Chapter 1

The notification came while I was folding laundry.

My phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. I glanced over, expecting a text from Drew about dinner. Instead, a bright orange banner lit up the screen: *Amazon Price Drop Alert: Bugaboo Fox5 Stroller – Now $1,299 (Save $200)*.

I stared at it.

We didn't have a stroller. We didn't have a baby. We weren't having a baby.

I picked up the phone. My thumb hovered over the notification. Maybe it was a mistake. Maybe Amazon's algorithm had glitched. Maybe—

I opened the app.

The order history loaded slowly, line by line. The stroller was there, purchased three weeks ago under Drew's account. Below it: a case of Similac Pro-Advance infant formula. A white convertible crib. A set of organic cotton onesies in size newborn. A cashmere baby blanket in pale blue.

I scrolled.

More formula. A bottle warmer. A diaper pail. A mobile with tiny felt elephants. A sound machine. A changing pad.

The dates stretched back four months.

I set the phone down on the counter very carefully, like it might explode if I moved too fast. My hands were shaking. I pressed them flat against the granite and forced myself to breathe.

Four months.

Four months of purchases I never made. Four months of a life I didn't know existed.

I picked up the phone again and checked the shipping addresses. Most were sent to our apartment. But some—too many—were sent to a different location. An address in Tribeca.

I recognized it immediately.

Lexington Holdings. The shell company I'd set up years ago to buy the penthouse. The penthouse I'd purchased to help Drew close his first major real estate deal, to give him a property he could claim as his own commission, to launch his career.

The penthouse I'd given him.

I opened my laptop and pulled up the Lexington Holdings account. The property management portal showed the unit was occupied. Utilities active. Security system armed nightly.

Someone was living there.

I sat very still in the kitchen, surrounded by half-folded towels and the hum of the refrigerator. Outside, the city moved on. Taxis honked. Someone laughed on the sidewalk below. The world kept turning.

But inside my chest, something had stopped.

---

Drew came home at seven-thirty with Thai food from the place on Amsterdam I loved. He set the bags on the counter and kissed my forehead, his hand warm against the back of my neck.

"Hey, beautiful," he said. "Long day?"

I looked up at him. His tie was loosened. His sleeves were rolled up. He smelled like expensive cologne and the faint musk of the subway.

"Not too bad," I said. My voice sounded normal. I was surprised by that. "You?"

"Exhausting." He pulled containers out of the bag. Pad thai. Green curry. Spring rolls. "Harvey called three times about the quarterly projections. I swear, my dad thinks I'm still twenty-five."

He laughed. I smiled.

We ate at the kitchen island. He told me about a difficult client. I asked the right questions. I nodded at the right moments. I watched his mouth move and wondered if anything coming out of it had ever been true.

After dinner, he loaded the dishwasher while I wiped down the counter. He came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder.

"I don't know what I'd do without you," he murmured. "You're my whole world, Zoey. You know that, right?"

"I know," I said.

He kissed my temple and went to take a shower.

I stood at the sink and stared at my reflection in the darkened window. The woman looking back at me had the same face I'd had this morning. Same brown eyes. Same dark hair pulled into a messy bun. But something underneath had shifted.

I didn't recognize her anymore.

---

That night, I lay awake beside Drew and listened to him breathe. He always slept deeply, one arm thrown over his head, his face relaxed and peaceful.

I stared at the ceiling and watched the headlights from passing cars sweep across the plaster. The numbers from the Amazon order history played on a loop in my mind. Four months. Thirty-seven purchases. Over twelve thousand dollars.

All sent to the penthouse I bought him.

All for a baby I didn't know existed.

I turned my head and looked at Drew's sleeping face. In the dim light from the street, he looked younger. Innocent. Like the man I'd fallen in love with ten years ago. The man who'd walked me to my car in the rain. The man who'd held my hand in the hospital and promised me forever.

The man I'd thrown myself in front of a car to save.

I reached out slowly and touched his shoulder. His skin was warm under my fingertips.

He didn't stir.

I pulled my hand back and got out of bed. I walked barefoot into the kitchen and opened my laptop. The blue light illuminated the empty room.

I created a new folder on my desktop. I labeled it with today's date.

Then I began to organize everything I'd found. Screenshots of the order history. The Tribeca address. The property management records. I color-coded them. I timestamped them. I built a structure around the chaos, because structure was the only thing I knew how to do when the world stopped making sense.

The grief was there, waiting. A howling, clawing thing just beneath my ribs. But I didn't let it out.

Instead, I packed it behind something colder.

And I began to plan.

Knocked up by my new Stepdad Novel Cover

I had only one plan: To git rid of my new stepdad. I never knew; I'd fall hard for him! His free hand slid under my sweater, cupping my breast and pinching the nipple through my bra until I gasped into his mouth. "Clothes off," he murmured against my lips, his voice rough with need. "I need to feel you, remind myself you're all mine." "Mark, Carl's right outside the door," I protested, but my hands were already tugging at his shirt. "Door's locked and soundproof. Do it now." He backed me toward the couch, helping yank the sweater over my head and shoving my jeans down my legs. I stood there in my black lace thong and bra, and he dropped to his knees without a word, his eyes hungry as he gripped my thighs. "Spread those legs for me, baby." I did, bracing one hand on the couch arm as his mouth covered me, his tongue flat and hot against my clit, sucking just right while two thick fingers thrust deep inside and curled to hit that spot. "You taste so damn good-all mine," he growled between licks, the vibration sending me over the edge fast. My legs shook as the orgasm ripped through me, and I cried out his name, grinding against his face. He stood up quick, pants shoved down, his thick cock hard and ready. He lifted me like I weighed nothing, impaling me in one smooth thrust. My back hit the leather couch, and he pounded into me rough and deep, his hips snapping with every word. "No one touches what's mine. No one even looks too long." The pleasure built again fast, and I shattered around him, pulling him over the edge too as he groaned and spilled hot inside me, holding us locked together while we caught our breath.
