Chapter 4

The forensic reports sat on my kitchen table like evidence at a crime scene.

I'd read them three times. Every page. Every number. Five years of systematic theft laid out in spreadsheets and wire transfer records. Holden had been bleeding my family's company since the month we got married.

Four hundred million dollars. Gone.

I closed the folder. Stood up. Walked to the window.

The sound was gray and calm. A ferry moved slowly across the water. I watched it until it disappeared behind the islands.

Then I grabbed my coat and left.

---

The bank was downtown. Old building. Marble floors. High ceilings that made every footstep echo.

I signed in at the desk. Showed my ID. A woman in a navy suit led me down a hallway to a small room with a table and two chairs. She brought me the box. Set it down carefully. Left me alone.

I opened it.

My college journal was on top. Blue leather. Worn at the edges. I'd kept it hidden here for eight years. Never looked at it. Never showed anyone.

I lifted it out. Beneath it were the documents. Mortgage papers. Loan agreements. Bank statements. A handwritten letter to the credit union on Spencer Group letterhead.

Proof that I'd saved Holden's life.

I set the journal aside. Reached deeper into the box.

My fingers found silk.

I pulled it out slowly. Unwrapped it.

The Founder's Seal.

Brass. Heavy. Engraved with my grandfather's initials and the company crest. The wooden handle was smooth from decades of use. My father had pressed it into my hands on my eighteenth birthday in his study. The same study where Holden now sat in his chair.

"This company is your birthright," my father had said. His voice was quiet. Certain. "No one can take it unless you let them."

I'd wrapped it in silk that night. Put it in my handbag. Carried it everywhere for years.

Never used it.

I held it now in my palm. The brass was cold. Solid. Real.

I wrapped it back up. Put everything except the documents back in the box. Signed out at the desk. Walked back to my car.

The seal sat in my purse. I could feel its weight.

---

Serena Chow agreed to meet me at a small restaurant in Fremont. Quiet. No one from our world would eat there.

She arrived exactly on time. Gray suit. Minimal jewelry. She'd been on the Spencer Group board for twelve years. My father trusted her.

I stood when she approached. We shook hands. Sat.

"Thank you for coming," I said.

She studied my face. "You look different."

"I am different."

The server brought water. We ordered tea. Waited until she left.

Serena leaned forward slightly. "I've been worried about the company. Holden's been making decisions that don't add up. Moving money around. Restructuring departments. But your father's incapacitated and you were—" She paused. "I heard you were unwell."

"I'm better now."

I pulled a folder from my bag. Slid it across the table.

She opened it. Read the first page. Her jaw tightened. She flipped to the second page. The third.

"How long has this been going on?" she asked quietly.

"Five years."

She closed the folder. Her knuckles were white.

"What do you need?"

"Three weeks from now, there's going to be a special meeting in Manhattan. The Spencer Group's thirtieth anniversary gala. I need you there. And I need three other board members who will follow your lead."

Serena didn't hesitate. "You'll have them."

"Holden can't know."

"He won't."

I reached into my bag again. Pulled out a single sheet of paper. My MBA diploma. Columbia. Graduated top of my class. I'd never told Holden. Never told anyone except my parents.

Serena looked at it. Then at me.

"He has no idea who you are," she said softly.

"No," I said. "He doesn't."

She folded the forensic report. Slipped it into her own bag.

"Three weeks," she said.

We finished our tea in silence.

---

Raina's apartment was in a new building downtown. Glass and steel. Expensive.

Julius showed up at her door just after nine. She let him in because she had to. He was her brother. Sort of.

He looked worse than the last time she'd seen him. Thinner. Eyes too bright. Hands shaking slightly.

"We need to talk," he said.

Raina closed the door. Crossed her arms. "About what?"

"Money."

"You've been paid."

"Not enough." He walked to her window. Looked out at the city. "I did the hard part. The ritual. The performance. I sold it. Holden believed every word."

"And you were compensated."

Julius turned. His smile was thin. Wrong.

"I want more. Fifty percent of whatever you get when the Spencer Group transfers."

Raina laughed. Actually laughed.

"You're insane."

"I'm serious."

"You're a con artist with a drug problem," she said coldly. "You'll take what I give you and be grateful. Your part is finished. Go back to your fake healing sessions and leave me alone."

Julius stared at her. His face went very still. Empty.

"Okay," he said quietly.

He walked to the door. Opened it. Paused.

"You should've been nicer," he said. His voice was flat. Dead.

Then he left.

Raina locked the door behind him. Went back to her laptop. She had wedding venues to research.

She didn't think about Julius again.

She should have.
