even looks too long." The pleasure built again fast, and I shattered around him, pulling him over the edge too as he groaned and spilled hot inside me, holding us locked together while we caught our breath.
