Chapter 2

The brooch appeared at breakfast.

I saw it the moment Cadence walked into the dining room. My mother's pearl brooch, pinned to the lapel of a cream blazer like it was nothing. Like it was hers.

My chest went tight. My hands stopped moving. The coffee cup I'd been holding hung suspended halfway to my mouth.

Cadence sat down across from me, slow and deliberate. She reached up and touched the brooch with two fingers, stroking the pearls the way you'd pet something small and helpless. Her eyes met mine.

"Do you like it?" she asked. Her voice was bright, innocent. "Ethan said I could borrow it. He said you wouldn't mind."

Something in me snapped.

I didn't think. I just moved. I lunged across the table, knocking the coffee cup sideways, my hands reaching for her throat, for the brooch, for anything I could claw. My fingers caught the edge of the blazer and I pulled, hard, nails scraping fabric.

"Give it back," I heard myself say. My voice didn't sound like mine. "Give it back, that's *hers*, that's my mother's—"

Cadence screamed.

Footsteps pounded down the hall. Ethan burst through the doorway and his hands locked around my shoulders. He yanked me backward so hard I stumbled. My hip hit the edge of the table. Then he shoved, and I went down, palms smacking hardwood, knees cracking against the floor.

Pain shot up my legs. I gasped.

Ethan crouched over me, his face white, his jaw locked. "You're having an episode," he said. His voice was low and controlled, the courtroom voice. "Don't make me send you back, Bella. Don't make me do it."

I looked up at him. At Cadence standing behind him, one hand pressed to her chest, eyes wide and wounded. At the brooch still pinned to her blazer, my mother's pearls glowing soft in the morning light.

I let my body go slack. I let the tears come. I pressed my forehead to the floor and whispered, "I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me. I'm sorry."

Ethan exhaled. His hand touched the back of my head, awkward, uncertain. "It's okay," he said quietly. "You're okay. We're going to get you help."

I stayed down until he lifted me. I let him guide me back to my room. I sat on the bed with my hands folded in my lap and stared at nothing while he made a phone call in the hallway, voice muffled through the door.

Inside, I carved another line into the tally I kept in my head. One more mark. One more reason.

*You see it now, don't you, sweetheart?* my mother's voice said, dry and certain. *You see exactly who they are.*

I closed my eyes and nodded.

Dr. Frost arrived two hours later.

He came with his black leather bag and his thin smile, the same one he'd worn every time he'd administered an injection at the facility. Ethan stood beside him in the living room, arms crossed, while I sat on the couch in my robe.

"Arabella," Frost said gently. "Your husband tells me you've had a difficult morning."

I looked at my hands. Said nothing.

"I think we need to adjust your medication," he continued. He pulled a prescription pad from his bag, scribbled something, tore off the sheet. "A higher dosage. Just temporarily. To help you stay calm."

Ethan took the paper, studied it, nodded. "Will this help?"

"It should stabilize her," Frost said. He handed Ethan a new bottle from his bag, white label, my name printed in block letters. "Two in the morning, two at night. Make sure she takes them with food."

I nodded when they both looked at me. "Okay," I whispered.

Ethan walked Frost to the door. I heard them murmuring, heard the door close. When Ethan came back, he held the bottle out to me and shook two pills into my palm.

"Take them now," he said.

I put them in my mouth. I reached for the glass of water on the side table. I swallowed, throat moving visibly. Ethan watched my face, watched my hands, watched me set the glass down.

He didn't check my cheek. He never did.

I kept the pills tucked against my gums until he left the room. Then I walked to the bathroom, locked the door, and spat them into my palm. I flushed them and ran the water, staring at my reflection.

Another blind spot. Another crack in his armor.

By the end of the week, Cadence had claimed half my closet.

I came out of my room one morning and found her in the hallway, wearing my black Dior blazer, the one my mother had bought me for my twenty-fifth birthday. She smoothed the lapels and smiled.

"Ethan said I could borrow a few things," she said. "You don't mind, do you? You're not really wearing them right now."

I shook my head. Looked down.

"Good," she said brightly. She walked past me into the kitchen.

Later, I sat at the dining table while Cadence and Ethan talked over coffee. She gestured with her hands, animated, laughing. "I really think she's making progress," she said. "Don't you think, Ethan? She seems calmer."

"She does," Ethan agreed. He glanced at me, then back at Cadence. "The new medication is helping."

Cadence nodded. "I'm glad. It's hard, you know, watching someone struggle like that. But I think having me here is good for her. She needs a woman around. Someone patient."

I sat three feet away. They spoke about me like I wasn't there. Like I was a plant. Like I was furniture.

I folded my hands in my lap. I kept my face blank. I let them think whatever they wanted.

And inside, I memorized every word.
