Chapter 3

The conference room fell silent when I finished speaking. Twenty executives, all older than me, all men except for two, stared at the projection screen where I'd just outlined the licensing deal that would expand Apex Meridian's reach into three new markets. The numbers were clean. The strategy was airtight. I'd spent seventy-two hours building this proposal, fueled by black coffee and the muscle memory of a mind that had been asleep for seven years.

'Questions?' I asked.

Silence. Then the CFO, a silver-haired man named Richard who'd been skeptical of my appointment, leaned back in his chair. 'When can we sign?'

I closed my laptop. 'This afternoon. Their team is waiting for our call.'

The room erupted. Handshakes, congratulations, the kind of energy that crackles when money meets vision. I stood at the head of the table and felt it wash over me—not the praise, but the proof. Proof that I was still the woman who'd won a national championship on the strength of her arguments. Proof that Cameron's narrative about my 'fragility' was a story he'd told himself to justify his own mediocrity.

I excused myself and walked back to my office, the floor-to-ceiling windows framing the city below. My assistant had left a stack of messages on my desk, but the only one that mattered was the email notification glowing on my screen.

Margaret's message was one line: 'That's the woman I hired.'

I read it twice. Then I poured myself another cup of coffee—black, no room for anything softening it—and sat down at my desk. The trophy on the shelf caught the morning light, throwing a small shadow across the wall. I stared at it for a long moment, then opened my legal pad.

The pages were filled with entries I'd made over seven years, each one dated and recorded in my debate-trained handwriting. I flipped backward through the months, reading my own testimony like evidence.

*October 14th, three years ago.* I'd been sick with the flu, fever spiking to 103°F. I'd texted Cameron asking if he could come home early, just to sit with me. His reply came two hours later: 'Big faculty dinner tonight. Dean's going to be there. Can't miss it. There's soup in the pantry.'

I remembered lying in bed, shivering under two blankets, listening to the silence of the apartment. I remembered heating the soup myself, hands shaking as I poured it into a bowl. I remembered thinking, *He'll make it up to me. He's just busy.*

I turned the page.

*January 9th, two years ago.* The fertility treatments had started. Cameron insisted we try, said a baby would 'complete our family,' though he never once asked what I wanted. The injections had to be administered at the same time every night—2 a.m., the doctor said, to align with my cycle. I set an alarm. I woke up alone in the dark and walked to the bathroom, the tile cold under my bare feet. I pulled the syringe from the fridge, hands steady despite the fear crawling up my throat.

In the next room, I could hear the tinny sound of gunfire through Cameron's headphones. He was playing video games, his back to the door, his world contained in a screen. I stood there for a long moment, needle in hand, waiting for him to turn around. He never did.

I administered the injection myself, wincing at the sting, and climbed back into bed. Cameron came to bed an hour later, smelling like energy drinks and the faint musk of unwashed clothes. He fell asleep in seconds. I lay awake until dawn.

I turned another page.

*March 22nd, last year.* My birthday. I woke up expecting—something. A card, maybe. Breakfast. The kind of small gesture that says, *I see you.* Instead, Cameron was already dressed, his suitcase by the door.

'Boston symposium,' he said, kissing my forehead without meeting my eyes. 'I'll be back Sunday.'

'It's my birthday,' I said quietly.

He paused, one hand on the doorknob. 'Right. Happy birthday. We'll celebrate when I get back.'

We never did.

I found out later, through a photo tagged on the university's social media, that Daisy had gone with him. They were standing together in front of a conference banner, her hand resting lightly on his arm, both of them smiling like they'd just won something.

I closed the legal pad and set it down on my desk. The entries went on for pages—years of small erasures, moments when I'd told myself *it's fine, he's just stressed, marriage is compromise.* But compromise was supposed to be mutual. What I'd been doing was disappearing.

My phone buzzed. A text from Alayna: 'Saw the news. You're a goddamn legend.'

I smiled, the first real smile in weeks, and typed back: 'Just getting started.'

Outside my window, the sun was setting over Los Angeles, painting the sky in shades of gold and fire. I stood and walked to the glass, pressing one palm against the cool surface. Somewhere across the country, Cameron was probably telling another colleague about his 'difficult' ex-wife, rewriting our history to suit his wounded ego.

Let him.

I had work to do.
