My Husband Used My Baby to Save His Mistress's Son Chapter 1

The laundry basket sat on the bed. I folded a white shirt. Then another. The penthouse was quiet. Ryker was in Connecticut. At least that's what I was told. He'd been at the rehabilitation clinic for three days. The doctors said he needed specialized treatment. I didn't ask questions anymore.

I pressed my thumb into my palm. Six months pregnant and folding laundry. That was my life.

The tablet on the nightstand buzzed. I glanced at it. A notification. Cloud sync complete. New video file downloaded. I set down the shirt and picked up the device. It was Ryker's secondary tablet. The one linked to his London accounts. He'd left it behind when he went to Connecticut. I'd used it before to check his medical files when his primary phone died.

I tapped the notification. The video player opened. A living room I didn't recognize. Bright. Expensive. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a city skyline. Not New York. The furniture was modern. Cream-colored. A child's toy—a red truck—sat abandoned on a rug.

Then Ryker walked into frame.

Walked.

Two legs. No wheelchair. No cane. No limp. He moved easily. Fluidly. He bent down and scooped a toddler into his arms. A little boy with dark curls. Ryker lifted him onto his shoulders. The boy laughed. Ryker laughed too. A sound I hadn't heard in five years.

A woman entered the frame. Slim. Elegant. Long dark hair. She wore a white silk blouse and tailored pants. She touched Ryker's arm. He turned to her and smiled. The kind of smile I used to imagine he'd give me one day. She leaned in and kissed his cheek. Another child—a little girl—ran past them, chasing the boy.

I couldn't breathe.

The woman said something I couldn't hear. Ryker nodded. Then his voice came through clearly. "The cord blood transfer is scheduled for next month. Once we have what we need from her, I'll start the divorce."

The tablet slipped in my hands. I caught it. Watched the video again. Then a third time. On the third viewing, I noticed the details. The family photos on the mantel. Ryker and the woman. Ryker and the children. A life. A whole life. Not mine.

I set the tablet down. My hands were shaking. I pressed my thumb into my palm. Harder. The baby kicked. I looked down at my swollen belly. Not a child. A resource. Cord blood. That's all this was. That's all I was.

I picked up my phone. Dialed Ryker's number. It rang twice.

"Sofia." His voice was neutral. Careful.

"I know everything."

Silence. Long. Heavy. I could hear him breathing.

"Stay where you are," he said finally. "We'll discuss this rationally."

I hung up. Stared at the phone. Then I stood. Walked to the closet. Pulled out a bag. I packed methodically. Clothes. Documents. My parents' photograph—the one I kept in the back of my current book. I moved with focus. Clarity. For the first time in five years, I knew exactly what I was doing.

I was leaving.

Two hours later, the elevator doors opened. Ryker stepped out. He walked across the marble foyer. No wheelchair. No pretense. His gait was smooth. Confident. He'd been walking the entire time.

He stopped in front of me. I stood by the door. Bag in hand.

"Let me explain," he said.

"You can walk."

"Yes."

"For how long?"

"Five years."

The air left my lungs. "Five years."

He nodded. "I had to. For Carmen. For our children. The Shaw family wouldn't accept her. This was the only way."

"Carmen."

"My partner. In London. We have twins. A boy and a girl. The boy has a blood disorder. He needs a transplant. Your baby—" He gestured at my stomach. "The cord blood is a perfect match. We ran the tests during the IVF."

I stared at him. "You planned this."

"I honored my family's debt to your parents. You've been cared for. Provided for. This marriage gave you security. And now you're giving us what we need. It's fair."

"Fair."

"I'll make sure you're compensated. Generously. Once the baby is born and the cord blood is secured, we can finalize the divorce. You'll never want for anything."

I picked up my bag. Walked toward the elevator. Ryker pulled out his phone. Made a call. "She's leaving. Stop her."

I reached the lobby. Two security guards stepped in front of me. Men I knew. Davis. Chen. I'd brought them coffee last week. Smiled. Asked about their families.

"Mrs. Shaw," Davis said quietly. "We need you to come back upstairs."

"No."

Chen took my arm. His grip was firm. "Please don't make this difficult."

I pulled back. Davis took my other arm. They walked me to the elevator. I tried to twist free. Chen's hand tightened. The elevator doors closed. My phone buzzed. Chen took it from my hand. "Mr. Shaw's orders."

They brought me back to the penthouse. Ryker was waiting. He gestured down the hall. "The medical suite. You'll stay there until after the delivery. It's for your safety and the baby's."

"This is kidnapping."

"This is protection." He nodded to the guards. They walked me down the hall. Opened a door. A hospital room. Bed. Monitors. IV stand. They guided me inside. The door closed. I heard the lock click.

I sat on the bed. Pressed my thumb into my palm. The baby kicked again. I looked down. Whispered. "I'm sorry."

The next morning, a doctor came. Not my OB. A man I'd never seen. He checked my vitals. Spoke to a nurse. Never looked at my face. "Pregnancy is progressing normally. Cord blood extraction is scheduled for thirty-two weeks. We'll induce if necessary."

I said nothing. He left. The door locked again.

Ryker appeared that afternoon. Stood in the doorway. "You'll be comfortable here. Everything you need will be provided. Once this is over, you can go wherever you want. I'll make sure of it."

I looked at him. This man I'd spent five years caring for. Loving. Believing in.

"I don't know you," I said.

He paused. Then nodded. "No. You don't."

The door closed. I heard his footsteps fade down the hall. I lay back on the bed. Stared at the ceiling. And pressed my thumb into my palm until it hurt.
