Chapter 2

Drew came home at six-fifteen on Tuesday with flowers. White roses, my favorite. He set them on the counter and kissed my cheek, his hand lingering at my waist.

"For you," he said. "Just because."

I looked at the bouquet. Twelve stems, perfectly arranged. The kind of gesture that used to make my chest warm.

"They're beautiful," I said.

He smiled and pulled me closer. "Not as beautiful as you."

I let him hold me. I counted to five in my head, then stepped back to find a vase.

He cooked that night. Lemon chicken with roasted vegetables, the recipe I'd taught him years ago. He moved around the kitchen with easy confidence, humming something under his breath. He poured me a glass of white wine and clinked his glass against mine.

"To us," he said.

"To us," I echoed.

We ate at the table instead of the island. He asked about my day. I gave him the same answers I'd been giving for weeks—work was fine, I'd gone to the gym, I was thinking about repainting the guest room. He nodded and smiled and reached across the table to squeeze my hand.

"I love you," he said. "You know that, right?"

"I know."

After dinner, he loaded the dishwasher while I wiped down the counters. He came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist, his chin resting on my shoulder.

"I'm the luckiest man alive," he murmured into my hair.

I closed my eyes. The words should have meant something. Once, they would have.

Now they were just noise.

---

He fell asleep at ten-thirty, one arm draped over my hip. I waited until his breathing deepened and evened out. Then I slipped out from under his arm and padded barefoot into the kitchen.

The laptop was where I'd left it, closed on the counter. I opened it. The screen glowed pale blue in the darkness.

I pulled up Drew's cloud account. I'd had the password for years—he'd given it to me himself, back when we still believed in transparency. Back when I thought we had nothing to hide.

The text messages loaded slowly. I scrolled through weeks of conversations. Most were mundane. Work emails. Group chats with college friends. But then I found it.

A thread labeled "Family."

Four participants: Drew, Paisley, Harvey, Holland.

I clicked.

The messages went back months. Photos of the baby—chubby cheeks, dark hair, a toothless grin. Holland's captions were effusive. *Our REAL grandchild 💙. He has Drew's eyes. Finally, a Coleman heir.*

Harvey's messages were blunt. *The boy deserves the Coleman name. We need to make this official.*

Drew's replies were worse. Not because they were cruel, but because they were casual. Thumbs-up emojis. *Working on it.* *Give me time.*

And then, three weeks ago: *We need to ease Zoey out. Gently. She'll understand eventually.*

Paisley had replied with a heart emoji.

I took screenshots. One after another. I saved them to the folder with today's date. My hands didn't shake. They should have. But they didn't.

I closed the laptop and sat in the dark kitchen for a long time. Outside, a siren wailed. Someone shouted on the street below. The refrigerator hummed.

I thought about the man sleeping in our bed. The man who'd held me in the hospital and sworn he didn't need children. The man I'd saved.

I thought about the penthouse I'd bought him. The career I'd built for him. The decade I'd spent believing we were enough.

And I realized something.

I wasn't sad anymore.

I was cold.

---

The appointment was scheduled for Thursday at two. I arrived fifteen minutes early, the way I always did. The clinic was quiet. Soft music played through hidden speakers. The receptionist smiled and told me Dr. Perkins was running a few minutes behind.

I sat in the waiting room and flipped through a magazine without reading it.

At two-ten, the receptionist's phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen, then at me.

"Dr. Perkins is ready for you," she said.

I followed her down the hallway. The consultation room door was slightly ajar. I could hear voices inside—low, familiar.

I stopped.

The receptionist kept walking, oblivious. I stayed where I was, just outside the door.

Drew's voice drifted out. "...can't keep doing this forever."

Paisley laughed. It was a soft, intimate sound. "You won't have to. She still thinks the supplements are working. She takes them every morning. It's almost sweet."

My hand moved before I could think. I pulled my phone from my purse and pressed record.

Four minutes and thirty-seven seconds.

That's how long I stood there. That's how long I listened.

Drew talked about timelines. Paisley talked about patience. They talked about me like I was a problem to be managed. A loose end to be tied up.

When the receptionist came back down the hall, I slipped my phone into my pocket and smiled.

"Actually," I said, "I'm not feeling well. Can we reschedule?"

She looked concerned. "Of course. Are you all right?"

"I'm fine," I said. "Just a headache."

I walked out of the clinic into the bright afternoon. The sun was too warm. The street was too loud.

I got into my car and sat behind the wheel. I didn't start the engine. I just sat there, staring at the steering wheel, while the recording played in my mind on an endless loop.

*She takes them every morning. It's almost sweet.*

I thought about the supplements Paisley had prescribed. The little glass bottles with handwritten labels. The ones she'd told me would help regulate my cycle, support my uterine lining, give us the best possible chance.

I thought about taking them every single morning for the past two years.

And I finally let myself understand.

She hadn't been helping me get pregnant.

She'd been making sure I never could.

I had only one plan: To git rid of my new stepdad. I never knew; I'd fall hard for him! His free hand slid under my sweater, cupping my breast and pinching the nipple through my bra until I gasped into his mouth. "Clothes off," he murmured against my lips, his voice rough with need. "I need to feel you, remind myself you're all mine." "Mark, Carl's right outside the door," I protested, but my hands were already tugging at his shirt. "Door's locked and soundproof. Do it now." He backed me toward the couch, helping yank the sweater over my head and shoving my jeans down my legs. I stood there in my black lace thong and bra, and he dropped to his knees without a word, his eyes hungry as he gripped my thighs. "Spread those legs for me, baby." I did, bracing one hand on the couch arm as his mouth covered me, his tongue flat and hot against my clit, sucking just right while two thick fingers thrust deep inside and curled to hit that spot. "You taste so damn good-all mine," he growled between licks, the vibration sending me over the edge fast. My legs shook as the orgasm ripped through me, and I cried out his name, grinding against his face. He stood up quick, pants shoved down, his thick cock hard and ready. He lifted me like I weighed nothing, impaling me in one smooth thrust. My back hit the leather couch, and he pounded into me rough and deep, his hips snapping with every word. "No one touches what's mine. No one even looks too long." The pleasure built again fast, and I shattered around him, pulling him over the edge too as he groaned and spilled hot inside me, holding us locked together while we caught our breath.
