Chapter 2

I found Raina in the corridor outside the ICU.

She was standing near the vending machines, scrolling through her phone. The overhead lights made her skin look perfect. Porcelain smooth. She wore a cream cashmere sweater that draped just right over the curve of her belly.

I walked up to her. Stopped three feet away.

She looked up. Smiled.

"Lillie," she said softly. "How are you holding up?"

I didn't answer right away. I just looked at her. At the phone in her hand. At the small bandage on her wrist where she'd probably nicked herself removing the IV cap.

"I know what you did to my mother's IV," I said.

Her smile didn't falter. Not even a flicker.

"I don't know what you mean," she said. Her voice was gentle. Concerned. "You've been through so much. Maybe you should rest."

"I know," I said again.

She tilted her head. Studied me like I was something mildly interesting under glass.

"Even if that were true," she said slowly, "what could you possibly do about it? You just lost your uterus. You signed divorce papers in a hospital bed. You're alone, Lillie. No husband. No baby. No future."

She stepped closer. Her perfume was light and expensive. Something floral.

"Let go gracefully," she whispered. "It'll hurt less."

I held her gaze. Five seconds. Ten.

Then I turned and walked away.

Behind me, I heard her laugh. Soft and satisfied.

She thought she'd won.

---

The next day, a man arrived at the hospital.

He wore flowing white linen robes and carried a leather bag. His hair was long and tied back. He moved slowly, like every step was deliberate. Spiritual.

Raina introduced him to Holden in the family waiting room. I was sitting in the corner, half-hidden behind a magazine I wasn't reading.

"This is Julius Torres," Raina said. Her hand rested on her belly. Protective. "He's been guiding me through the pregnancy. He's a holistic wellness consultant. Very sought after."

Julius smiled. It was a calm, knowing smile. The kind that made you feel like he could see straight through you.

"Mr. Sullivan," he said. His voice was low and smooth. "I'm glad we could finally meet."

Holden shook his hand. "Raina's told me a lot about you."

"I've been concerned," Julius said. He glanced at Raina, then back at Holden. "There's been a disturbance in the energy surrounding the pregnancy. Something toxic. I've been trying to identify the source."

Holden frowned. "What kind of disturbance?"

Julius set his bag down. Unzipped it slowly. Pulled out a small bundle of dried herbs and a smooth black stone.

"May I?" he asked.

Holden nodded.

Julius closed his eyes. Held the stone in one hand, the herbs in the other. He stood there for a long moment, breathing deeply. Then he opened his eyes and looked directly at me.

"There," he said quietly. "The contamination is coming from her."

I didn't move.

Holden turned. Stared at me.

"Lillie?" he said.

Julius nodded gravely. "Her energy is deeply fractured. Toxic. It's endangering the child. I've seen this before. If it's not addressed, the baby won't survive."

Raina's hand tightened on her belly. Her eyes were wide. Frightened.

"What do we do?" Holden asked.

Julius packed his props carefully. "There's a cleansing ritual. Ancient. Forty-nine strikes with birch branches soaked in purifying alcohol. It will break the attachment and restore balance."

Holden didn't hesitate. "When?"

"Tonight."

---

They brought me to a locked room on the second floor.

It was small. Empty except for a chair and a metal table. The walls were cinder block. Painted white.

Raina sat in the chair. Julius stood near the door, his bag open on the table. He pulled out a bundle of thin birch branches and a bottle of rubbing alcohol. He soaked the branches slowly, methodically. The smell filled the room. Sharp and chemical.

Holden stood in the corner, arms crossed. Watching.

"Remove your shirt," Julius said.

I looked at Holden. He didn't look away. Didn't flinch.

I pulled my sweater over my head. Turned my back to them.

The first strike split the skin between my shoulder blades.

I didn't scream.

The second one landed lower. The alcohol burned into the raw flesh. My knees buckled but I stayed standing.

Three. Four. Five.

I bit down on my tongue until I tasted blood.

Ten. Fifteen. Twenty.

I stopped counting.

The room was silent except for the wet sound of birch on skin and my own ragged breathing.

Raina watched. Her face was calm. Interested. Like she was watching a play.

Thirty. Forty.

My legs gave out. I hit the floor. The cold concrete pressed against my cheek.

Julius finished the last nine strikes while I lay there.

When it was over, he packed his branches. Wiped his hands on a cloth.

Raina stood up. Smoothed her dress. Walked to the door.

She paused. Looked back at me.

"I hope you feel spiritually lighter," she said sweetly.

The door clicked shut.

I lay on the floor in the dark.

Something inside me—something that had been holding on for five years, something that still believed love could be enough—finally let go.

It didn't hurt.

It felt like relief.
