Chapter 5

The ultrasound monitor was angled away from me.

I knew before the doctor spoke.

The room was too quiet.

"I'm sorry, Eva," he said.

He had stopped calling me Mrs. Cross after I told the nurse not to contact my husband again.

"There is no fetal cardiac activity. With the bleeding and the trauma you described, the pregnancy is no longer viable."

I stared at the ceiling.

The fluorescent panel above me had a faint dark mark in one corner. I focused on it because looking at something ordinary was easier than understanding the sentence I had just heard.

No heartbeat.

Eight weeks.

Gone.

The doctor continued explaining options, blood loss, follow-up care, warning signs. I answered when he needed me to answer. I signed where the nurse told me to sign.

My body seemed to belong to somebody else.

A young nurse stood near the counter with a phone in her hand.

"Your emergency contact is still going to voicemail," she said gently. "Do you have anyone else who can pick you up after the procedure?"

"Stop calling him."

"Eva, you should not be alone tonight."

"He is not coming."

The words were not bitter.

They were simply true.

I reached for my phone.

I should not have opened social media.

I did anyway.

Chloe had posted twenty minutes earlier from the maternal-fetal floor three stories above me.

In the photograph, she lay in a hospital bed beneath a cream blanket. Julian sat beside her. His wedding ring was visible as his hand rested protectively over her stomach.

A scary fall, but our baby is safe. Grateful for the man who never left my side.

I stared at the image.

That was the moment something in me stopped asking why.

For years, I had wondered what Julian would do if he ever had to choose between me and something he considered more important.

His career. His family. His Alpha inheritance. A child.

Now I knew.

He would not hesitate.

The procedure was over before dawn.

I dressed slowly in the small hospital bathroom. My clothes from the night before were sealed in a plastic bag, so the nurse found me a pair of gray discharge pants and a sweatshirt from the hospital charity closet.

I placed my belongings into my purse one at a time.

My phone.

The ultrasound image I had planned to give Julian.

The white envelope from the clinic.

My red hospital bracelet.

I zipped the bag shut.

By the time I reached the lobby, Julian finally texted.

Stay at a hotel for a few days. Chloe is shaken up after what happened. We can talk when she is stable.

No question about where I had gone.

No question about the blood.

No question about the ultrasound I had held in my hand.

I did not reply.

Instead, I searched for the highest-rated family-law firm in the city and called the emergency intake number.

By eight-thirty, I was sitting in a private conference room across from Sarah Whitmore, a divorce attorney with silver-streaked hair and the kind of expression that made excuses die before they reached her desk.

I told her the facts in order.

The pregnancy claim.

The money transfer.

The threat to remove me from the house.

The staircase.

The blood.

The hospital.

Sarah did not interrupt until I finished.

"Do you want to preserve the marriage?" she asked.

"No."

It was the easiest answer I had given all night.

She nodded. "Then we move quickly. We request temporary financial restraints on the marital accounts, preserve the house security system, and document your medical treatment. Do not delete a message. Do not confront Chloe. Do not move money without telling me."

"I only want what is legally mine."

"Good. That makes my job easier."

I signed the engagement agreement.

The divorce petition went out for electronic service that morning.

I returned to the house before noon with Sarah's instructions in my head.

The foyer smelled faintly of disinfectant, but a dark stain remained in the grain of the hardwood where I had fallen.

Upstairs, two delivery boxes sat outside Chloe's room: pregnancy pillows and premium prenatal supplements.

I walked past them.

In the kitchen, her ultrasound still covered one corner of my wedding picture.

I left it there.

I was finished fighting over symbols.

I pulled my largest suitcase from the closet and packed only what was mine: clothes, textbooks, personal documents, the blue rehab binder, a few photographs of my parents, and the old laptop I had used in school.

I left the jewelry Julian had bought me.

I left the team merchandise.

I left the designer bags I had never cared about.

At the nightstand, I removed my wedding ring.

For a moment, I remembered the day he put it on my finger. He had been nervous. His hands had shaken. He had promised that no matter how big his career became, home would always be the place where we chose each other.

I set the ring beside our framed marriage certificate.

The front door opened downstairs as I zipped my suitcase.

"Eva?"

Julian's footsteps came fast.

He found me in the living room with my luggage.

His expression hardened.

"Are you serious?"

"Yes."

"You're actually leaving over one night?"

"I'm leaving over a marriage."

"Chloe thought you pushed her. I had to protect the baby."

"You did not have to push me."

He flinched.

"I was angry. I should not have done that."

It was the first acknowledgment I had heard.

Too late.

"You told me to stay away from your child," I said. "Then you shoved me while I was trying to reach a paramedic."

"I didn't know you were hurt that badly."

I almost smiled.

"I told you I was bleeding."

His face tightened. "I thought you were trying to pull attention away from Chloe."

"Exactly."

I reached into my purse and placed the service packet on the coffee table.

"My attorney filed this morning. All communication about the house, the accounts, and the divorce goes through her."

He stared at the papers.

Then he laughed once, sharply, as if the idea were ridiculous.

"Divorce? Eva, come on. You're exhausted and angry. We had a terrible night. That does not erase three years."

"No. You erased them one decision at a time."

He opened the packet.

His eyes moved over the petition, then the motion requesting temporary financial restraints.

A medical declaration was attached as support for the emergency request.

His gaze stopped.

Pregnancy loss.

The color left his face.

He read the line again.

"What is this?"

I said nothing.

"Eva."

His voice had changed.

He looked up at me.

"When were you pregnant?"

I pulled the ultrasound image from my purse.

The same image I had held on the staircase.

I placed it beside the divorce papers.

"Eight weeks."

Julian stared at it.

"No."

"I tried to tell you after the game. Chloe had her cramp. I tried again in our bedroom. Then I tried on the staircase."

His breathing became uneven.

"You said you were pregnant?"

"I held this in front of you."

"I thought-"

"I know what you thought."

I took the red hospital bracelet from my purse and set it beside the ultrasound.

"And after you pushed me, I told you I was bleeding."

Julian's knees seemed to give. He caught the back of the sofa with one hand.

"Eva, no."

His voice broke.

"Please tell me the doctor is wrong."

I gripped the suitcase handle.

"Do not ask me to comfort you about the child I lost alone."

He covered his mouth.

Tears filled his eyes.

I walked toward the door.

"Eva, wait."

I kept going.

"Please."

My hand closed around the doorknob.

Behind me, his voice cracked into something raw and unfamiliar.

"What do you mean our baby is gone?"

I stepped outside and closed the door.

This time, I did not turn back when he called my name.
