My Husband Let His Mistress Destroy My Daughter

At 4:15, Arabella returns home shaking, her uniform jumper marked with dark stains, her grip on Clover white-knuckled. She doesn't run into my arms. She stands in the hallway and begs, "Mama, please don't make me go back." I kneel and take her arms before my mind can catch up to the truth: my husband let his mistress destroy our daughter, and every mark on her skin exposes what he allowed. To save Arabella, I must confront the horror living inside my own home.

Chapter 2

The Whitmore Prep Early Years courtyard looked like a magazine spread. Stone pavers, wrought-iron benches, climbing roses on the perimeter wall that probably cost more to maintain than most people's mortgages. I'd seen it a hundred times at pickup, parents clustered in tight circles while their kids ran around in matching uniforms. Today it looked the same, except everyone was staring at me.

I parked the Phantom in the visitor lot and walked through the front gate. My heels clicked on the stone. I kept my chin level, my hands loose at my sides. The jade bracelet felt cool against my wrist.

Thalia Diaz stood in the center of the courtyard like she owned it. Navy wrap dress, probably Diane von Furstenberg. Hair blown out in perfect waves. She was laughing at something Judith Campbell had said, one hand on her hip, the other holding a to-go cup from the coffee place down the street. Around her, maybe a dozen parents formed a loose half-circle — Angie Lewis in athleisure with a Cartier watch, Ainsley Bennett in head-to-toe Lululemon, a few others I recognized from group chat profile pictures but had never spoken to.

When I stepped into the courtyard, the laughter stopped.

Thalia's eyes found me first. She didn't look surprised. She looked entertained.

"Can I help you?" Judith's voice came from my left, bright and sharp at the same time. She stepped forward, hands clasped in front of her like she was greeting a parent at conference night. Except her smile didn't reach her eyes.

I stopped three feet from the group. "I'm here to speak with administration about my daughter's injuries."

"Oh." Judith tilted her head, still smiling. "I'm afraid that won't be possible."

Someone behind her snickered.

"Why not?" I kept my voice level.

Judith glanced at Thalia, then back at me. "Because Arabella is no longer enrolled at Whitmore Prep. Effective immediately. We've determined she's not a good fit for our community."

The words landed clean and cold, like she'd rehearsed them.

"You're expelling her," I said.

"We prefer 'behavioral incompatibility,'" Judith said. "But yes."

Angie Lewis clapped once, then twice. A few others joined in. Ainsley Bennett raised her phone, angling it toward me, her thumb already tapping the screen.

I looked at Thalia. She was watching me over the rim of her coffee cup, eyes bright.

"Your son put puncture wounds all over my daughter's arms and legs," I said. "I have photographs. I posted them in the group chat. Are there going to be consequences for him?"

Thalia lowered the cup slowly. She took a step toward me, then another, until she was close enough that I could smell her perfume — something expensive and floral that probably came in a crystal bottle. She smiled, and it was the kind of smile that didn't move past her mouth.

"Cody's five," she said. "Kids play rough. Maybe if you weren't so busy chasing after my husband, you'd have taught your kid how to handle herself."

Someone laughed. I didn't turn to see who.

"She's five too," I said.

Thalia's smile widened. "And she's a bastard. So honestly? She should be grateful Cody didn't do worse."

The courtyard went quiet. Even the kids playing on the far side of the yard seemed to pause.

I opened my mouth to respond.

Thalia slapped me.

Hard. Across the left side of my face. The crack echoed off the stone walls.

My head snapped to the side. My cheek went hot, then numb. I tasted copper on my tongue where I'd bitten the inside of my lip.

I turned back slowly. Thalia was still standing there, hand raised like she might do it again, her expression somewhere between triumph and boredom.

Behind her, Ainsley's phone was still up, camera lens pointed straight at me. Angie had both hands over her mouth, eyes wide with delight. Judith stood frozen, lips parted, like she wasn't sure whether to intervene or applaud.

I touched my cheek. My fingers came away clean. No blood on the outside, at least.

Thalia lowered her hand and took a sip of coffee, casual, like she'd just swatted a fly.

"You done?" she asked.

I looked at her for a long moment. At Judith. At Angie and Ainsley and the rest of them, standing there with their phones and their smiles and their certainty that this was entertainment.

Then I turned and walked back toward the parking lot.

Behind me, someone said, "Finally."

Someone else laughed.

I kept walking.
