Chapter 2

The next morning, my phone buzzed beside my coffee.

Julian Cross added an event to Family Shared Calendar: Chloe - High-Risk OB Appointment, 10:00 AM.

I stared at the notification.

He had not asked. He had assigned it.

Julian walked into the kitchen already dressed for closed practice, car keys in one hand and a protein shake in the other.

"Leave by nine-thirty," he said. "Traffic to St. Matthew's is bad after that."

I set my mug down. "I'm not taking Chloe to her appointment."

He stopped at the door. "Why not?"

"Because she is not my patient, my sister, or my friend. She is the woman you moved into our house after telling me she may be carrying your child."

"She has a high-risk appointment."

"Then you should take her."

"I have practice."

"And apparently my time has no value at all."

His mouth flattened.

Before he could answer, Chloe appeared in the hallway wearing a cream sweater and soft leggings. She looked as if she had dressed for a photograph titled Vulnerable Pregnant Woman.

"It's fine," she said. "I can take a rideshare. I don't want Eva to feel obligated."

Julian looked at me as if she had just proved something.

"See? She has been here less than a day and is already trying to keep the peace."

"She does not get points for solving a problem you created."

His jaw tightened.

"Stop making everything harder than it needs to be, Eva."

He left before I could answer.

I did not drive Chloe.

At nine-forty, I heard the front door close. At ten, the house was finally quiet.

I opened my laptop at the dining table and returned to the university portal. My application was almost complete. I needed to upload identification, update my emergency contact, and submit a short statement explaining the three-year gap in my studies.

For once, the gap looked less like failure and more like experience.

I had spent those years doing practical work no classroom could have taught me.

I pulled my driver's license from my wallet.

The room tilted.

A violent wave of nausea sent me running for the downstairs bathroom.

I barely reached the toilet.

When it passed, I sat on the tile with my back against the cabinet, breathing through my mouth.

Stress, I told myself.

I had barely slept. I had eaten almost nothing since Chloe arrived.

Then another thought surfaced.

My period was late.

I opened the calendar on my phone and counted backward.

My stomach dropped.

Forty minutes later, I stood in the same bathroom holding a pharmacy test.

Two pink lines appeared before the timer finished.

I sat down on the closed toilet lid.

Julian and I had talked about trying for a baby after the season. We had opened a future-family savings account. We had debated names during a flight delay in Denver. He had once fallen asleep with his hand over my stomach after telling me he wanted a little girl with my eyes.

I should have felt joy.

Instead, I pictured the ultrasound photo pinned beside our wedding picture.

I did not trust my own husband enough to tell him I was pregnant while another woman slept upstairs.

That realization hurt almost as much as the betrayal itself.

I called my clinic and booked the earliest confirmation appointment they had for the following morning. Until a doctor confirmed the pregnancy and gestational age, I would keep the test to myself.

I tucked it into the back pocket of my blue binder with the appointment slip.

Julian came home after four.

He did not look tired. He looked excited.

A rapid thumping sound played from his phone before he even took off his jacket.

"Listen," he said, setting the phone on the island.

Thump-thump-thump-thump.

"Chloe recorded it at the clinic. Strong heartbeat."

The sound filled my kitchen.

My palm flattened against the edge of the counter.

"My parents already called," Julian continued. "They want her transferred to Dr. Bennett's maternal-fetal team. The Cross Pack will cover everything."

"Julian, I need to talk to you."

He opened the refrigerator. "About what?"

"Us. The house. The way you made this decision without me."

"We already talked about it."

"No. You issued instructions. That is not the same thing."

He twisted open a bottle of water. "Not tonight, Eva. Chloe's appointment took longer than expected. I'm already late reviewing film."

I took a breath. "Then give me five minutes."

He glanced at his phone.

"Fine."

I reached for the binder on the island.

Before I could open it, he said, "Actually, I handled one thing this morning that you should know about. I moved the money from the future-family account."

My hand stopped.

"You did what?"

"I transferred it into a medical trust for the baby."

For a moment, the kitchen seemed to narrow around me.

"All of it?"

"For now."

Two months earlier, we had sat at this same island, drinking coffee and calculating what we could save before trying for a child of our own.

"That account was ours," I said.

"The money is still going toward a child."

"Not our child."

The words left my mouth before I could stop them.

He frowned. "Do not make this about biology."

I almost told him then.

I almost said, There is another child. Ours.

But the contempt in his face stopped me.

"I want my share restored," I said instead. "Today."

He gave a short, disbelieving laugh. "You are seriously fighting me over money while there is an unborn child involved?"

"I am fighting you over taking joint money without my consent."

"I am the primary holder on that account."

"That does not make it morally yours."

His expression changed. Julian was used to me handling difficult things quietly. Sponsors. Injuries. Travel. Bad press. He was not used to me refusing.

"You are acting irrationally," he said.

"No. I am finally paying attention."

He set the water bottle down hard enough to splash the counter.

"Do not let jealousy turn you cruel, Eva."

He left the room.

I stood there listening to his footsteps climb the stairs.

A year earlier, photographs of Julian leaving a club with two models had nearly cost him a sponsor. I had spent three nights tracing security footage and hotel access records until I proved he had left with his publicist, not either woman. At the press conference, he thanked his agent, his coach, and the team's PR director.

Not me.

I had told myself it was fine because marriage was not a scoreboard.

Now I understood the danger of making invisible labor look effortless.

People started believing it cost you nothing.

That night, I went upstairs early.

My bedroom door was open.

The blue binder sat on the edge of the bed.

I had left it downstairs.

My heart kicked hard.

The binder was open.

My pregnancy test lay on top of Julian's old rehab logs, the two pink lines facing the ceiling.

"I was looking for his knee brace."

I turned.

Chloe stood in the doorway wearing one of Julian's old team shirts. It hung to mid-thigh.

I looked at the shirt, then at her face.

"Why are you in my bedroom?"

"Julian said some of his rehab equipment might be in here."

"So you searched my binder?"

Her gaze dropped to the test.

"I didn't mean to find that."

I crossed the room, snatched the test from the bed, and shoved it into the nightstand.

"Do not come into this room again. Do not touch my things."

Her eyes widened, the soft victim expression returning on command.

"I'm sorry."

She stepped into the hall.

Then she stopped and glanced back.

The apology disappeared from her face.

"You should tell Julian soon," she said quietly. "Before he has to decide which baby comes first."

She walked away before I could answer.

I stood beside the bed with one hand over the drawer.

For the first time, I knew Chloe had not come into my house merely because she was scared and pregnant.

She had come prepared to compete.
