After My Husband Helped His Mistress Destroy My Career Chapter 1

I found it on a Tuesday.

Spencer had left his backup phone on the nightstand—the old one he claimed he kept for archived project files. I needed a contractor's number from two years ago. That was all. I wasn't looking for anything.

The album was buried under three folders, locked behind a six-digit code I cracked on the second try. Our anniversary. He'd used our anniversary.

I didn't make a sound.

The photos loaded slowly, one by one. Tiffany in a hotel bathroom mirror, her hair loose, wearing Spencer's shirt. Tiffany laughing at a table I didn't recognize, her hand over Spencer's. Spencer's face—a face I had memorized through two years of hospital visits and physical therapy sessions and 3 AM bone broth—tilted toward her like a plant toward light.

The messages were worse than the photos.

I read them all. Every one.

In one thread from last March, Tiffany had written: *miss you. how's your little nurse?*

Spencer had sent back a laughing emoji. Just that. A laughing emoji.

He never corrected her.

I put the phone back exactly where I'd found it. Screen down. Slightly angled toward the lamp. I sat on the edge of our bed in the dark and I didn't move for a long time.

I didn't cry. I noticed that, distantly—the absence of tears, like a fuse that had simply gone quiet instead of blowing.

What I felt was more like the moment after you touch something very hot. The split second before the pain arrives, when your body already knows but your mind is still catching up.

I sat there until the city outside went from loud to quiet to the particular stillness that belongs to 3 AM. Then I got up, washed my face, and went to bed.

I didn't sleep.

---

The nausea had been going on for two weeks. I'd been telling myself it was stress.

The clinic was on the Upper West Side, clean and quiet, with a waiting room that smelled like recycled air and bad coffee. I sat in a plastic chair and stared at a poster about prenatal vitamins while a nurse read my results back to me in a calm, practiced voice.

Pregnant. Six weeks.

I held the paper printout in both hands on the subway home. The train was crowded. A woman across from me was reading something on her phone and laughing softly to herself. A kid in a stroller was asleep with his mouth open.

I looked at the paper. Then I looked at the window, at my own reflection moving through the dark tunnel.

Two facts. One body. One decision.

I knew before I reached my stop.

I would not bring a child into this. I would not hand a baby a foundation made of lies and call it a family. I had spent five years building on sand for Spencer. I would not do it again. Not for this. Not for anyone.

That night I sat at the kitchen table with my laptop open and drafted the divorce papers. The apartment was silent. Spencer was at a client dinner. I worked until the sky outside began to lighten, and when I was done I closed the laptop and made myself a cup of coffee I didn't drink.

---

I confronted him on a Thursday morning.

I set his phone on the breakfast bar between us, the album open to the first photo. I didn't say anything. I just watched his face.

He looked at the screen. Then he looked at me.

"Stella." His voice was careful. Measured. "This isn't what you're making it into."

"I'm not making it into anything," I said. "I'm looking at what it is."

"You went through my phone."

"You left it out."

"That's—" He exhaled. Ran a hand through his hair. "Tiffany is a friend. You've always had a problem with her, and I've never understood why. This is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about, Stella. You see something and you build a whole story around it."

I looked at him for a long moment. I thought about the laughing emoji. I thought about *your little nurse.*

"Okay," I said.

He blinked. He'd expected more. He'd prepared for more.

"Okay?" he repeated.

"Okay," I said again, and I picked up my coffee cup and went to the window.

That night I locked myself in the bathroom and sat on the cold tile floor with my back against the tub. I stayed there for an hour. I counted the grout lines in the floor. I pressed my palms flat against the tile and felt the cold move up through my wrists.

Then I stood up, washed my face, and went to bed.

I knew what I was going to do.

---

I went to the clinic alone on a Monday morning. I told no one.

Afterward, I took a cab back to the apartment. The signed divorce papers were already printed. I left them on the kitchen counter, weighted down by Spencer's spare keys.

I packed one suitcase. Clothes, my notebooks, my laptop. The small framed print from my first solo exhibition that hung above my desk—the only thing on the walls that had ever been entirely mine.

Before I zipped the bag, I opened my jewelry box and took out a thin gold cuff bracelet. I'd bought it three years ago with my first real freelance paycheck, the week I landed the Mercer Street commission. I'd bought it for myself, because I wanted to, because I had earned it.

I slid it onto my left wrist. It settled over the burn scar—the one Spencer's elbow had put there at 3 AM during his second year of recovery, when he'd knocked the pot of bone broth off the stove in a fit of frustration and I hadn't moved fast enough.

I didn't wear the bracelet to cover the scar.

I wore it because I had chosen it. Because it was mine.

I picked up my suitcase and walked out.

I didn't look back at the kitchen counter. I didn't need to.

The papers said everything I had left to say.
