Chapter 3

It happened halfway through dessert.

Brinley touched her throat. Just a light touch. Her fingers pressed against the skin like she was checking something.

Callan noticed immediately. "You okay?"

She nodded. But her hand stayed at her throat.

I was watching from the far end of the table. I'd been watching all night. It was the only thing left to do.

"Brinley?" Callan leaned closer. His voice changed. Got urgent.

She shook her head. Tried to smile. "I'm fine. Just—"

Her lips were swelling.

I saw it happen. Saw them go from normal to puffy in the space of seconds. Red blotches bloomed across her neck. Her breathing got shallow.

"Oh my God." Dorothy stood up fast. Her chair scraped.

Callan grabbed Brinley's face between his hands. "What did you eat? What did you eat?"

"I don't—" Her voice came out thick. Wrong.

"Does anyone have an EpiPen?" Callan's voice cut across the room. Sharp. Scared.

Gerald was already moving toward the kitchen. The cousins froze with forks halfway to their mouths.

Callan turned on me. His eyes found mine down the length of the table.

"What was in that dish?"

I blinked. "Which dish?"

"The one you brought. What was in it?"

"Brussels sprouts. Pomegranate. Balsamic glaze—"

"What else?"

I tried to think. My brain felt slow. "Olive oil. Salt. Pepper. Honey—"

"Honey?" His face went white. "What kind of honey?"

"Just honey. From the store. Why—"

"Was there peanut oil in anything? Peanuts? Tree nuts?"

I shook my head. Then stopped. "Wait. The honey. It might have had—"

I didn't get to finish.

"She's allergic to peanuts!" Callan's voice exploded across the dining room. "She's deathly allergic and you fed her peanuts!"

"I didn't know—"

"How could you not know?"

"Nobody told me—"

"You should have asked!" He was shouting now. Really shouting. I'd never heard him shout like this. Not in twenty-eight years. "You should have checked! You could have killed her!"

Brinley made a sound. A wheeze. Her face was bright red now. Hives everywhere.

Gerald came back empty-handed. "No EpiPen."

Callan scooped Brinley out of her chair. Just lifted her up like she weighed nothing. Her head fell against his shoulder.

"I'm taking her to the ER." He was already moving toward the door. "Call ahead. Tell them we're coming. Anaphylaxis."

Dorothy grabbed her phone.

I stood up. "Callan—"

He didn't look at me. Didn't slow down. Just kept walking with Brinley in his arms. Her breathing was getting worse. I could hear it from across the room.

The front door slammed.

Then silence.

I stood there. Everyone was staring at me.

"I didn't know," I said. My voice came out small. "Nobody told me she had allergies."

Dorothy set her phone down. She looked at me the way you'd look at something broken. Something that couldn't be fixed.

"You should have been more careful."

Five words. Delivered calm and flat.

Amanda-or-Allison started picking up plates. The sound of silverware scraping china filled the room. Gerald sat back down heavily. One of the cousins coughed.

I looked at my seat at the far end of the table. At the half-eaten pie on my plate. At the empty chair where Brinley had been sitting.

My chair.

I folded my napkin. Set it down beside my plate. Smooth and neat.

"I want a divorce."

The words came out quiet. Steady.

Dorothy's head snapped up. "What?"

"I want a divorce," I said again. Louder this time.

"Juliana." Dorothy's voice had an edge now. "You're upset. You're not thinking clearly."

"I'm thinking very clearly."

"It was an accident. Callan will calm down. He's just worried about the girl—"

"I know."

Dorothy stared at me. "Stop being dramatic."

I picked up my purse. Got my coat from the closet. My hands were steady. Everything was steady.

Dorothy followed me to the door. "Where are you going?"

"Home."

"You can't just leave. It's Christmas Eve. We need to talk about this—"

I opened the door. Cold air rushed in.

"Juliana!" Dorothy's voice went sharp. "You're overreacting!"

I stepped outside. The door closed behind me. Cut off whatever she said next.

The street was quiet. Christmas lights blinked on the neighbors' houses. Red and green and white. Someone had a plastic Santa on their lawn. It was tipped over.

I walked to my car. Got in. Started the engine.

I didn't go home.

I drove to the twenty-four-hour copy shop on Flatbush. The one that was always open. Always empty.

The fluorescent lights hurt my eyes. The place smelled like toner and burnt coffee. A kid behind the counter looked up from his phone. Looked back down.

I sat at one of the plastic tables. Pulled out my phone. Found the divorce forms I'd bookmarked three weeks ago. The ones I'd told myself I'd never actually use.

I started filling them out.

Name of petitioner. Name of respondent. Date of marriage. Grounds for divorce.

My handwriting stayed neat. No shaking. No smudges.

I signed my name at the bottom with the same pen I used for grocery lists.

Juliana Elliott.

I slid the papers into a manila envelope. Sealed it. Wrote Callan's name on the front.

The kid at the counter was watching me now. I caught his eye. He looked away fast.

I stood up. Put the envelope in my purse. Walked back out to my car.

It was still Christmas Eve. The radio was playing carols. I turned it off.

I sat in the parking lot for a long time. The engine running. Heat blowing.

I thought about twenty-eight years. About a little girl holding a little boy's hand on a Brooklyn sidewalk. About ramen dinners and thrift-store furniture and the apartment we'd saved for.

About the moment Callan had scooped Brinley into his arms and carried her out without looking back.

I put the car in drive.

I didn't cry.

There was nothing dramatic about the end of something that had died quietly a long time ago.
