My Husband Let His Mistress Ruin My Career Chapter 1

The valve was a disaster.

I could see it the moment Dr. Patel clamped the aorta and we got our first clear view of Eleanor Walker's mitral valve. Calcified. Stenotic. The leaflets barely moved. It was the kind of damage that built up over years while the patient ignored every symptom and refused every follow-up.

Typical.

"Scalpel," I said.

The surgical resident across from me—Thompson, young, eager, sweating through his mask—handed it over. His hands shook a little. First time assisting on a valve repair. I didn't look at him. I looked at the heart.

Eleanor Walker's heart.

My mother-in-law's heart.

I made the first incision into the valve tissue. Clean. Precise. The room was silent except for the rhythm of the bypass machine and the soft beep of the monitors. This was the part I loved. The part where nothing existed except the problem in front of me and the solution in my hands.

"Suction," I said.

The scrub nurse moved instantly. I worked quickly, excising the calcified tissue, preparing the annulus for the repair. My fingers moved without thought. Muscle memory. Ten thousand hours of training distilled into motion.

"Looking good, Dr. Montgomery," Patel said from across the table.

I didn't answer. I was already placing the first suture.

Then the music started.

It took me a second to register it. A soft chime. Then Beckett's voice, low and warm, filling Operating Room 3 through the ceiling speakers.

"Hey, it's me. I know you're probably asleep, but I just… I needed to hear your voice. Even if it's just your voicemail."

I froze.

The suture needle hovered above Eleanor's open chest.

"I can't stop thinking about you," Beckett continued. His voice had that texture it only got late at night. Intimate. Private. "About us. I meant what I said yesterday. I'll leave everything behind for you if that's what it takes. My mother, the company, all of it. You're the only thing that matters."

Someone gasped behind me. I didn't turn around.

"Dr. Montgomery?" Thompson's voice cracked.

I pressed the needle through tissue. Drew the suture tight. Moved to the next placement.

"I love you," Beckett said through the speakers. "I'll see you tonight. Wear the blue dress. The one I bought you."

The voicemail ended. The OR was completely silent except for the machines.

I placed another suture. Then another.

"Someone turn that off," Patel said quietly.

The music stopped. I didn't look up. My hands were steady. They had to be steady. Eleanor Walker's life was open on the table in front of me, her heart exposed and vulnerable, held together by my skill and nothing else.

I could feel everyone watching me. Waiting.

"Suture," I said.

The scrub nurse handed it over.

I worked for another ninety minutes. Repaired the valve. Checked every placement twice. Closed the atrium. Patel removed the clamps and we watched Eleanor's heart begin to beat on its own again. Strong. Regular. Perfect.

"Beautiful work," Patel said.

I stripped off my gloves and walked out.

The scrub room was empty. I stood at the sink and turned on the water. Hot. Almost too hot. I pressed my right thumb against the inside of my left wrist and counted my pulse. Sixty-eight beats per minute. Elevated but controlled.

I looked at my hands under the running water. These hands had just saved Eleanor Walker's life. The same Eleanor who would sit across from me at Sunday dinners and ask when Beckett and I were going to give her grandchildren. The same Eleanor who had never once asked me how I was doing.

I dried my hands. Walked to my locker. Opened it.

The envelope was exactly where I'd left it, tucked behind my spare scrubs. I'd put it there three weeks ago. Signed but not filed. Waiting.

I pulled it out. Unfolded the papers. Read the first line.

*Petition for Dissolution of Marriage.*

I took a pen from my locker shelf. Signed my name on the final page. Today's date. Right there at the bottom.

Then I pulled out my phone. Photographed every page. Sent the images to Valerie Garza with a single message: *Begin.*

Her reply came back in thirty seconds. *Received. Are you sure?*

I typed: *Yes.*

Then I put the papers back in the envelope, put the envelope back in my locker, and closed the door.

My hands were still steady.

That night, I sat across from Beckett at our dining table. The penthouse was quiet. He'd ordered Italian from the place on Fifth Avenue. Pasta I didn't eat. Wine I didn't drink.

He checked his phone under the table. The screen lit up his face in the dim light. He smiled at something. Typed quickly.

I watched him the way I watched a patient's vitals on a monitor. Detached. Clinical. Noting the symptoms.

Distraction. Evasion. Chronic absence even when physically present.

Terminal.

"How was your day?" I asked.

He looked up. Blinked like he'd forgotten I was there. "Fine. Busy. You?"

"I saved your mother's life."

He nodded. Looked back at his phone. "That's great, babe. She's lucky to have you."

I picked up my water glass. Took a sip. Set it down.

Across the table, Beckett's phone buzzed again. He stood up, already moving toward his office. "I need to take this. Work thing."

I watched him walk away. Listened to his office door close.

Then I looked around the penthouse. At the furniture we'd chosen together. The art on the walls. The coffee table books. The framed photo from our wedding day on the mantel.

I started making a mental list of which things were mine.

It was a short list.
