Chapter 5

The ballroom was empty when I got there. Two hours early, just like always. I liked being early. It gave me time to make sure everything was exactly where it needed to be.

I walked the length of the room once, slow, my heels quiet on the carpet. The projection screen hung at the far wall, white and waiting. I ran my fingers along its edge like I was checking for dust. There wasn't any. The staff here didn't miss things.

My phone sat heavy in my clutch. Inside it: the recording from Paisley's office. The screenshots from the family group chat. The forged mortgage. The wire transfers to Ridgeline, to Anchor Bridge, to Meridian Sachs. Ten years of my life, organized into slides, timestamped and color-coded, ready to play at the press of a button.

I stopped in front of a dark monitor mounted near the entrance and used it as a mirror. I reapplied my lipstick, a deep red I never wore around Drew because he said it made me look 'like I was trying too hard.' I pressed my lips together and studied my reflection.

I didn't look like a woman about to lose anything.

I looked like someone about to collect.

Marcus texted at six-fifteen. *AV team confirms remote sync. Security in place, both exits. Your parents will arrive at eight-fifteen sharp, per your instruction.*

I typed back a single word. *Good.*

Then I closed the clutch, smoothed the front of my gown, and walked out to the hallway to wait for my husband.

---

Drew arrived at seven with his parents trailing behind him like he was leading a small, badly organized parade. Harvey wore his good suit, the navy one he saved for events where he wanted people to notice him noticing them. Holland had on pearls that caught the chandelier light every time she moved her head.

"Zoey." Harvey's eyes swept the room, the chandeliers, the gilded moldings, the private waiters already stationed by the door. "Well. This is something."

"Merry Christmas, Harvey."

"It's a lot of money." He said it like a compliment and an accusation at the same time. "A lot of money for a woman who can't give this family what it needs."

I smiled. "I suppose I like to spend where it counts."

Holland stepped in close and patted my arm, the same gesture she used every year, like she was checking if I'd gotten any softer, any weaker. "You look thin, dear." Her eyes traveled down and back up, cataloguing. "Stress does terrible things to a woman's body. Especially one already struggling."

"I've been busy," I said. "Planning tonight."

"Of course you have." She smiled the smile she reserved for waitstaff and people she considered beneath negotiation.

Drew hovered a step behind them, his phone already out, thumb moving. He didn't look up. He didn't say a word.

I watched him not defend me and felt nothing. That was new. That was almost peaceful.

We were seated by seven-thirty. Harvey at my left, Holland across from him, Drew beside me like a man doing his duty. My parents' chairs sat empty at the head of the table, waiting.

Nobody asked why there were two extra place settings. I hadn't told them who they were for.

---

Harvey stood before the appetizers were even cleared, tapping his water glass with a fork like he was calling a board meeting to order.

"To the Coleman family legacy," he said, lifting his glass. "Ten years is a long time. A lot of patience on this family's part." His eyes cut to me, brief and sharp. "Let's hope next year finally brings good news."

"Hear, hear," Holland murmured, already reaching for her phone.

"Oh — I have to show you this." She turned the screen toward the table, scrolling. "A friend's grandchild. Isn't he precious?"

I looked at the photo. Dark hair. Chubby cheeks. A toothless grin I recognized from a screenshot in my own folder, the one labeled *Family* with four participants.

"Sweet boy," I said.

"Isn't he?" Holland's smile widened, proud, careless. "I just adore babies at this age."

Drew's jaw tightened. Just barely. A muscle jumping once beneath his skin before he caught himself and reached for his wine.

"Mom," he said, low. "Maybe put the phone away."

"I'm just showing Zoey a picture, Drew. No harm in that."

No harm. I almost laughed. I pressed my lips together instead and let the moment pass over me like weather.

Harvey refilled his glass, oblivious or indifferent, I couldn't tell which anymore. "Family is everything," he said, to no one in particular. "You understand that, don't you, Zoey?"

"I understand family very well," I said.

He nodded, satisfied, mistaking my calm for defeat. He always did.

I sat at the head of the table, spine straight, hands folded, and let every small cruelty land and settle and stack, one on top of the other, brick by brick.

Somewhere below us, in the lobby, a clock was ticking toward eight-fifteen.

I checked my watch once, briefly, and smiled at Harvey like I hadn't heard a word he'd said.

"More wine?" I asked.

Knocked up by my new Stepdad Novel Cover

I had only one plan: To git rid of my new stepdad. I never knew; I'd fall hard for him! His free hand slid under my sweater, cupping my breast and pinching the nipple through my bra until I gasped into his mouth. "Clothes off," he murmured against my lips, his voice rough with need. "I need to feel you, remind myself you're all mine." "Mark, Carl's right outside the door," I protested, but my hands were already tugging at his shirt. "Door's locked and soundproof. Do it now." He backed me toward the couch, helping yank the sweater over my head and shoving my jeans down my legs. I stood there in my black lace thong and bra, and he dropped to his knees without a word, his eyes hungry as he gripped my thighs. "Spread those legs for me, baby." I did, bracing one hand on the couch arm as his mouth covered me, his tongue flat and hot against my clit, sucking just right while two thick fingers thrust deep inside and curled to hit that spot. "You taste so damn good-all mine," he growled between licks, the vibration sending me over the edge fast. My legs shook as the orgasm ripped through me, and I cried out his name, grinding against his face. He stood up quick, pants shoved down, his thick cock hard and ready. He lifted me like I weighed nothing, impaling me in one smooth thrust. My back hit the leather couch, and he pounded into me rough and deep, his hips snapping with every word. "No one touches what's mine. No one even looks too long." The pleasure built again fast, and I shattered around him, pulling him over the edge too as he groaned and spilled hot inside me, holding us locked together while we caught our breath.
