Chapter 4

I took the subway to Manhattan on Christmas morning.

The train was nearly empty. Just me and a man in a Santa hat who smelled like yesterday's party. The lights overhead flickered. Outside the windows, Brooklyn blurred into darkness, then the tunnel, then the slow climb into daylight on the other side.

I had the envelope in my purse. The papers inside were crisp and clean. I'd printed them at three in the morning after leaving the copy shop. Couldn't sleep anyway.

The hospital was on the Upper East Side. White stone. Tall windows. The kind of place that looked expensive even from the outside.

I walked through the revolving door into warmth and antiseptic smell. A receptionist sat behind a curved desk. She was wearing reindeer antlers.

"Visiting someone?" she asked.

"Brinley Cook. She came in last night. Allergic reaction."

The woman typed. "Room 412. Elevators are to your left."

I rode up alone. Watched the numbers light up one by one. Second floor. Third. Fourth.

The doors opened.

The hallway was quiet. My shoes made no sound on the linoleum. Room 408. 410. 412.

I stopped outside the door. It was cracked open. I could see a slice of the room inside. White walls. A window with pale morning light.

I pushed the door open.

Callan was sitting in a chair pulled close to the bed. His hand was wrapped around Brinley's. Both of his hands, actually. Holding hers like something precious. His head was bent low. He was saying something too quiet for me to hear.

Brinley was awake. The swelling in her face had gone down. Her color was better. She looked tired but fine. She was looking at Callan the way people look at someone who just saved their life.

I stood in the doorway and watched them for three seconds.

Then I crossed the room.

Callan's head came up fast. His hands didn't let go.

"Jules—"

I pulled the envelope from my purse. Set it on the bed between them. Right on top of the thin hospital blanket.

"Merry Christmas," I said.

I turned and walked out.

Behind me, I heard the chair scrape. Heard Callan say my name. I kept walking. Past the nurses' station. Past the elevators. I took the stairs instead. Four flights down. My legs felt steady. Everything felt steady.

I pushed through the door into the lobby and headed for the exit.

"Juliana!"

Callan's voice echoed across the marble floor.

I didn't stop. Didn't turn around. I walked straight through the revolving door and out onto the sidewalk.

He caught up before I reached the corner. Grabbed my arm.

"What the hell is this?" He had the envelope in his other hand. Still sealed.

I pulled free. "Divorce papers."

"You can't be serious."

"I'm very serious."

"She almost died last night!" His voice was loud now. A few people on the sidewalk glanced over. "She couldn't breathe. Do you understand that? She couldn't breathe and it was because of—"

"I know."

"Then what is this?" He shook the envelope. "You're upset about the allergy? It was an accident!"

"I'm not upset about the allergy."

"Then what?"

I looked at him. Really looked. His hair was messy. He hadn't shaved. His shirt was wrinkled from sleeping in a hospital chair. His eyes were red.

"I'm tired," I said.

He blinked. "What?"

"I'm tired, Callan. I've been holding this marriage together with both hands for seven years. And I'm setting it down."

"You're not making sense."

"I'm making perfect sense. You just don't want to hear it."

"This is about Brinley. You've always been jealous—"

"It's not about jealousy." My voice stayed level. Calm. "It's about the fact that you mortgaged our home for her. You left me alone on winter nights to go to her. You carried her out of your parents' house in your arms without looking back. And last night you sat by her bed holding her hand like she was the most important person in your world."

"I was being a decent human being!"

"I know. That's the problem."

He stared at me.

"You've been decent to everyone except your wife," I said. "And I'm done."

"Jules, please—" His voice cracked. Actually cracked. "Don't do this. Not like this. Not on Christmas."

I heard the door behind us. Turned.

Brinley stood on the sidewalk in a hospital gown and borrowed coat. Her face was pale. She looked from Callan to me and back again.

"I'm sorry," she said quietly. "I just wanted to make sure you were—"

The car came around the corner too fast.

I saw it. The headlights. The way it veered toward the curb. Too close. Too fast.

Everything slowed down.

Callan moved.

His hand hit my shoulder. Shoved. Hard.

I stumbled sideways.

He threw himself the other direction. Over Brinley. His arms wrapped around her. Pulled her clear.

The car hit me.

Not hard. Just enough.

I felt the impact in my hip. Felt my feet leave the ground. Felt the pavement come up to meet me.

I heard Brinley scream.

I heard Callan's voice. Urgent. Scared.

"Are you okay? Are you hurt? Brinley, look at me—"

Then everything went soft and quiet.

And I thought: Of course.

Of course he pushed me away.

Of course he chose her.

I'd known for months.

I just finally had proof.
