Chapter 2

"Rebecca needed a safety net today, Claire." Adam dropped a greasy pizza box onto the kitchen island. The cardboard slapped against the marble. "You have a husband. You have a child. You have a home. Why is it so hard for you to show a little grace?"

I wiped a smear of tomato sauce off the counter, stopping my hand right in front of him. "I do not care if she needed a meal. I care that you used my mother's heirloom silver and two days of my labor to play the hero."

"It's just food," he scoffed, crossing his arms. "I'm replacing it right now. Pepperoni and cheese. Problem solved."

"You stole."

"I shared."

A small pair of footsteps padded into the kitchen. Finn peeked out from behind Adam's leg, clutching a plastic firetruck. "Aunt Rebecca doesn't have a family anymore, Mommy."

I dropped the sponge into the sink. I crouched down, bringing my face level with my son's. "Finn, if Daddy took your favorite firetruck and gave it to a boy who didn't have toys, would that be a good gift?"

Finn hugged the red plastic tighter against his chest. "No. It's my truck."

"Exactly," I said, keeping my voice level. "So who cooked the turkey? And whose silver forks did Daddy take?"

Finn blinked. He looked up at his father, his brow furrowed. He didn't have an answer.

Adam stepped forward, pulling Finn behind him. "Stop dragging a four-year-old into adult issues just to score points."

He glared at me, blind to the fact that he was the one who had taught our son my boundaries did not exist.

At nine the next morning, I sat across from Mr. Gable in his downtown office. The leather chair squeaked as I leaned forward.

I pushed the signed retainer agreement across the glass desk. "I do not want a custody war, Mr. Gable."

The lawyer adjusted his glasses. "If you want temporary custody orders, we can request them. But the court will focus on Finn’s best interests, not on who was wrong in the marriage."

"I want a joint parenting plan," I replied, keeping my voice firm. "We will share school and medical access. Emergencies warrant a phone call. Everything else goes through a co-parenting app. Finn will split his weeks between Adam's house and my new apartment above Bennett Table."

Mr. Gable nodded, making a note in the file. "Clean. Structured. And much easier to enforce."

By noon, I had opened a new personal checking account at the bank down the street. I reclaimed my company ledgers from the shared safe. I retrieved my mother's original recipe binders.

When I hauled the first empty cardboard box into the master bedroom, Adam was leaning against the doorframe. He held a cup of coffee, watching me toss sweaters into the carton.

"You are tearing apart our family over Thanksgiving dinner," he said, taking a slow sip.

I pulled a stack of jeans from the shelf. "I am not leaving over a meal."

"You're packing your bags because I gave away a turkey." He laughed, a dry, bitter sound. "Do you hear how insane that sounds? I tried to help a friend."

"You helped yourself to my things," I corrected, dropping the clothes into the box. "You took my food. You took my mother's silver. You paraded our son on a livestream to look like a savior."

"Rebecca was crying, Claire. She was alone."

I taped the carton shut, the adhesive ripping with a sharp screech. "I am leaving because you still think you have the right to take. You think because I am your wife, everything I create belongs to you."

Adam pushed off the doorframe and walked over to my dresser. He set his mug down. He picked up the mahogany box Rebecca had dropped off an hour ago. He flipped the lid open.

I stared at the velvet lining. The carving knife rested in its slot. The spoons lined up perfectly.

But the dinner fork bearing the engraved letter B was bent at a harsh angle, the metal tines twisted outward. The handle looked warped, completely stripped of its original shape.

"One of Rebecca’s nieces was running around after dinner," Adam muttered, rubbing the back of his neck. "She tripped. It was an accident."

"You knew about this last night," I stated, staring at the ruined metal. "When you came home demanding I order a pizza, you already knew."

"I didn't tell you last night because I knew you would blow it out of proportion." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, modern jewelry box, setting it on the mattress. "I bought a brand-new set this morning. Pure silver. Better quality than the old ones. Silver is silver, Claire. It's just metal."

I stared at the pristine, untouched box. I pushed it back toward him. It slid off the mattress and hit the floor with a dull thud.

"My mother didn't leave me market value," I said, picking up the heirloom fork. "She left me her history. Her memories."

"I'm offering you a better set!"

"You will find a professional silversmith." I stepped closer, forcing him to meet my eyes. "You will pay for the restoration. And you don't ever get to decide what replaces my things."

Adam stared at the box on the floor, finally realizing a credit card could not replace a stolen memory.

A small sniffle broke the silence in the room.

Finn stood in the hallway, tears spilling down his cheeks, soaking the collar of his shirt. His small hands gripped the doorframe. "Mommy, are you moving away because I went to Aunt Rebecca's house?"

My chest tightened. I knelt and pulled him into a tight hug.

"No, sweetie," I whispered, wiping his wet cheek with my thumb. "Adults are responsible for their own marriages. You didn't break anything. You will never lose me over a mistake."

Finn buried his face in my shoulder. His little body shook. "But I told the camera she was my Thanksgiving mom. I'm sorry."

"You don't need to apologize," I said, rubbing his back. "Daddy told you to say those things. That was Daddy's mistake, not yours."

"Then stay here," Finn sobbed. "Please."

I held him tighter. "I am not leaving you, sweetheart. I am moving out of Daddy’s house. Those are different things."

"I do not want two houses."

"I know." I kissed his damp hair. "Your school stays the same, and I will still be your mother every day, no matter which house you sleep in."

Adam stepped closer. "Listen to him, Claire. He is asking you to keep the family together."

I looked over Finn’s shoulder. "Do not use our son as your argument."

Finn pulled back and wiped his nose on his sleeve. "Can my firetruck come to your new house?"

"It is your truck," I said. "You decide where it goes."

His fingers closed around the toy. He nodded slowly.

I stood, placed the bent silver fork inside my tote, and lifted the first box. Adam did not offer to carry it. I did not ask.

By sunset, the first load was in the apartment above Bennett Table.
