Chapter 3

The call came through a name I hadn't heard in years.

Sophie Chen. Prep school. We'd shared a dorm floor sophomore year. She worked in PR now. Manhattan charity circuit.

"Lillie," she'd said on the voicemail, her voice tight with that particular discomfort of someone delivering bad news to an old acquaintance. "I saw Holden at the Children's Hospital gala last night. He had a woman with him. Pregnant. They were... I'm sorry. I thought you should know. Also, someone mentioned you'd been in the hospital? I hope you're okay."

I deleted it. Stared at the wall.

That voicemail reached London before I knew it existed.

---

Vance Morrison walked into my hospital room thirty-six hours later.

I was sitting up in bed, wearing a hospital gown that tied in the back, staring at a tray of food I hadn't touched. My back was bandaged. The nurses changed the dressings twice a day. They never asked questions. Their faces stayed carefully blank.

I heard the door open. Looked up.

He stood in the doorway. Tall. Steady. Holding a paper cup with both hands like it was something fragile.

He didn't say my name. Didn't ask what happened. Didn't demand explanations or apologies or reasons.

He just walked to the chair beside my bed and sat down.

Set the cup on the table.

I looked at it. The tag hanging over the rim. Jasmine pearl. Loose leaf. The brand I'd liked since we were seventeen, the one I could never find in regular stores.

My throat closed.

"Vance," I whispered.

"I'm here," he said quietly.

I stared at the cup. At his hands. At the boarding pass still tucked into his jacket pocket.

"You didn't have to come."

"I know."

Silence. The machines beeped. Footsteps passed in the hallway.

"My mother's roses," I said. My voice cracked. "No one's been home. They need watering."

Vance pulled out his phone. Made a call. Spoke in that low, even tone he'd always had. Gave someone an address. Instructions. Hung up.

"Done," he said.

I looked at him. Really looked. The lines around his eyes. The way his shirt was wrinkled like he'd slept in it on a plane. The careful way he wasn't looking at my bandages.

"How long are you staying?" I asked.

He met my eyes.

"As long as you need me to."

Something inside me—something I thought had gone completely quiet—stirred. Just barely. Like a pulse.

I didn't say thank you. The words felt too small.

I just picked up the tea and held it between my palms. Let the warmth sink in.

---

Vance moved me out of the hospital three days later.

Not back to the house I'd shared with Holden. Not to my parents' estate. To a furnished apartment in a quiet building near the waterfront. Two bedrooms. Large windows. A view of the sound.

He didn't ask permission. Just arranged everything. Packed my things. Drove me there himself.

The apartment was clean and simple. Someone had stocked the kitchen. Left fresh flowers on the counter.

"There's security," Vance said. He stood near the door, hands in his pockets. "Building has cameras. Doorman downstairs. Your mother's hospital room has private security now too. No one gets in without clearance."

I set my bag down. Looked around.

"You didn't have to do all this."

"I know."

He turned to leave.

"Vance."

He stopped. Looked back.

"Stay," I said. "For dinner. Or just... stay."

He studied my face for a long moment. Then nodded.

We ordered takeout. Sat on the floor because the furniture felt too formal. Ate in silence. It wasn't uncomfortable. It was the first silence in weeks that didn't feel like it was crushing me.

Afterward, I went to the hospital. Vance drove. Waited in the car.

I sat beside my mother's bed. Took her hand.

"Someone came back," I whispered. "I didn't ask him to. He just... came."

Her face stayed still. Peaceful. The machines hummed.

I opened the novel. Found my place. Read until the night shift started.

---

Vance stayed in Seattle.

He rented an office downtown. Worked from there. I didn't ask what he was doing. He didn't offer.

But things started happening.

Quietly. Carefully.

Two weeks after he arrived, he knocked on my apartment door at nine in the morning. Handed me a folder.

"Preliminary findings," he said. "From the forensic team."

I opened it. Scanned the first page. Then the second.

My hands went cold.

Five years of systematic asset transfers. Shell companies in the Caymans. Offshore accounts. Redirected dividends. Forged approvals.

Holden had been bleeding the Spencer Group dry since the year we got married.

Hundreds of millions. Gone.

"How much?" I asked. My voice sounded far away.

"At least four hundred million. Possibly more. They're still tracing."

I sat down. Stared at the numbers.

Vance crouched in front of me. His voice was steady.

"We have enough to build a case. Criminal and civil. But we need to move carefully. He's positioned himself to take control the moment the divorce finalizes and your father's incapacitation removes board opposition. If we move too soon, he'll destroy evidence. If we wait too long, he'll lock you out completely."

I looked up. Met his eyes.

"What do I do?"

"You take it back," he said simply. "All of it."

I closed the folder. Set it on the table.

"Okay," I said.

Vance nodded. Stood.

"I've also secured alternative investment partnerships overseas. Contracts that bypass Holden's network entirely. When you're ready to move, you'll have financial backing independent of anything he controls."

"When did you do all this?"

"While you were reading to your mother."

I almost smiled. Almost.

"Thank you," I whispered.

He looked at me for a long moment. Then he walked to the door.

"Lillie."

I looked up.

"You're not alone," he said quietly. "Not anymore."

The door closed softly behind him.

I sat there in the morning light, holding the folder, feeling something I hadn't felt in five years.

Hope.
