Chapter 1

The car smelled like leather and Ethan's cologne, the same one he'd worn on our wedding day. I used to love that smell. Now it just made my stomach turn.

I kept my eyes on the window. The city slid by gray and fast, all glass and steel, nothing like the pine trees I'd stared at for a year. Ethan reached over and touched my knee. I flinched. Not fake, not really. My body remembered things my mind had to pretend to forget.

"Almost home, Bella," he said. His voice was gentle, careful, like he was talking to something breakable. Which was exactly the point.

I didn't answer. I just blinked at him, slow, like the words took a long trip to reach me.

He studied my face the way he used to study witnesses on the stand. I let him look. I gave him nothing — no spark, no flicker, just glass. After a moment he relaxed his jaw and turned back to the road. He believed it. A year of sedatives had done exactly what he wanted. Or so he thought.

The penthouse hadn't changed. Same marble floors, same view of the park, same cold air-conditioned hush. Ethan led me past our old bedroom — the one with the balcony, the one where we used to fall asleep tangled together — and stopped at a guest room instead.

"You'll be more comfortable in here," he said. "For now. Until you're settled."

I nodded once and let him close the door.

Alone, I sat on the edge of the unfamiliar bed and pressed my thumbnail into my palm until it stung. A small, private pain. It kept me still. It kept me here, in my body, in this moment, instead of screaming.

*You were always too smart for him, sweetheart,* my mother's voice said, dry and warm at the same time. *Prove it.*

I almost smiled.

I dug into the lining of my coat — the coat Margaret Diaz had quietly slipped a prepaid phone into months ago, before I was even discharged, without a word, without ever meeting my eyes when she did it — and I turned it on. One bar of signal. Enough.

I typed: *I'm home. It begins.*

I hit send before I could think too hard about it, then buried the phone back in the lining and lay down on top of the comforter, staring at the ceiling, waiting for my heart to slow down.

Cadence Perkins moved in three days later.

I heard her before I saw her — high heels clicking on marble, a laugh too bright for the room. She came with two suitcases and a makeup case the size of a carry-on, and Ethan carried her bags himself, which he had never done for me, not even on our honeymoon.

"This is going to be so good for Bella," she said, standing in the kitchen like she'd already measured it for new curtains. "She needs a woman around. Someone soft. Someone who understands."

I stood in the doorway in my robe, hair unwashed, eyes low. I let her look at me the way people look at furniture.

By the end of the week she'd rearranged the spice rack, replaced my mother's orchids with white lilies she liked better, and settled into the armchair by the window — my mother's chair, the one I'd had reupholstered in soft gray after she died — like it had always been hers.

"Comfortable, isn't it?" she said, catching me looking. She smiled, slow and sweet, the way you'd smile at a child who'd wandered somewhere she shouldn't be. "You don't mind, do you, Bella?"

I shook my head. Said nothing. Filed it away.

The stolen hours came when Ethan left for the firm and Cadence left for her blowout appointments. I'd lock the bathroom door, run the water, and text Riley from the tub's edge, phone wrapped in a hand towel in case anyone knocked.

*Got the dashcam footage from the retired cop,* she wrote. *Got the forged reports. Got Hale's payment records — cash transfers, three of them, right after the accident. It's good. It's not enough.*

*What do you need,* I typed.

*Him. On record. Admitting it. Financial trails prove opportunity. I need proof of intent. Something that puts his own voice in the room.*

I closed my eyes. Down the hall, I could hear Ethan's low laugh through the wall, Cadence's answering giggle, ice clinking in a glass. The sound of two people who thought they'd already won.

*Give me time,* I wrote back. *He talks when he thinks no one is listening.*

A pause. Then: *You're not alone in this. Not anymore.*

I turned off the phone and sat in the quiet, water going cold around my ankles, and for the first time in a year, something in my chest didn't feel like grief.

It felt like a countdown.
