Chapter 2

The credit card declined at the pharmacy on Tuesday.

I stood at the counter with Macie's lotion in my hand — the vanilla one, the only brand that didn't smell like hospitals — and watched the cashier swipe it three times before she looked up at me with that expression people get when they're trying to be kind about your humiliation.

"Do you have another card?"

I did. My personal account, the one I'd had since before Gideon. I used that one instead and didn't say anything, but my hand shook putting it back in my wallet.

I called the bank from the parking lot. The woman on the line spoke in that smooth, apologetic tone they must teach in training. "The account was closed by the primary cardholder on Monday, Mrs. Matthews. For budgetary restructuring, according to the notes."

"Budgetary restructuring," I repeated.

"Yes, ma'am. Is there anything else I can help you with today?"

I hung up without answering.

I sat in the car for a long time, staring at the vanilla lotion on the passenger seat. Forty-one thousand a month for Macie's care. But twenty-three dollars for lotion was suddenly too much.

I understood the message.

---

Wednesday, I called the facility to confirm Sunday's visit. The nurse I usually spoke with sounded uncomfortable.

"Mrs. Matthews, we've been instructed to limit visits to the scheduled window only. Two to four on Sundays. No exceptions."

"Instructed by who?"

Silence. Then, quieter: "Your husband called Monday. He said it was for your own wellbeing. Too much time at the facility wasn't healthy."

My fingers went cold around the phone.

"I see," I said. "Thank you."

I didn't argue. There was no point. Gideon had built the walls. The staff just lived inside them.

I tried calling our driver Thursday morning to ask about a trip to Brooklyn. He didn't pick up. Twenty minutes later, Gideon texted me.

*Harris has a new schedule. Let me know if you need to go somewhere and I'll arrange it.*

No question mark. No room for negotiation.

I deleted the text without responding.

---

Friday night, we hosted the Sinclairs and the Lins for dinner. Gideon had mentioned it once, two weeks ago, and I'd nodded and made the arrangements like I always did. Caterer, wine, flowers. I wore the navy dress he liked because it photographed well.

Camilla arrived with them.

She walked in wearing cream silk and a smile that didn't reach her eyes, and Gideon's hand settled at the small of her back the same way it had at the gala. Whitney Sinclair's gaze flicked to me, just for a second, before she looked away.

"Everyone, you remember Camilla," Gideon said smoothly. "Close family friend."

I shook her hand. Her fingers were cold and her grip was firm, like she was testing me.

"So lovely to see you again, Keilani," she said, and her voice was warm honey over glass.

"Likewise," I said.

I smiled. I poured wine. I laughed at Marcus Chen's story about his daughter's college essay. I asked Whitney about her foundation gala next month. I was perfect.

Under the table, I rubbed my thumb over my wedding ring until my skin felt raw.

When they left, Gideon kissed Camilla's cheek in the doorway. She touched his arm and said something I couldn't hear. He watched her walk to the elevator before he came back inside.

He didn't say anything to me. He went to his office and closed the door.

I stood in the kitchen and stared at the wineglasses lined up on the counter, still marked with lipstick, and I thought about how easy it would be to break one. Just to hear the sound.

I didn't.

I washed them instead. One by one. Until my hands were numb from the hot water.

---

Late that night, I couldn't sleep. Gideon was out. He hadn't said where. He didn't anymore.

I went to his office. The door wasn't locked. It never was — he didn't think I was brave enough to look.

His desk was neat except for a stack of papers near the lamp. Billing statements. Wire transfers. I picked up the first page and my hands started shaking before I even understood what I was reading.

Charges to entities I'd never heard of. Transfers to accounts with names that didn't match anything I recognized. Numbers that didn't line up with what he'd told me Macie's care cost.

I pulled out my phone. I photographed every page, one by one, my heart pounding so loud I thought it would wake the building. I didn't know what I was looking at. I didn't know what it meant.

But I knew it was wrong.

I uploaded everything to a cloud folder I'd created with an old email address Gideon didn't know about. Then I put the papers back exactly where I'd found them, edges aligned, the lamp at the same angle.

I walked out of the office and closed the door without a sound.

Back in bed, I lay in the dark and stared at the ceiling. My phone was under my pillow. The folder was locked with a password only I knew.

I didn't have a plan yet.

But I had something.

And for the first time in five years, that felt like enough.
