Chapter 3

I sit at my kitchen table in the dark. The laptop screen is the only light. My coffee went cold an hour ago. I don't remember making it.

The New York State corporate registry page stares back at me. Axiom Technologies, Inc. Date of incorporation: March 15th, eight years ago. Original registered agent: Alessia Marie Torres.

My name. My signature. My filing.

I click through to the amended certificates. There are five of them, tracking the company's growth. Series A funding. Series B. Address changes. Board appointments. But the original incorporation document never changed. My name stayed right there at the bottom.

I open another tab. SEC filings. Pre-IPO disclosures.

Axiom Technologies' flagship product: A predictive analytics platform using proprietary machine learning algorithms to optimize supply chain logistics.

I know those algorithms. I wrote them.

It was a Saturday morning in our old apartment. The one with heat. Andrew brought me coffee in bed and asked if I could help him with a technical problem. Just a quick consultation, he said. He made it sound small. Temporary. A favor between partners.

I spent three weeks building that algorithm. Nights and weekends. I gave it to him on a USB drive with a ribbon tied around it. He kissed me and said I was brilliant. Said we were building something together.

I never asked him to add my name to the patent. Never thought I needed to.

My thumb moves across my wrist. Slow circles.

This was not an accident.

Andrew kept my name on the founding documents for the same reason he kept me broke and exhausted. If regulators ever came looking—if the SEC ever questioned the algorithm's provenance or the company's financial engineering—I would be the name on the paperwork. The original founder. The technical architect. The legal signatory.

I would be the one in handcuffs.

He built me an exit. Just not the kind I thought.

I close the laptop. Sit in the dark. Something cold and clear settles deeper.

I am not his victim anymore. I am his liability.

And he has no idea how dangerous that makes me.

---

The showing is at eleven. A young couple from Connecticut, pre-approved for thirty-two million. Marceline meets me in the lobby wearing a cream cashmere dress that probably costs more than my car. She looks radiant. Happy.

"I'm so glad you're handling this," she says as we ride the elevator up. "You make everything feel easy."

I smile. "That's my job."

The couple loves the light. The park views. The custom closets. They take photos. Ask about maintenance fees. Marceline answers some questions. I answer others. We move through the apartment like choreographed dancers.

While Marceline shows them the rooftop terrace access, I step into Andrew's study.

The room smells like leather and expensive cologne. His desk is neat. Organized. A laptop sits closed in the center. I don't touch it. Too risky.

But the filing cabinet against the wall is unlocked.

I pull out my phone. Open the camera. Start photographing.

Bank statements. Wire transfer receipts. Corporate documents with signatures I recognize. Shell companies with addresses in Delaware and the Cayman Islands. Money moving in circles—from my account to Andrew's business account to holding companies with names like Archway Capital LLC and Sterling Ventures Group, then back out again to pay for this apartment, Marceline's trust fund, the Hermès bags.

My money. Laundered through a maze. Cleaned. Rebranded. Turned into someone else's life.

I hear footsteps in the hallway. I close the drawer. Slip my phone into my pocket. Step back into the hall just as Marceline appears.

"There you are," she says. "They want to put in an offer."

"That's wonderful," I say.

I spend the next hour walking them through comps and contract terms. My voice never wavers. My smile stays warm.

When they leave, Marceline hugs me. Actually hugs me.

"Thank you," she whispers. "You're making this so much less stressful."

I hug her back. Pat her shoulder. Feel the baby move between us.

"Anytime," I say.

---

Diana Reyes talks with her mouth full. We're at the diner on Forty-Third, splitting a plate of fries neither of us should be eating.

"So this contractor," she says, waving a fry for emphasis, "signs this whole service agreement. The client thinks everything's locked in. Then three days later, she goes to file it with her attorney and the signature line is completely blank."

"Blank," I repeat.

Diana nods. "Disappearing ink. Some kind of specialty pen. The guy used it on purpose, obviously. Fraud case now. But can you imagine? You think you have a signed contract and then—poof."

I set down my coffee. "Where would someone even get something like that?"

"I don't know. Online, probably? Diana & Sons or some spy-gadget website." She laughs. "Why? You planning a heist?"

"Just curious," I say.

That night I sit on my mattress with my laptop. I search for forty minutes before I find it. A specialty supplier. Industrial-grade disappearing ink pens. Signature disappears completely within seventy-two hours. No residue. No trace.

I add one to my cart.

Then I search for cameras. The kind you can't see. I find a brooch. Silver. Ordinary-looking. Pinhole lens embedded in the clasp. Records video and audio. Uploads directly to cloud storage.

I add it to my cart.

I stare at the total. Two hundred and forty dollars.

I think about Andrew on his knees in the parking garage. About Marceline's hand on her belly. About my name on those corporate documents, waiting.

I enter my credit card number.

I click purchase.

The confirmation email arrives thirty seconds later.

I lie back on my mattress. Stare at the ceiling. My thumb moves across my wrist.

I am building something now. Just for me.

And Andrew has no idea it's coming.
