Chapter 2

Violet’s arm was also burned by the coal that fell out of the grill when she tried to support me.

“Minerva, I know that you hate me, but you can’t throw coal on my arm.”

Everyone’s gaze landed on me.

They also started blatantly criticizing me.

“Minerva, how could you be so cruel? We know you’ve always found Violet an eyesore, but you can’t do this.”

I shut my eyes briefly before opening them to look at Violet.

She was not standing firmly on her feet but was leaning against Shaun. Her eyes were wet with tears, and she tugged at heartstrings.

Everyone fell for it, and their scathing words dialed up by a notch.

“You witch! Why didn’t you drown in the sea?!”

I said flatly, “Don’t accuse me of something I didn’t do, Violet—”

But before I could defend myself, Shaun interrupted me.

“Enough!” he snapped and frowned as he stared at the red mark on Violet’s arm.

“You’re the one who threw the coals at Violet’s arm. Why are you trying to twist the truth?”

I opened my mouth. “Heh. So you’re treating her word as truth now? Would you believe me if I said I never did it?”

I stared into Shaun’s eyes, but it only made him angry.

“If you made a mistake, apologize! Say sorry to Violet, now!”

The love Shaun had for me was gone. There was only a ferocious look left in them.

The pain from the burn shot through my body, but it chilled my heart.

After a long time passed, the people’s patience ran out. They glared at me.

I looked down to stare at my burn. Since I wanted to go back sooner to deal with the burn, I scoffed.

“Sure. I’m sorry.”

While supporting my horribly mangled leg, I shuffled over to Violet and Shaun so that I could stare him in the eye. “Happy now?”

No one dared say anything.

I headed to the car as tears fell from my eyes.

When Shaun saw the dejected look on my face, panic rose in him, and he followed me as well.

But I flung his hand off when he tried to grab me.

“I got into the sea and apologized. Can’t you leave me alone to treat the burn on my right leg?”

I did not want to sound sad in the slightest, but my endless grief still crept into my words.

I scowled at Shaun. Just how much more torture was he going to put me through for Violet?

Shaun trembled and opened his mouth to speak, but he stopped when he saw how downhearted I looked.

He gulped. “Minerva, I’m not trying to get you to do anything.”

I just glared at him warily.

He gulped again in frustration and came over to put his hand on my belly.

The chill from the night disappeared a bit due to the warmth from his palm.

His voice became gentler. “You know how Violet is. Giving way to her a bit is nothing.

“Why did you hurt your leg just because you’re angry? Have you forgotten about your baby?”

I closed my eyes, and my tears rolled down my cheeks as if to announce to the world about my grief.

I said dispiritedly, “Do you even still care about our baby?”

He was stunned. As if to get into my good books, he said, “Of—”

But before he finished speaking, one of the boys in the group ran over. “Shaun, bad news! Violet went to the sea!”

We looked over because of what he said.

Violet was indeed walking toward the sea while mumbling, “Minerva must be mad because we made her jump into the sea that day. If I go in too, she won’t be mad anymore.”

She teared up. “That way, Shaun won’t be put on the spot anymore.”

Shaun turned around completely and could not stop his worry and panic. “Has she lost her mind?! She doesn’t know how to swim!”

He went over to my car.

I grabbed his pant leg and shouted, “Have you lost your mind, Shaun?!

“That car is my dad’s wedding gift to me!

“If you drive it into the sea, it’ll be ruined!”

Shaun was exasperated. “You’re the one who has lost your mind! Violet is about to die, and you still care about your car?!”

I was furious. “Why should I sacrifice my car just because she’s throwing a tantrum?! Just because she’s your first love, I have to pay with my things?!”

Something I said must have made Shaun mad because all the gentleness in his eyes disappeared.

He shoved me away, got into the car, and drove off.

The wound on my calf started bleeding, and blisters had shown up in some parts.

My stomach started hurting as well, and everything before my eyes turned blurry.

I fainted.
