Chapter 2

I drove to Alayna's office without calling first, my hands steady on the wheel for the first time in weeks. The Manhattan traffic parted around me like I was driving with purpose, and maybe I was. The sleek glass tower of her law firm reflected the afternoon sun, a mirror to the life I'd stepped away from seven years ago. I parked in the underground garage and rode the elevator up, not bothering to check my reflection. I knew what I looked like—a woman who had finally stopped performing contentment.

Alayna's assistant tried to stop me at the door, but I walked past her desk with the kind of quiet authority I'd buried under years of 'yes, dear' and 'whatever you think is best.' I didn't knock. I simply pushed open her office door.

She was sitting behind her desk, a triple espresso untouched beside her laptop. One look at my face and she was on her feet, the chair rolling backward with a soft whir.

'Selah,' she said, my name a question and an answer all at once.

I sat down in the chair across from her and began to speak. The words came out measured, precise, like I was delivering closing arguments. I told her about the boba order—'light ice, quarter sweet, oat milk'—and watched her lips thin into a hard line. I told her about Daisy in Cameron's hoodie, about the mug that said 'Professor's Favorite,' about the pasta he'd cooked for another woman in our kitchen.

Alayna didn't interrupt, didn't offer platitudes or outrage on my behalf. She simply listened, her dark eyes tracking every word, filing them away like evidence. When I finished, she reached into her desk drawer and pulled out a manila folder, worn at the edges from handling.

'I updated them six months ago,' she said, sliding the folder across the polished surface. 'I knew you'd need them eventually.'

I opened the folder. Divorce papers, every 'i' dotted, every 't' crossed. Ready and waiting.

'You knew,' I said, not a question.

'I've been watching him dim your light for years,' she replied, her voice sharp as a blade. 'I just needed you to see it too.'

I exhaled, the first full breath I'd taken in days, maybe years.

Meanwhile, across campus, Cameron was already rewriting our story. I could picture him in his office, straightening his tie as he leaned against his desk, surrounded by sympathetic colleagues. 'Selah's always been... fragile,' he would say, his voice carrying just the right note of concerned disappointment. 'She couldn't handle the pressures of academic life.'

His graduate students would nod, already gossiping in the hallways. 'She couldn't handle being married to a genius,' one would whisper to another, never knowing that the genius had been me all along.

Cameron settled into his new narrative with practiced ease, never once considering that I might be building something without him. He was too busy playing the wounded party, too convinced of his own victimhood to see the woman walking away from him wasn't broken—she was finally free.

Two weeks later, I stepped off the plane in Los Angeles, the California sun hitting my face like a benediction. The car Margaret Osei had sent was waiting, a sleek black sedan that whispered 'power' in every line. I slid into the backseat and felt the weight of the last seven years begin to lift.

Margaret was waiting for me at the restaurant, a woman in her sixties with steel in her spine and wisdom in her eyes. She stood as I approached the table, her smile warm but her handshake firm.

'Selah Wells,' she said, 'I've been waiting for this dinner for years.'

We talked for two hours, the kind of conversation that felt like coming home. She asked about my research, my vision, my plans—questions Cameron had stopped asking years ago. When dessert came, she leaned forward.

'The offer was always yours,' she said plainly. 'I simply waited for you to remember that.'

I accepted over coffee, my hands steady around the cup. The next morning, I walked into the glass-walled corner office on the 40th floor, the city sprawling beneath me like a kingdom. My assistant had left a box on my desk—my personal effects from storage.

I opened it and pulled out my national debate championship trophy, the one Cameron had made me pack away because it 'made his own credentials look smaller by comparison.' I unwrapped it carefully, feeling the weight of it in my hands, then placed it on the shelf in full view of the door.

Let them all see what I'd accomplished before I'd ever met him. Let them all remember who I'd been before I'd tried to become what he wanted.

The trophy caught the morning light, and I caught my reflection in the glass—a woman I was just beginning to recognize again.
