Chapter 3

Camilla sat in her car outside the facility and stared at the building like it owed her something.

Five stories of pale brick and tinted glass. A discreet bronze plaque near the entrance that said nothing about what happened inside, only the name: *Riverside Extended Care.* Clean. Expensive. The kind of place where suffering happened quietly, behind closed doors, with leather chairs in the waiting room and art that cost more than most people's cars.

She'd been here twice before. Once to see where Gideon's money went every month. Once to confirm that the woman in the bed was as gone as she'd heard.

Macie Ward. Twenty-eight years old. Breathing because machines told her lungs to. Existing because her sister couldn't let go.

Camilla had expected to feel something, looking at her. Pity, maybe. Disgust. Something.

She'd felt nothing.

Just a body in a bed, and a bill that never stopped coming.

Now, sitting in her car with her phone in her hand, Camilla felt something else entirely.

Victory.

She pressed play.

The recording was short. Just under three minutes. The audio quality wasn't perfect — a little muffled, like it had been captured through a phone left face-down on a table — but the voices were clear enough.

Marcus Chen's voice came first, cautious and low. *"You ever think about just... letting it go? The sister, I mean. It's been what, five years? That's a long time to keep paying for someone who's never waking up."*

A pause. The clink of ice in a glass.

Then Gideon's voice, smooth and unbothered. *"She's not going to wake up, Marcus. That's the point."*

*"Then why keep her on the machines?"*

Another pause. Longer this time. Camilla could picture him swirling his drink, looking out a window somewhere, talking about a human life the way other men talked about stock portfolios.

*"Because Keilani needs to believe there's a chance,"* Gideon said. *"As long as Macie's heart is beating on a monitor, Keilani stays. She doesn't ask questions. She doesn't make demands. She doesn't leave."*

*"Jesus, Gideon."*

*"Don't look at me like that. It's practical. The girl's brainstem function has been gone since the second week. I had three neurologists confirm it. She's dead, Marcus. Legally, medically, every way that matters. But the machines keep running, and Keilani keeps hoping, and I get exactly what I need."*

*"Which is?"*

*"A wife who doesn't talk back."* A low chuckle. *"Silent. Grateful. Completely under control. You know how rare that is in this city? I could've married any of the women my mother kept throwing at me. Socialites, heiresses, all of them. But they would've wanted things. Opinions. Input. Keilani just wants her sister to keep breathing. So I make sure she does. It's the best investment I ever made."*

The recording ended.

Camilla sat very still.

Then she smiled.

She played it again. This time she closed her eyes and listened to the cadence of his voice, the casual cruelty of it, the way he said *investment* like he was talking about real estate.

She'd known Gideon was cold. That was part of the appeal. But this — this was something else.

This was leverage.

She opened her messages and scrolled to Gideon's name. Her thumb hovered over the screen.

For two years, she'd played the role he wanted. The mistress who didn't ask for too much. Who showed up when he called and left when he was done. Who smiled at his friends and kept her mouth shut at his galas and never, ever mentioned the word *wife* unless he brought it up first.

She'd done everything right.

And he still hadn't given her the ring.

Every time she asked — carefully, lightly, like it didn't matter — he deflected. *Not yet. Soon. Let me handle Keilani first.*

But he wasn't handling Keilani.

He was keeping her.

Camilla had assumed it was sentiment. Some leftover guilt, maybe, or a stubborn refusal to admit failure. She'd been wrong.

It wasn't sentiment.

It was control.

And now she understood: Gideon would never divorce Keilani. Not willingly. Not as long as the system he'd built kept working.

Which meant Camilla had to break it.

She looked back at the building. At the fifth-floor window where she knew Macie's room was, though she couldn't see inside from here.

Keilani visited every Sunday. Two to four, like clockwork. She brought magazines. Lotion. A speaker that played the same playlist every time.

Camilla had watched her once, from the hallway, through the gap in the door.

She'd looked so small, sitting beside the bed, holding a hand that couldn't hold back.

Pathetic, Camilla had thought.

Now, she thought: *useful.*

She opened a new message. Not to Gideon.

To Keilani.

She attached the audio file, then typed:

*Thought you should hear this. You deserve to know the truth. — Someone who actually cares*

She read it twice. Deleted the last sentence. It was too much. She didn't need to pretend to be kind.

She retyped:

*Thought you should hear this.*

Short. Clean. Devastating.

She hit send.

Then she leaned back in her seat, set her phone on the dashboard, and waited.

Somewhere in Manhattan, Keilani's phone would light up. She'd see the message. She'd press play.

And the perfect, silent wife Gideon had spent five years engineering would finally break.

Camilla smiled at the windshield.

She didn't feel guilty.

She felt free.
