Chapter 3

I sat in the car for eleven minutes before I trusted my hands enough to drive.

The recording kept playing in my head. *She takes them every morning. It's almost sweet.* I didn't know yet what it meant, not fully. But I knew enough. I knew Paisley had touched something in me I hadn't given her permission to touch.

I drove home the long way, past the park, past the church where Drew and I got married. I didn't look at either one.

That night, after Drew fell asleep with his hand curled against my hip like he had every right to it, I got up and opened the laptop at the kitchen table. I pulled out my phone and dialed a number I hadn't used in six years.

My father set it up when I first married Drew. An encrypted line straight to Stone Capital's internal legal team, the kind that didn't show up on any phone bill, the kind that existed for exactly this reason — in case I ever needed the family without needing to explain why.

A man named Marcus Hale answered on the second ring. His voice hadn't changed. Calm, low, unhurried.

"Ms. Stone," he said. He never used Coleman. He never had.

"I need a full financial audit," I said. "My husband. Quietly. Starting tonight."

"Understood. Scope?"

"Everything. Bank accounts, mortgages, business filings. And I have a recording I need logged as evidence. Chain of custody, all of it."

There was a pause. Not surprise — Marcus didn't do surprise. Just the sound of him writing something down.

"I'll have preliminary numbers by Thursday," he said. "Ms. Stone. Are you safe?"

"I'm fine," I said. "I just want the truth."

"Then I'll get it for you."

I hung up and sat in the dark a long time, listening to the refrigerator hum, thinking that I'd just done something I could never undo. I had opened the door between my two lives. I felt the cold air rush through it.

---

Thursday came fast.

Marcus sent the file through a secure portal, no email trail, nothing that could be traced back to a name Drew would recognize. I read it at my desk at the office, door locked, blinds drawn, my coffee going cold beside me.

The first thing I found was the second mortgage.

Eight months ago, Drew had taken out a loan against the Tribeca penthouse. Four hundred thousand dollars. My signature was on the authorization form.

I stared at it for a long moment. The loops of the letters were close, careful, almost right. Almost. But I knew my own handwriting, and I hadn't written that.

He'd forged it.

I scrolled through the wire transfers that followed. The money hadn't gone to renovations, or investments, or anything he could have claimed as legitimate. It had gone, in four separate transfers, into an account under the name Paisley Perkins Wellness LLC.

A fertility clinic that treated me. Paid for with a loan against a home I'd bought under a shell company, forged in my own name, funneled straight into my best friend's pocket.

I kept reading. My hands were steady. That surprised me more than anything else that night — how steady they'd become.

The MBA I'd paid for. The client list I'd quietly steered his way through three different intermediaries so it would never look like charity. The corner office, the promotions, the reputation he wore like it was something he'd earned alone. All of it, every gift, had been repurposed. Redirected. Turned into scaffolding for a life that had never once included me in its blueprints.

I thought of him kissing my forehead over Thai food. *You're my whole world, Zoey.*

I closed that file and opened the next one.

---

This one took longer to understand.

Drew's real estate firm ran deals through a subsidiary called Ridgeline Property Group. I'd heard the name a hundred times at dinner, never thought twice about it. Marcus had flagged something in the ownership structure, a note in the margin: *See attached. Corporate architecture, three layers deep.*

I followed the chain myself, the way my father taught me before I could legally sign a contract. Ridgeline Property Group was owned by a holding company called Anchor Bridge Partners. Anchor Bridge was owned by a private investment vehicle called Meridian Sachs Group.

Meridian Sachs Group was a wholly owned subsidiary of Stone Capital.

I read that line four times.

Drew had spent three years skimming commissions off deals, padding invoices, routing kickbacks through vendor accounts that didn't exist. Small enough that no one at the firm had noticed. Small enough that it looked like ordinary corporate waste.

He'd been stealing from my family's company the entire time. Not metaphorically. Not in some poetic, ironic way I could shrug off. Literally. Dollar by dollar, invoice by invoice, from a business that traced back, through paper and shell and signature, to my father's desk.

He had no idea. That was the part that almost made me laugh, if laughing had still been something my body remembered how to do.

He thought he was clever enough to steal from strangers.

He'd been stealing from me the entire time. He just hadn't known which me.

I printed the documents. I labeled the folder. I added it to the growing stack beside the recording, the screenshots, the forged mortgage, the shipping addresses in Tribeca.

Then I picked up my phone and texted Marcus one line.

*Start drafting the filings. I want everything ready before Christmas.*

He replied within a minute.

*Understood, Ms. Stone. It will be ready.*

I set the phone down on the desk and looked out the window at the city, glittering and indifferent, the same as it had been every night of my marriage.

Somewhere out there, Drew was probably picking out flowers.

Knocked up by my new Stepdad Novel Cover

I had only one plan: To git rid of my new stepdad. I never knew; I'd fall hard for him! His free hand slid under my sweater, cupping my breast and pinching the nipple through my bra until I gasped into his mouth. "Clothes off," he murmured against my lips, his voice rough with need. "I need to feel you, remind myself you're all mine." "Mark, Carl's right outside the door," I protested, but my hands were already tugging at his shirt. "Door's locked and soundproof. Do it now." He backed me toward the couch, helping yank the sweater over my head and shoving my jeans down my legs. I stood there in my black lace thong and bra, and he dropped to his knees without a word, his eyes hungry as he gripped my thighs. "Spread those legs for me, baby." I did, bracing one hand on the couch arm as his mouth covered me, his tongue flat and hot against my clit, sucking just right while two thick fingers thrust deep inside and curled to hit that spot. "You taste so damn good-all mine," he growled between licks, the vibration sending me over the edge fast. My legs shook as the orgasm ripped through me, and I cried out his name, grinding against his face. He stood up quick, pants shoved down, his thick cock hard and ready. He lifted me like I weighed nothing, impaling me in one smooth thrust. My back hit the leather couch, and he pounded into me rough and deep, his hips snapping with every word. "No one touches what's mine. No one even looks too long." The pleasure built again fast, and I shattered around him, pulling him over the edge too as he groaned and spilled hot inside me, holding us locked together while we caught our breath.
